I was thinking aboht this today after rereading Sargents article about the game on Wedneaday. We missed about 20 points worth of layups. Is anyone surprised? Next game you are see how we approach pre game and halftime warm ups. It is a non chalant affair. My wife noticed at the umass Lowell game that our players were literally dancing Instead of practicing seriously.

This is probably just a small thing but it goes directly on the coaching staff. There is no one out there watching practice not even a grad assistant. These bad habits roll directly into game play and are solely on the staff.

I'm not reaching for anything here as it is just an observation.

I agree, the missed layups and shots near the basketball were due to the lack of an organized layup drill before the start of the game. Everyone knows there is a direct correlation between your pre-game layup lines and how you shoot layups in the game. The connection is so obvious I am very surprised you even posted this.

Bring back Rice and football pads at halftime in layup lines.

There is too much nonchalance at layup lines with players dancing and trying ridiculous dunks 3 minutes before tipoff. It bothers me a bit, but I think things have changed and it isn't a RU only thing.

Pre-game is about getting loose to ensure they are not tight or nervous at tipoff, hence, the dancing, dunking and anything else going on. The time for working on stuff is practice sessions

Attention to detail also rebounds. I wrote this before when Indiana kid missed first foul shot with a minute to go. Said to Indiana fan next to me he will miss foul shot and Indiana will get rebound. Sure enough that is what happened, and I saw this when Rice was coach. Rebounding needs to be better.

The number one reason for blown layups is strength and conditioning.

Period

If your strength and conditioning is good ...you go up strong for a layup (or dunk) and are on balance. You aren't winded so you go up strong. You go up on an angle that your defender can't challenge as well and if they do they are more likely to foul. You go up focused eyes on the hoop. You follow through.

The same goes for free throws
And open shots from the perimeter

There are so many areas where Rutgers mens basketball needs improvement. The fact that the same problem areas are mentioned every year is a clear indication to me that the lack of talent and the lack of player development have become the norm along with losing seasons.

how about being able to use both hands...agree with your premise though

This was noted in a presser my Eddie and by some that have seen practices in recent years. You have a relatively good offensive game plan with the coaches, but it does require more remedial or basic skill sets to succeed.

I know other schools don't seem to miss as many layups, but it does go back to fundamentals. Does it impact on the win-loss record this year?? Probably not, but it does show itself more often than not when you don't move as fast or are required to go as fast during practice. Players that practice harder and play harder during practice, don't struggle during games with finishes within 3 to 5 feet.

It also comes down to having to be more precise when your athleticism isn't as strong as some teams. We have good athletes in most spots, so it's not a lack of lift or ability to get off the floor. At the same time, schools like Wisconsin show an immediate and noticeable drop off in execution and play as Bo Ryan departs. It has to be coaching and attention to detail at this level. There isn't any other way to explain it.
