The reality is that the fan base is less than 3000 season ticket holders and maybe 200 students.A major state university locate in NJ with over 8 million people really has no excuse for not filling a 8000 seat RAC other than the fact that there is very little interest in college basketball. This problem has been going on for decades without resolution because the athletic department lost interest and focused entirely on football.
Not so sure whether you are saying there isn't enough interest in college basketball to fll the RAC-if so that's not tRUe. The RAC was pretty damn full in the late 70s,early 80s and early 90s.
Unless perhaps you say under Pernetti, I wouldn't say there was "deliberate neglect" of the basketball program as there was poor leadership at the top of the athletic department-and some bad luck.
1) I bELieve R problems started in the late 70s when our AD Fred Gruninger decided the best course for Rutgers Athletics was to follow Penn State wherever to what league so that an all sports conference with Penn State, RU, Syracuse, BC, Pitt and a few others. The problem was there was infighting between Penn State and Syracuse, amongst else.
Syracuse, Pitt, Villanova and Seton Hall (after RU rejected 2-3 Big East invites)
left to form the Big East. Within a few years ESPN came on the scene and exploded. Rutgers found itself in two weaker conferences the Eastern 8 and Atlantic 10-and Bob Wenzel had trouble recruiting against the Big East that offered much exposure (what recruits want more than anything Wenzel said in a Court Club executive meeting to us)
via the ESPN Big East TV package. By the time Rutgers was admitted into the Big East 10+ years later Rutgers basketball had been bypassed by pretty much everyone in the Big East including Seton Hall.
2) For the next 20 years the Rutgers athletic administration threw the hoops program into the depths of Division 1 basketball by poor coaching choices.
First there was Kevin Bannon (poorly researched) who was abusive with such things as naked free throw shooting classes who was fired days after (just about everyone but me failed to followed the sequence as they were at work and I was at home) two of our transfers Josh Sankes (Holy Cross) and Charles Brown (LIU-led the NCAA in scoring average that year) had great 1st round NCAA games. The CBS announcers
discussed Sankes horrendous treatment by Bannon et al in John Feinstein's book about the Patriot League. This included 8 pages of dirt on RU. Supposedly Sankes was so nervous from Bannon's treatment he vomited at his first practice at Holy Cross. About that same day I myself brought up the book to an embarrassed Elliott Sachs (Microphone) and Todd Billet (book dicussed Billet and Sankes'? love for Monmouth Park race track) representing the team as Bannon was a no-show at the Court Club meeting.
3) Next up was the Gary Waters a great guy and impeccable dresser. However Gary was from the Midwest and supposedly refused to hire needed assistants. Waters was having some success and he had repaired the team's mental state from Bannon. The problem was our AD then Bob Mulcahy? had a hard on for ex Seton Hall Assistant and son of the great Fred Hill, Sr.) Fred Hill Jr. Waters was forced out in what resembled a coup. Hill Jr was overall a terrible recruiter and especially bad coach (also with a bad player wrap). Hill was also forced out in another coup like move for "prodigy" Mike Rice. I believe a bunch of players transferred and Rutgers already had a bad rep for the treatment of it's players-and had already affected recruiting.
4) Rice, like Bannon (in the later case I know there were incidents at Rider pre RU) was a
hotshot young coach who also had anger and player treatment issues. Then another stupid move was made by the hiring of former Providence star and NBA player-the malcontent Eric Murdock who had already snubbed RU for Providence out of Bridgewater West. Eric was for Eric (his brother told me his goal was head coach at Providence), didn't like the way Rice treated his players/ran practices-and spliced together a tape of "abuse" by Rice. Murdock gets fired/pushed out by RU, releases the tape to HBO? and the tape goes national. Rutgers gets mocked nationally with a segment on Jay Leno and skit on SNL.
Christie thinks all of this makes him look bad so he shifts the blame to the "untouchable" Tim Pernetti (who arguably abused the hoops program in other manners) who disciplined Rice but not enough for Chrstie. A national scandal erupts and Rutgers basketball pretty much hits rock bottom. No top recruits-or coaches are interested in Rutgers hoops.
5) Rutgers then turned and took "a chance" on our own Eddie Jordan who had been part of perhaps the top coaching staff at Rutgers- Wenzel's 89-90 staff of himself/Jordan/ Jeff van Gundy However perhaps in part due to all of the above and arguably not so good coaching
Jordan was unfortunately a disaster.
In sum the basketball program has suffered from 30+ years of poor leadership and decision making. It has cost RU many players, potential recruits, potential coaches, fans and LOTS of revenue (including payouts of coaching salaries). Under Barchi things seemingly R turning around. The facilities R improving and seemingly we've stuck gold with our currently coaching staff.
Fans like winners and like to see a return on their money. Once the winning starts (and arguably is already has) and the recruiting improves-I believe we will hear positive news sooner than later- the fans will be back en masse (maybe not sellouts) and the RAC will rock again!
