Wrestling LIVE - Rutgers vs Rider Updates

The flare up was almost as good as the match lol......glad they stayed focused after that mess .....what a comeback from Friday night and all the kids wrestled their butts off ..the Rider coach was annoying as hell with the stall signal all night ...maybe it was the small gym but I’ve never seen the coaches so pumped up and engaging as they were tonite ..a great effort by all involved

Glad we don't need to deal with the Jojo vs. Lipari discussion again.
With seconds to go it looked dismal but coaches were screaming he had to get the two for reversal once riding time went in PL favor and JOJO wanted it bad and got it ...kudos to JOJO for handling the immense pressure very well ..great match by both athletes ...

Great team effort by all 10 wrestlers! As some have mentioned RU "big brothered" them. There is a reason for that term, even when the little brother is favored, the big brother digs deep to keep him down!! Lol
As far as the "flair up"....there were actually two. A few minutes after the 141 match a few Rider parents and some RU fans were in a very heated discussion, some of the RU wrestlers were also doing some talking with said Rider parents. No pushing or shoving as officers tried to calm things down.
2nd-was during the handshake line after the match.....not sure if it was a carryover from earlier or if someone said or did something but again a lot of yelling and Rider coaches had to keep back one of their wrestlers and escort him to the locker room so nothing else could happen.
Great atmosphere, probably a 60-40 split in fans(Rider favor), but the RU fans got the last laugh and had an enjoyable stroll out of the gym.

Sounds like Rutgers got inside of the Rider wrestlers heads which would explain lackluster performances from Dellavecchia, Laird, and Cloud.

Aguilars comeback got the snowball rolling but JoJo’s reversal got things going in an unstoppable fashion

One thing is Donner wrestles very hard. In some matches he’s just doesn’t have the talent to win but he gives his all every match from what I have seen so he never seems to lose for lack of effort
donner was tough in h.s....i lived in manahawkin at the time, and followed southern...my nephew wrestled for the rams...remember donner as tough kid...wasn't a state champ, but a placer for three years......i think he has really has got his priorities in order now....hope can get a shot at being a qualifier.

He definitely is in a good position as he was ranked #33 in the last coaches poll and has to face #18 Oster (NW) and #23 Cuomo (Princeton) over the next two weeks, plus the B1Gs. The opportunity is right in front of him to take.

The flare up started as Mr Lipari left the gym after I think the Janzer match. He was pointing and saying something to RU bench and maybe RU fans. Mr Janzer came out of the stands to confront him and Billy was heading to help his dad when he was stopped by our coaches. Security diffused it. After the match Peter came over and was trying to get to our coaches when the Rider coach pulled him away

Wow! The Liparis are really sour grapes.

Actually it was right after the Aragona match ....the coaches were basically being called every name in the book til Mr Janzer stepped in to confront him ...along with a few RU guys ..it escalated because cops were gonna throw them both out when Mr Janzer did absolutely nothing wrong to warrant it ..Billy got upset and I can’t blame him but they calmed everything down after a ten minute delay between the JOJO match and Angelo ....JOJO winning really deflated the Rider crowd ..it really was an good match and met all the hype it was given ...I didn’t see the dust up after the match but don’t think it was as big as the first one got ...that really was a mess

Jeez, that's pathetic and embarrassing on their part. I wouldn't want to even think what those same a**holes would have done/said if Lipari (or Rider) would have actually won the match/dual. I would say that they should act like they've been there before, but they haven't and never will so let them wallow in the mud. That was their last chance to beat RU in a while and they got absolutely crushed at home. You love to see it.

After hearing about all the confrontations, seeing all of the tweets from our guys after the match makes much more sense now. There were numerous guys talking about the big brother/little brother dynamic and whatnot, which you typically don't see. I guess these altercations fired them up and they took it out on the guys on the mat.

I am surprised on Lipari's part, given his comments in the article about the match where he seemed to have turned the page.

I am not surprised in general. Rider acted completely classless before we agree to schedule a match with them, so people should have expected their coaches, fans and wrestlers would be completely classless now that it was scheduled.

It's easy to say all of the right things when you are calm and collected, especially to a reporter. That was a tough way to lose and I'm sure he wasn't in the best place, so it wouldn't take much to set him or his family off. I'm sure he wanted nothing more in this world to prove to everyone that he was right and they were wrong going with JoJo and that blew up in his face. Not an easy thing to deal with especially in a public manner with emotions/tensions running high.

There's a good reason why no one on our team respects Rider. This was their best chance to beat us and we absolutely curb stomped them into dust. Not sure if the series will continue next season but they don't have a prayer of beating us in the RAC.

Why hasn’t TruTv come out with a reality show where a bunch of wrestling dads have to live together?
How about the woman walking the length of the away stands while giving the crowd the finger salute with both hands? Now that was a classic. $$$$

I feel badly for Peter Lipari. The pressure on him must have been terrific and to lose in the last 2 seconds had to shatter him.

It speaks to the lack of leadership/coaching at Rider. Coaches need to help Pete out, get him off the mat and keep him calm in that situation. I really don’t understand the smack talking on social media by their asst coaches, in particular, Bedelyon. Where did the bad blood come from originally?

I had matside seats and I really didn’t see Pete do anything out of the norm other then a stare down during one of the officials reviews of something ..JOJO laughed it off with Pritzlaff which showed me he was handling the immense pressure pretty well ....when match ended he shook hands and didn’t seem a bad sport about it at all...the upcoming flare up really didn’t involve him that I could see ...if at the end of the meet he did something like someone describes I must have totally missed that ...I thought his interview showed a lot of class so maybe seeing the intensity of the coaches trying to get JOJO the win changed things ....who knows ...it was pretty intense the whole time and the flare up was kinda expected in my opinion knowing the dynamic of feelings toward the coaches the father had when the decision was made to not have JOJO redshirt and the ramifications it lead to ....actually I think it lead to a rekindling of Fire in our guys because they all fought every single minute of every match ....the first 2 matches set the tone and then when the Super Bowl started at 141 and we won that it was crazy there ..a good crazy ...

The coaches spent the majority of the meet holding up the stall sign yelling at the refs ..they were a disgrace ...

If Rider wants to wrestle at the RAC fine, but, I don't see much of a reason to wrestle them at their gym ever again.

I thought it was a great atmosphere, knowledgeable fans on both sides, and another chance to see my team within an hour's drive. The only problem was having MBB play at the same exact time. Let's head back there. $$$$

The after flare happened right in front of me on the court. Peter was coming after our coaches and I know Peter did not shake hands with the coaches in the walk through. Don’t know about the kids. Again the pressure on him was off the chart. I talked to him before and after the break. Those actions are not characteristic of who he is.

I am good with wrestling Rider at home.
How sweet is it to beat them like a drum in front of their fans?

There is a chance RU could lose to them, but I hopefully will never see that.

Ok..I was kinda focusing on whether the two dads were gonna escalate after the match since he was let back in near the end of the match ....didn’t see anything happen at the very end so assumed it was over ...sad that it happened at all but not surprising ...for something that wasn’t taken personal in the article it sure got personal especially towards the coaches as soon as he lost. .

If the match was a nooner and basketball was at night, Rutgers fans wouldve taken over even more of their HS gym.

Pete seems like a good kid. He was in Ash’s corner last year in Beat the Streets, seemed very Pro RU.
1- I am sure seeing his Dad getting in a flare up got him very upset regardless of who’s fault it was. You will always side with your family
2- I am sure this was his moment and he was very upset he lost. He wanted to get RU back and show them they made a mistake and to lose it the way was heart breaking for him.

Not trying to defend him at all, just trying to put shoe on other foot and how he probably felt and probably saw the stuff in stands.

I wouldn’t say we curb stomped them; 9 of the ten matches could have gone either way. We were last second wins by Pagano and Aragona and a 3rd period comeback by Aguilar from a one point match.... and that bonus point came at the buzzer at 133. We also won very close matches at 149, 165 and 184..... and HWT wasn’t decided until the last period.

Mr Lipari left right after Peter’s match and Peter was in the locker room do I doubt he knew or saw anything. As I said he is a great young man so the pressure and disappointment must have got to him to act that way. Wish him well the rest of the way.

It was very emotional on both sides an ultimately got out of hand.Seeing the match I still think JOJO would have still benefited from the redshirt. It is what it is and the next goal is to make the NCAA tournament. This might build JOJO's confidence in taking the next steps to elevate his wrestling. He can build upon this win into the BIG Ten tournament.

Wrestling in the heat of the moment can bring the best and the worse out of people.

It was priceless watching us beat up on Rider. There are many high school gyms bigger than the Rider gym.I don't understand why they can't build a much bigger capacity sports center.

Yes they did, they won the close matches, toss ups and even upset a few. Just like Illinois curb stomped us on Fri. 29-6. There were plenty of close matches and we lost them all because Illinois went out and got the win. They were the aggressor.

The team responded and did the same to Rider 25-6, instead of watching the clock they became the aggressor late and went out and got the win. They got the takedowns, escapes and rode their opponents when it counted. Even the losses were hard fought till the end. You act like they did this do to luck, no they went out and grabbed the win by the throat.
