I'm sure Flood understands that his fate is tied to the performance of the team, which is tied to the performance of the QB. And while Flood is no genius coach, he's actually not stupid, despite your earlier rhetoric on that point.Yeah, but in this case they don't. They really don't, which is pretty damn sad.
I have no doubt at all that Flood and crew are putting the people they see as having the best chance of winning games on the field. There must be things they see w/Rettig in practice, in the scrimmages or the first half of the game he played in, that lead to think that whatever fan-observable qualities he has, Rettig has less chance of winning the game than Laviano.
Or else Rettig would be playing. Because Flood wants to keep his job.
I admit that I would probably be quicker to sit a QB having a bad game when the backup is as close to as good as the starter. But I also recognize the merits of Flood's philosophy of sticking with one guy and letting him gain experience and confidence.
So even though I might opt to give Rettig a shot, I don't have any kind of expectation that he's would come in and light things up consistently. I think he'll be much like Laviano. Some good plays, some bad plays. Maybe better in some ways and worse in others.
I think this theory that Retting is obviously much better is logically unsupportable. Because Flood isn't actually stupid and Flood does want to keep his job.
