Lax Announcement

Big shame about the injury.

Also heard that how they played yesterday was a big wake up call.

RU has a prospect day today. Lot of good players up there.

Not as well as they know they can. Could not get into a flow.
Thanks. I had also heard that they did not look especially good. Need to not read their press clippings. Sure Brecht is aware of that & will convey that to them.

The injury, the fact that they were playing against a pack it in zone, and that a lot of the starters were pulled early just led to no rhythm being created for a lot of the guys. We are a time that is going to thrive on flying around, pushing the tempo, and getting hot and the scrimmage was the recipe to slow us down.

Article says that they both graduated from HS early. They skipped their senior year of lacrosse. It's not like they didn't graduate. Oftentimes excellent scholars graduate in three. Don't see much of a problem here.
Mixed feelings on this. If this is the new normal, then so be it and kuddos to the staff for acting. I hate to see kids miss their senior year.

I know football does it but its not an apples to apples comparison. The Coyne kid's highlights are ridiculous.

Thanks gef21.

I think it will be a case by case basis. If a kid is at a great program, still learning, wants to chase something with his friends, I am all for it.

If a kid has maxed out his growth at a certain school, is ready to and willing to get after it and graduates, who am I to say no.

Worst case is they go through a full season of watching and practicing and developing. Imagine these kids as r-freshman next year.

By all accounts, these kids are fitting in. And fitting in physically, which is pretty amazing. I am sure Coach Brecht is going to choose his spots.

Again though, seeing Rutgers at the forefront of something is very refreshing.

Coach Brecht just gets this stuff. He really does.

Is it common for Lax players to take a Red Shirt year? If not, it makes sense that they would want to get a head start by being apart of the team and training program asap. Think about the type of players they would be if they stayed in high school and then think about them as RS Freshman like Cali said.

Fair point. Moreover, if they are that dominant (everyone is dominant in their highlight reels!), you could argue they might develop bad habits by staying their senior year and playing against inferior competition.

My hesitation is more based on maturity than anything but every kid is different. One can point to early enrollment in football as a rebuttal. Lax is not football though. The need to get in to a D1 strength and conditioning program just isn't the same.

I am not sure of their emotional development, but I think if a kid is focused and disciplined enough to graduate in 3.5 years, he is probably fairly advanced.

On the athletic side, buy all accounts, these kids are fitting in skill wise and from a physical perspective.

I would like to know how old these kids are. Lacrosse is starting to look a little like hockey, without the pro element. Hockey recruits keep signing early, like lax guys. But hockey has a very unique structure b/c juniors. Many hockey freshman are 20+ years old. Lax is often a prep sport, so if kids are a little older that makes sense. My guess is this is a little more desperation than foreward thinking.

With a Football EE he would get 5 &1/2 years to play 4 years, but with Lacrosse he will only get 4 & 1/2 years to play 4 years.

That's true, but from the time of enrollment, it's still 5 seasons to play 4 in both sports' cases. The one year difference (5.5 for fall sport vs. 4.5 for spring sport) can be looked at as just a 0.5 year (spring semester) out-of-season for the fall sport EE on the front end (time for S&C and acclimation to academics without season underway), regardless of redshirting or not, along with the fall sport player having another 0.5 year (out of season spring semester) of school at the tail end since the sport would already be done with.

Enrolling early for a spring sport can be viewed as no different than starting school academically the same semester as your sport's season being underway, which obviously happens for majority of fall sport student athletes every fall.

The spring sport player may have used up all eligibility and can't play in the spring of the 5th year (9th semester of school if continuously enrolled), unless the player redshirted in the spring of the 1st year (as an EE) or medically redshirted one of the years.

My guess is they're 18, maybe 19 (or will turn 19 later in 2018 or by early to mid-2019).
My guess is they may be older. Using PGs and Gap years to help make recruiting years work. If they're regular high school seniors, this would be a negative for RU.

When I first heard about this I was more concerned about their physical development than their age.

After they've arrived, those concerns are no more. They pass the eye test and the skills test.

If push came to shove, I am hearing they'd already play over number of older guys.

Feel horrible for AC. That kid worked his ass off to come back, and was playing better than he ever has. Just an incredible amount of natural talent, that worked really hard.

Sports, like life, is often not fair.

I feel terrible for him. Hopefully it just makes him stronger and he comes back even tougher next year.
