Maybe I'm in the minority here...I think our season will go how we DEFEND the three and not SHOOT IT

Guys:

Think its a given that we aren't going to be a great three point shooting team. Think we will be okay there (certainly with some nights where that percentage is downright ugly...and other times where we shoot it quite solid)

so...I think that there is a range there that for most games we will see it at

What I am most concerned about...and the thing on the TOP of my list to see improvement is defending the arc and the three point shot. We MUST do a better job of getting up and defending and not allowing the space to shoot and a MUCH MUCH better job of getting over ball and AWAY screens that lead to open three point shots.

Think that the three point shot defense percentage is more favorable than it could be with the overall quality of shots and open looks seen against us behind the arc.

That WILL catch up to us as the competion gets better and to me...the thing that we MUST do BETTER heading out of OOC in conference play if we want to think bigger things for this season than just a winning record at 16-15...

Shack, I think many of us agree with your assessment regarding defending the three. We have had too many defensive lapses in that area. I'm sure SP and staff are on the kids all of the time. In the B1G do we need to switch it up more between man and zone to combat the perimeter passing for open looks? I don't know. But it appears that whoever we've played thus far always seems to get open looks. And as we know in some of those instances two or more guys on the opposition have gone hot on us (see Stony Brook). I think Stony Brook shot nearly 50% from beyond the arc. That's a major problem for us going forward with our B1G schedule.

I'm sure SP going forward will stress certain defensive schemes against certain B1G opponents to offset that, especially because we are not a good three point shooting team and we can't try to keep up with the opposition there as you stated. I just hope we can combat that, while boxing out down low and getting rebounds on the defensive glass as well as long rebounds in the paint that clang off the rim for second chance looks by the opposition.

I mentioned this last week. It's an either or situation.

I also think it's how we defend it. Which is how it should be. We are not going to become a great shooting team over night.

Defense is more effort and awareness than skill.

It's a 2 way street....until shown differently I believe we have closed the gap considerably. How the basketball gets shot on BOTH ends of the court will have a greater impact on results.

Maybe i am naive but I am hoping how we defend the 3 becomes more a constant than a variable. Whether fully contested or partially contested shots go in will always be the variable.

Last year being concerned with how our back up guard shoots free throws would have been laughable. Fast forward to 2016-17 and it is something that would have merit discussing.

Defending the three is easier said than done. If you play tight defense against the three, it leaves you vulnerable for an easy layup. As Carril said, opponents had to pick their poison against his Princeton teams -- either guard shots beyond the arc, which allowed space inside for backdoor layups or guard the interior and leave guys open for good looks at the three.

With 3-point shooting such a critical phase of basketball now, I think it's more important to guard the three and live with giving up some layups each game. A few layups during the course of a game don't seem to kill you nearly as much a team drilling a bunch of 3-pointers.

That's why SP values preparation for each team. Some teams may have let's say 1 or 2 guys that are good 3 pt shooters. SP plan would be focusing on defending thosee guys. I think he said it best..if we lock down on the D, he knows we should score enough to compete. I know it will be tough in BIG play, but more importantly, I'm anxious to see how we "compete"!! Minimal blowouts!! We will be able to assess our team's improvement as we go through BIG schedule game by game and how good SP puts in a good game plan.

I agree. Especially when you think of getting fouled, easier shots.

Pikiell and co have the defense running all right at the moment. Identify their shooters, stick with their shooters. A good man to man defense though can defend against anything, but it has to be very, very good. You only have a couple of coaches that can run it. Ie-Virginia.

Michigan hit 19 three pointers last night vs Central Arkansas. It is imperative that RU do a much better job in league than they did OOC because the stakes are much higher and rough patches that can be overcome against weak sisters cannot be overcome against Big 10 competition

I've brought up defending screens a few time this season so I think you're spot on. I have seen a little improvement in this area. We have to defend them well to stop and 3 and prevent bad switches - some of our lineups are very easy to exploit if a switch has to be made.
