Wrestling MATCH THREAD: Rutgers 🤼‍♂️ vs. Ohio State

Exactly. And that is the big difference in this match. MVB has impressed me with his wrestling late last season and is hanging tough with some very good competition so far this year. But the situational awareness and the low percentage attempts have come back to bite him in this match.
Let’s be honest though. He’s not beating Sasso. It’s 2 different levels of wrestler. Reality is he wrestled very hard and well. If he can keep this up he’s NCAA qualifier and possible Rd of 12 guy.

125 - Another disappointment from Aguilar. Cant keep starting off flat with poor performances here. I’d argue we’d be live favorites to win the dual if he showed up. Seems like for the second time this year he hit a point and then quit the match.

133 - Alavarez looked exhausted. Hopefully it’s fatigue from injury and not from the weight cut. Good to see bonus points though.

141 - SeaBass with another good match vs a kid who was working hard

149 - Tough task for MVB but he looked great again. Nearly turned Sasso in the 3rd but couldn’t stick it. I like him at this weight class. Could be the senior that Goodale annually gets to make an AA run

157 - Kanniard improves off his last match and pulls off a big win. Hopefully he continues to get better.

Dumb comment for too many reasons to list
Not if it’s factual. Ask around the team if you know anyone and you will get the real answers. Do you think he’s just regressed without any explanation? And it’s not so much the it smoking. It’s a combo of it and just not that into wrestling any more. Why was Glasgow in CA hanging out when the him. Think that’s a good influence. Add 2 and 2 together people.

First half thoughts:

-Is it time to switch things up at 125?
Yes. 3yrs. in the program and looks worse now than when he 1st got here. Pull money and make his parents pay for college. The rest of the guys look really good so far. MVB is wrestling tough just running into the buzz saw of the B1G. Hope he keeps his head up cause come March he could possibly make a nice little run.

-Welcome back, Sammy
-Rivera is a hammer
-MVB is not to be taken lightly
-Kanniard is going to be really good
My nephew was very involved in high school wrestling for many years and knows RK and family. He has said from Day 1 that RK was going to be very good at RU.

I respect your passion but pulling money for not wrestling well is a terrible idea and not something any respected coach will do

I think MVB is actually gaining confidence, even in these losses. I really like what I am seeing from him.

Aguilar drives me nuts with the 50/50 positions after getting in on legs. He is always falling to a hip, and ends up in a scramble. I know how tough it is to finish a shot at this level, but your best course of action is to keep your hips underneath you, and your head high.

Action resumes at 165-lbs, where Brett Donner will take on Ethan Smith

Rutgers will be looking for Donner to keep this to a decision

I’m pretty sure OSU is going to have us on criteria if it comes to it so we need:

-Donner and Grello to hold the opponents to a major and a decision.
-Poz to pull an upset
-Janzer to take care of business with a decision
-HWT to hold opponent to a decision.

Not out of the realm of possibility but a decent ask. But if Poz wants to be a podium guy this year, he has to keep it close here.

Understood. My point though is late last year and so far this year, he is a much different wrestler. His progression is commendable.

Smith takes Donner down, but lets Donner up near the edge.

Smith leads 2-1 with over a minute left in the first period

Donner gets hit for a second stalling call, and gives up a takedown shortly after, giving Smith a 5-1 lead

Then they have no money to pull in another 125lber. Partial scholarships aren't guaranteed, you can give him less to entice someone else if he continues on with this disappointing season. It's that or roll with Aguilar for another year and don't invite him back for a 5th.

Period ends with Smith on top, maintaining a 5-1 lead.

Donner starts the second on bottom, and escapes right away

Smith cuts Donner, and Donner gets hit for stalling shortly after his escape. 8 - 3 Smith with 20 seconds left in the second period

Period ends neutral, as Smith holds on to a 8-3 lead.

Donner on top to start the third

RT locked for Smith, meaning he needs only one takedown to get the major over Donner

What about Shawver? We brought him in with a decent pedigree. Not a national champion caliber guy but he’s definitely talented.

Donner avoids giving up the major, as Smith wins 10-3. Not a pretty bout by any means, but Donner got the job done.

Joe Grello and Kaleb Romero now up at 174-lbs

Romero takes down Grello almost immediately after cutting him loose. Grello trails 4-1 with a little less than a minute remaining in the first period

Romero with another takedown on Grello after cutting him. Romero stays on top to finish the period, holding onto a 6-2 lead.

Grello starts the second period on bottom

Romereo lets Grello loose after about forty seconds of riding Grello.

6-3 Romero
