Seems like many of Ash's new hires are from Midwest

If you were to offer them advice on getting to know our state, what would you recommend?

I would say a drive down the jersey shore during offseason would be pretty amazing

Agree they are from the Midwest, but these guys are national coaches in outlook and ability. Hopefully we'll all be crying that we don't want them to leave as they move up the coaching ladder.

As for the state thing: summer weekend at Ocean Grove, week in Elizabeth with a NYC commute or two through the Lincoln Tunnel during rush hour, camping weekend somewhere in the Pine Barrens with the NJ Devil, trips to NB-town, Newark and Hackensack. During the visits there should be a cuisine tour as well: diners, Taylor Ham and egg, bagels, pie, subs, trip to Islen and Little India, Grease Trucks, etc. Subway is off limits.

Come to NJ immediately. Do not pass Go, do not go to bowl games, start meeting and building relationships with the high school head coaches who yield the most influence to start re-building the foundation and in the interim, start identifying and meeting those top players we have the best shot at getting if we can sell them on you and the program. Visit the Jersey Shore after the recruiting window has closed.

Get them Google Maps and they will be fine. Other than the jug handles it's not that complicated.

I would tell them a few things:

1. Don't start saying gabbagool or mutzadell. Be yourself.

2. Drive defensively, particularly around BMWs on the road. They make you pass some sort of asshole test before they let you buy one.

3. Mind your own business. When you are out, do not strike up conversations with strangers. They will assume you are up to no good.

4. Don't mind us brown people. Most of us are just like you. Some wear funny hats or don't eat pork. Some are actually Italian who eat only pork!

5. Selecting a beach house is an extremely complicated process. Do your homework. You don't want to pay $3mn on a home only to see some drunk urinating on it later that night. Get to know the town and the culture before making your choice.

I strike up conversations with people everywhere I go. And never have had an issue.

Don't read this site, everyone has two things in common, buttholes and opinions, and neither are worth their time

My experience with most visitors is that they are (pleasantly) surprised how the landscape of NJ can change so dramatically with merely a 1/2 hour car trip. So the mid-west guys should be pleased by this aspect of NJ.

Although the staff selections thus far have mostly been young, they seem to be solid with high upsides. I am concerned, however, with the lack of NJ connections. The NJ high school coaches can be tough on outsiders. If RU has a bad season next year, certainly possible given the schedule, staff changes, and losses of personnel, negative momentum could build. I am hoping Ash rounds out the staff with some NJ talent.

The NJ coaches perceived attitude is unwarranted. Most are good people. They seems to welcome all coaches with respect regardless where they may be from. As such their main I retest us and should be the student athletes they coach. So unless there is a real problem csn we put the in state out 9f state coaches' reception to rest. And for Rutgers it's an entirely new staff and ball game. In fact because much of the new staff is ftom out of the area it presents an advantage in recruiting athletes in areas where they have established contacts. Much has to do with the integrity and effectiveness of the coach.

We can win without many NJ players....nearly all nationally ranked teams do
let the new coaches do their jobs
get good players...win...and the NJ kids will beg to come aboard....

That can be a good thing. My impression of NJ football is that it can be a bit of a soap opera where different high schools, colleges, coaches etc interacted a lot over time, and there are as many enemies as their are friends. Iowans cant be blamed as quick for not kissing the right butt

Midwesterners need to know that New Jerseyans look down on everything New Jersey, including Rutgers. Everything is better once you cross the Hudson or the Delaware. So bring your own players (BYOP) and don't expect to successfully recruit in-state. Screw Fight or Flight. #BYOP
