Football Max Melton & Chris Long Suspended

This happened last summer in Rochester. It wasn't a felony charge. These 4 dummies shot at more than 3 people too and caused some property damage.

I disagree. I agree that 90% don’t want to acknowledge.

As I said before I don’t have enough information to understand what being shot at with a paint gun means. To me it sounds like something that calling the police may be a hair overblown.
You admittedly don’t have enough info..yet you say this event has to do with racism.

I'd call and be pissed if I was hit. But after thinking about it realize it's not a big deal.

One other thing. I'm rewatching the DEL game in 60 minutes. We're gonna miss Max on the field, that idiot.

Should be standard,

Though a state would never do this and the example is ridiculous…yes.

you commit a felony..you’re done!

What happens if the Felony charges are lowered to less than felony through the legal negotiation process? Does this mean that they now do not need to be kicked off the team for the same actions they originally took merely due to legal proceedings?

True Story - my neighbor's son who had just turned 18 was charged with Felony Trespassing for mud-sliding during the Pandemic with his friends on as part of a reservoir property. By your standards, this action is worse than Drunk Driving as the DUI guy stays on the team but the mud sliding guy gets kicked off.

then they can be reinstated. They shouldn’t be on the team facing felony charges.

lol. This happening at PSU and most on this thread will be calling to shut down the program
I don't know if it'd be most or not. I wouldn't. But for sure some here would. As mentioned above, there's a lot of moral relativism going on in sports forums. And hypocrisy.

I wonder what the RUFB hate thread on the Syracuse board has to say about his incident. 😃

Got it......so to summarize your position
  • Plea deal to get Aggravated Assault felony charges dropped - OK by you - Go RU!!
  • DUI - OK by you.....Go RU!
  • Mud-sliding in the wrong place/wrong time - you are the devil and need to be kicked off the team.

You’d be surprised

I'd mentioned that our players were lucky nobody shot back w/real guns. It's the sheer stupidity of the act that bothers me more than anything else. A case of thinking "oh hey, this should be fun" without thinking about any of the potential negative consequences at all.

I did stuff like that when I was young. But I'd already started thinking about consequences by the time I was in college. And don't these guys get lectured by the coaching staff, or other FB program staff, about avoiding stuff where the negative consequences are magnified by being part of a nationally visible sports program?

I still think Max and Chris will wind up getting off with a slap on the wrist. Which I'm not opposed to, from a legal standpoint. But I think both Schiano and their parents should come down on them like a ton of bricks. For me, it's a kind of one-time mistake thing. Do anything even remotely like this again and you're gone.

Key word..kinda.

I’d still kick them off team. If charges get dropped or get lessened ..they’re free to join again next year
For a fourth degree felony, that is clearly a grey area, no way you should kick them off the team. This is clearly a spot where context matters and judgement needs to be exercised, not a mandatory sentence.

You can summarize my position even more:

You’re charged with a felony..you’re off the team.

simple as that, guys

and dui isn’t “fine by me..” please don’t put words in my mouth!

I'm not a big fan of absolutes like that. Even the courts are almost certainly going to let them off with community service. And, like DUI, if there's no harm, then the foul is less serious than if someone is seriously harmed.

In any event, we still don't know if Max and Chris are actually guilty of what they've been arrested for. Has there even been a successful indictment?

I remember, not too long ago, people here ready to hang one of our star WRs for a supposed assault. Then the "victim", whose story had all kinds of holes in it, wound up recanting and the charges wound up being dropped.

and if they’re not guilty..they play next season. Think of it as an 8 game suspension if that makes it sound better.

That approach, guilty until proven innocent, would seem likely to put off potential recruits. Again, I think the details of the situation are necessary for GS and the school to arrive at a reasonable response.

We don't even know for sure, despite news reports, exactly what Max and Chris did or didn't do here. So we shouldn't be trying them in the media here. Perhaps it's a case of mistaken identity. Perhaps they were in the car, but not shooting the paintball gun. Perhaps this was a case of back and forth pranks of similar nature between people who knew each other.

Or perhaps things are even worse than they appear in the media. We don't know what we don't yet know, right? And the way these things go, we'll probably never know the most pertinent details that are necessary to understand and judge the scale of the offense.

A question I have is whether both were shooters or one was the driver and the other one was the shooter. Should someone who is only the driver be charged the same as the shooter?

That's some BS right there.

Should it be an "indictable felony offense"?

Why is it an "indictable felony offense"?

That's friggin' nuts.
As I read what is posted here, it's a weapon used for something other than what it's intended for and it's felony assault. Is that correct according to the law? If so, it ain't BS..but agreed, it's nuts.

that’s why they’re eligible to come back to the team next year once things become clearer.

Just the fact they put themselves in that situation (guilty or not) is suspension worthy. What are you doing out at 10pm on Livingston campus on a Monday night with a paintball gun?! Whether they shot someone or not..just that is suspension worthy. Just a stupid thing they did

LOL. I don't need to and you wouldn't either if you knew what you're talking about instead of exercising your hysteria here.

Where's the loud sound come from? You're incorrect in assuming firearms and paintball guns sound anything alike.

Bullets don't sting. Bullets hurt - a lot - like kill you hurt. Like the trauma of getting hit by a car, but in one little place. The vics would be much more likely to think they were stung by a bee or hit with a rock then shot from a real gun. Plus the lack of sound.

No wonder so many of you are anti-gun. You know nothing about them.
Sorry Charlie. .you are way off base and jumping to incorrect conclusions. I have a FID card and own several firearms. So not anti gun. You are assuming everyone is as knowledgeable as you in differentiating paintball gun vs firearm and I'm pointing out they are not.

@RUScrew85 ...see, not everyone is as diligent in differenting between the two...

Not sure what happened, but part of 2008 turnaround was Britt and Davis getting suspended - woke players up. Most football players have a screw lose somewhere and sometimes wires arc. Greg handles these things well, and things can get better for the experience

Rutgers suspends WR Britt, LT Davis for Morgan State

I was reminded of this incident too but this is something probably most college students do which is legal now a little over a decade later versus something very few do, and something with no harm versus something that made people bleed.

I'm more concerned of prosecutors going out of their way to avoid all perception of preferential treatment for collegiate athletes, let alone the state university.

Exactly. I don't want RU to EVER be the crudhole in central PA. I don't care if it hurts in the W-L column, we're not tossing aside the law to win games.

How that working out for the state? Criminals here have them and people can’t defend themselves or their family ... brilliant

Actually working out well. NJ and other states with more stringent gun control laws generally have far fewer deaths (as a percentage of the population) from firearms than states with less stringent laws - it's just a fact. I own guns and have never had a problem with NJ gun laws.

Shooting a stranger with a paintball gun from a moving car resulting in BLEEDING is going to be a crime in all 50 states. How anyone cannot realize that is assault and/or battery is stunning. If you threw a rock out the window of a moving car causing the same injury would that be a crime?

I never want to be the Cult or Baylor or whoever where this swept under the rug or the cops do nothing. That's corrupt, sickening and not what I want for my alma mater whatsoever.

They may get a reduced charge come November and that's fine if that's what pled or decided by a judge, but they should definitely be suspended until then. Completely stupid.

What Oregon (or whoever) does is their problem for their school or alumni to deal with. I don't know if they left bleeding victims or not but the fact is these two did and they need to pay the consequences.

From a strictly football perspective for the luminaries who care about nothing else, gee, what kind of smarts does it take to do this the week of the most important game of the year?

This isn't underage drinking or dumb social media activity that 99% of students do. Most people never in their life drove a car and shot paintballs at strangers with good reason.

This involves the Legal lane, which the prosecutor will likely follow sentencing precedent, and also public relations areas re: how has RU punished similar acts in the past with others. RU can't afford a football player double standard here. The media coverage would be scathing, as it should be if a football player escapes penalty that Joe Student was kicked out of school for.

I would expect there's an honor code for all students. Schools don't take that lightly.

In this situation it is either a 0 or 1
0-didnt exist
1-it did exist

We will never know. If you think the expected number is exactly 0 you are dead wrong. I'll bet the number is somewhere close to the middle.

I covered 2 separate topics and you seem to be answering both with 1 answer. All I can say that with respect to getting shot with a paint ball and the race of a shooter affecting whether someone would call the police, it's (ironically) Ivory Snow territory. For 99 and 44/100ths percent it would make no difference.

not 99.44%. No way.

I can’t believe all the BS in this thread . Melton and Long f&cked up . Not a major f$ck up but a f$ck up. They are suspended and will remain suspended until this is resolved . Then they will be reinstated and life goes on

It sucks melton is gonna miss Michigan. Let’s talk football

Thank You Plum… that is exactly what should happen a punishment to fit the crime. The serious nature is valid but the over the top attitude by some posters is pure nonsense however it is typical for Rutgers unique board patrol. and has been this way since the late 60’s . The holier than thou club.

Greene...we’re talking about getting shot at. People were injured. Do you honestly believe people are less likely to call the cops if the shooters werent black ? Dude, enough.

1000% agree race issues are a stain on our country and are woven into more areas of society than most realize (healthcare access, education, etc) but not in this matter.

Thanks for making that decision for all of us. Please, as a third generation Rutgers alumnus I am ready to win, I don't care if we have a couple CBs who fired a paint gun out of their car window playing on Saturday if that helps us win. The fact is they were playing games with their own lives, they could have aimed at the wrong person and have been shot in retaliation. One game suspension is plenty, let's put the holier than thou attitude where it belongs, on the ash heap of history. I pay my money for season tickets to see a winning team, not to see a bunch of choir boys lose every year to OSU and Penn State. Enough is enough, if big time college football offends or sickens you then maybe it is time for you to find something more pure to invest your time.

You can’t compare the two. As dumb as this was , this incident is more boys being boys. Penn state it was more raping boys .

I am not comparing Sandusky, but rather when Joe Pa tried to prevent players from being arrested or disciplined to the point he had someone fired over it.

Maybe root for Baylor or the NFL, though even they would probably be pretty mad about this.

Also we can and have beaten great teams with players who spend weeks in September in the film room not assaulting their fellow students.
