Segment on OTL this morning about Rice and what he's been doing the past 26 months. Also interviewed Murdoch. Two things that's stood out to me:

1 - Rice is still a passionate intense and fiery guy. Even after 2 years it appears it's a long shot that Rice will ever land a job back with a D1 team.

2 - Eric Murdoch is still a slimeball. Talked about how kids wanted to commit suicide while playing under Rice. If it was that bad then why did he wait until he got fired to step up...

I would love to see how a Bob Huggins practice is. Rice not the only intense guy and Andy Katz said a number of coaches said they changed how they did things.

"Eric Murdoch is still a slimeball. Talked about how kids wanted to commit suicide while playing under Rice."

Defamation. Actual malice. Rice should sue Murdoch.

Mike Rice and Gary Waters are the two men most responsible for my passion for Rutgers basketball.

In fact, without Rice, there is no Court Club right now...

I'll go to war with them anytime...

Did anyone question Murdoch when he said "players wanted to commit suicide." That a pretty dumb thing for him to say. Because a) he's either lying or b) he thought guys wanted to kill themselves and instead of doing anything with that knowledge, he blackmailed the school. That's a real dirtbag. I'm not saying Rice is innocent. He was wrong, but Murdoch is not clean in this either.

I didn't see OTL, but to say something like that is extreme and shows how much of a fraud and idiot he is.

If My son was one of the players on that team, Mike Rice would have had to sue me for stomping the crap out of him.
You guys are unbelievable. But predictable.

No one here is siding with with Rice. Everyone here aknowledges what he did was wrong. We all just hate what a slimeball Murdoch is since TP lost his job because of him.

No he didn't-----he made an error in judgement that the things that went on in practice weren't firable offenses.

The Administration disagreed and dismissed him.

Not true. The administration and RU legal council told TP to not fire Rice

TP should have lost his job. But he didn't lose his job because Murdock spoke up.
He and Rice lost their jobs because Rice is a asshole who believes the way to prepare young men to play a game is to bully them, intimidate them, harass them, humiliate them and worst to physically assault them daily.
Passion??? Cut it out.
TP was the Boss. He should have been aware. He should have identified that the method being applied in his program was unappropiate. The fact that TP was a program favorite and otherwise capable and effective AD does not supercede the abuse of the young men. You guys loved when Mike Rice went on his tirades on the sidelines. You supported his antics. Once the video surfaces Eric Murdock becomes the slimeball. You guys need to look at yourselves. I'm not gonna say its the same thing as being a Paterno apologist, but it is the same mind set.
And to put Mike Rice and Gary Waters in the same category is disrespectful BK.
Unbelievable.

Talked about how kids wanted to commit suicide while playing under Rice. ...

If Murdock said this, then he is more of a degenerate than I thought for not doing something about it then and just saying it now to be a spiteful jerk and pad the spin for his lawsuit. Despicable human being.

Listen Mrs. Murock. I get you want to defend your son, but please. Lets remember what happened here.

Yes, Rice was out of control sometimes. He should have known better. He lost his job because of it.

But sorry, your son is a slimeball. He only instituted the lawsuit and went on his vengeful rage after he was FIRED!

He was at practice every day, never thought it rose to the level that he needed to report it immediately.

The other coaches were there every day, and none thought it rose to the point of needing to be reported.

The beat writers were there for numerous practices, saw RIce in action, but again, none thought it was bad enough to report. Brendan Prunty saw numerous practices, Politi says he saw RIce at a few practices as well, and Even they didn't report it.

Most of the players said Rice was intense, but friendly, supportive, and caring off the court. Most players defended him, some didn't like being called names, but have you ever been coached? Do you really think Hall of fame coaches like Coach K or Roy Williams never yelled derogatory names at their players?

And the idea that he brings it up now that players wanted to commit suidcide? And he did nothing about it? Spinning everything toward what a little abused victim I am with the big bad coach needing to be taught a lesson.

Sorry Mrs. Murdock, Rice's behavior was wrong, but your son will always be a spiteful, money grabbing slimeball.

A few things jumped out to me. First was the suicide claim. Second was the "as a black man, you don't go to your superior" (something along those lines), not sure how much validity that has. Sounds like an excuse for why he didn't do anything sooner, but maybe I don't see it from his shoes. And lastly was the claim that practice was way worse than the video. We've seen the same two minutes replayed, from what, 100+ hours? So what else happened that made practice a war zone?

People did not lose there jobs because of name calling. So don't start calling me names. The tape speaks for itself. My post was directed towards TP and Rice. Not reporters or other coaches. And it is not true that most of the players said That Rice getting physical was not a regular part of there practices. A couple of players said they didn't think his tactics were that bad.
But as mature adults ( and I'm assuming your that ) we know it is that bad.
If you don't know then that's your business.
Again I would have had to be restrained from the guy. And I'm glad EJ is here.
I hope you pull and root and defend EJ with the same childish argument when the rest of the board jumps on him after his first loss of the season.

^No one is defending Rice. He should be gone..... but it's ridiculous some of the things Murdoch is saying. Why don't you get that? He's a slimeball who tried to blackmail the school and and went to ESPN. Let me ask you something treauRU, if you're an assitant coach and you're afraid some of your players are going to "commit suicide" because of the head coach wouldn't it make sense to go to the authorities and not ESPN? Scott Van Pelt and Ryan Russillo on ESPN radio were in the minority who called out Murdoch and the overall shadiness of his timeline/events. How convenient for that tape to survace during the week leading up to a Final Four that lacked exting match ups.

I don't make childish arguments when a coach loses a game, but I do know Murdock's behavior was deplorable, something you failed to dispute in your rant.

Playing devil's advocate. He made fun of Kone and Biruta's accent and heritage (my issue with Rice, not tapes). Do we know for sure if a player like Biruta had many things negative going on in his life and this was one of them?

I also witnessed during a game Rice verbally going after Murdock on the bench and it was VERY uncomfortable watching it.

Murdock is certainly not a friend of the program, but Rice had it coming to him. It is unfortunate for us Rutgers fans.

No need to play Devi's Advocate. I think would all agree with you.

Biazza38 I hear your point. I just think that the Scandal was more about Rice and less about when where or how he was outed. I'm not pro Murdock other than grateful that it put a end to Rice's tenure here.
I am not a Rutgers alumni. But I'm a Jersey boy, have lived a stones throw from its campuses my entire life. I love the program and I pull for its student athletes. I love the fact that we do not buy players or fake grades to win. For me Rice was embarrassing to explain when in a fan setting and I'm rooting for the R. I mean I am always in a minority when I'm cheering my team on. To have to defend Rutgers without defending Rice was torture lol. I'm glad its behind us.
I happy with what I'm seeing with EJ and staff. My fingers are crossed tightly for Mr Parker. I'm a TreauRU Fan.

Well said. "Mrs. Murdock" is obviously a bit off as it pertains to the actual facts.

And you can count me among the many who sat in frequently on Rice practices and never saw anything other than a coach doing his job. I wonder how hard Frank Martin and Bob Huggins laughed at all this...

Bk have you witnessed any of the actions at the root of Rice's dismissal during any of your sit ins.

I think this answered that question> BKIn118 said:

Looks like you won't accept Rice was a butthead at a few practices and Murdock spliced his tape from them to make it look like
something that happened at. just about every practice .
Doesn't absolve Mike Rice, but proves Murdock can't be trusted to tell the full story truthfully
and only turned in the video for his own benefit, not the players.

No matter how you look at it, Murdock acted like scum , looking for a payday.
Rice came off as someone who shouldn't be coaching at any level, the way that video made him look.

I said it then and will say it again now - I have no problem with anything I saw Mike Rice do on those tapes. I would play for him and would let my son play for him.

There has to be a place in this world for strident masculinity and athletics is the best place for it. If a person is too emotionally fragile for a mentor/tormentor coach then they should play for someone else or, alternatively, go back to pre-school until they learn that sticks and stones can break their bones but names can never hurt them.

As for Murdoch, the biggest mistake Mike Rice ever made was hiring that dipshit. He was insubordinate as an employee and ultimately proved to be vindictive as well. What a disasterous hire he was for both Mike Rice and Rutgers.

I would like to beleive that the tapes were the exception and not the rule...but I think the university would have done it's due diligence and not terminated rice if they were isolated incidents.

Having said that...Eric Murdoch is just as off in all of this...and maybe more.
Not Bedause he blew the whistle...but how and when he did it

I was present for actions depicted in some of that video, yes. Didn't bother me then, still doesn't now.

No kids for JK and I, but I'd also have no problem letting Rice coach them if I did.

I agree

Forgiving Mike Rice is a lot like catching your wife with both neighbors, getting a divorce,,,,then a few years later going to her wedding and worrying about what to get for a wedding gift

Some things are unforgivable...

If only Pernetti had hired the right guy for the job the first time around.

The right guy might have been hired...my question, I don't know the answer, was there anything done behind the scenes to monitor Rice's behavior. Pernetti knew what he hired.

If I am Pernetti (who I really liked as an AD but turns out had some flaws), I watch alot of Mike Rice's practices in person and/or send a trusted assistant to monitor all practices for at least those first two years until I am convinced he was not going overboard. BTW I am glad Rice is not coach any more, not because of what he was doing on those tapes, but because I think he is just an ok coach. I like EJ's Fatherly approach alot better than Rice's crazy Uncle approach and he will take RU to a much higher level than Rice would have.

funny story - was in Rebounds last week playing pickup. One of our gang said that coach is an a$$hole - who is he. Of course it was Mike Rice.

Not Bedause he blew the whistle...but how and when he did it

Rice was fired because of the media/public backlash, as he was already punished for his actions, and protocols were put in place during Rice's last season to make sure that behavior didn't happen again...

Wow, lot of revisionist history in this thread. Pernetti made a bad choice in hiring a guy with Rice's known baggage and then failed to oversee a guy with serious issues. Sure, Murdock was a d-bag in essentially blackmailing RU, but that doesn't happen if Rice isn't captured on video abusing young men he has absolute power over (few more lopsided power equations than college coaches vs. college players), both physically and emotionally.

And TP failed utterly in not immediately firing Rice when the video surfaced (and not getting Barchi on board with it - Barchi also was a complete absentee leader during this), because these videos always get into the media's hands. Always. Any moron would've known the firestorm that would result if (when) that happened and to not proactively fire Rice was TP's fatal mistake. I loved that he closed the deal on the B1G (that Bob and, especially Greg, made possible), but that's all he really did well - jury is still out on Flood.

I just hope Eddie can bring this program back to competitiveness. I actually have some hope now, but we have a long way to go. People should still be pissed about what Rice did to this program. I'd take Waters over him a million times over.

I've been around Rutgers basketball for at least as long as BK and have been invited to watch practice with all the coaches going back to Waters. I went to one of Rice's practices a few days before a Seton Hall game and I came away with the feeling that Rice was an out of control ass. This was his first season and YES TP knew it and let it go. I can go on with details but me know the story and I am amazed that BK puts him in the same sentence with Waters, who was a true gentleman.

There's no need to get personal here m friend. You obviously don't know the man that Rice is...and that's OK. Not many here do. I'm not claiming to be the man's best friend, but I've had many one on one convos with Rice, in settings ranging from the RAC floor to his home. He isn't a monster. His passion for the game transformed my fandom into a tangible way to give back to the fans, players, program and university. I wanted to do more because of Mike Rice.

Gary Waters was and remains an ambassador for the game of college basketball, as does Coach Larry Desimplare. Both remain friends of ours and they and their families have been there for Janet and I in some of our darkest hours. They opened the door for me to discover my passion for this program beyond just sitting in the stands.

Two very different men...but I owe them both so much.

After what Rice did to our program I dont care what happens to him and dont care one iota what someone THINKS his character "really" is.

He brought shame, negative press and left the team in a shambles. Why anyone would defend him is beyond me.

I do agree about Waters as I always thought he was totally railroaded and to this day he is a great ambassador of the game and has been a gentleman in every regard. THATS character.

Rutgers is its own worst enemy way too often.
