As I mentioned last month, this may or may not happen. From what I was told, here goes--The Newark Bears stadium in Newark which is only about 15 years old was recently sold to a developer who is going to tear it down and build a multi-use office/residential tower. The Bears folded a couple years ago and sold off some items.Rutgers Athletics is looking into purchasing parts of the stadium--lights,a variety of equipment, scoreboard, etc. IF this happens, major kudos to Hobbs and staff. Again, I stress that I am getting this way down the grapevine, not from someone in the Athletics department. I figured it would be OK to post this now since I heard about it weeks ago, which probably means people have been looking into this for quite some time. As far as I know, no events are planned at the stadium once Rutgers-Newark and NJIT baseball finish their seasons. I don't know when the wrecking ball is supposed to arrive. This would be a nice upgrade to Bainton Field if Rutgers could add these improvements. Let's hope for the best.

While I'm sure that RU can purchase items for pennies on the dollar, I'm not sure I'd want to puff my chest out over this news.

It's like moving into a new home then buying furnishings from the Englishtown Flea Market.

Wrong. It's both a smart abd shrewd move in a number ways.

Newark Bears Stadium is 17 years old. Not exactly new by today's standards. May as well check EBay to see if something newer is available.

Lights are lights. Bulbs can be replaced.

Would the scoreboard likely be a huge upgrade? Damn right it would.

$$$ is still an issue so this would be a win/win.

It's not like Englishtown where you're buying something plastic that looks like wood or a Guccie lol hand bag. This is the real stuff.

Sounds like a very smart move to get some fairly new equipment which can be installed and used with very little or no modification.

My father in law who goes EVERY Sunday would disagree with you.

Put that Scorebord in the North Endzone . We need one there.

Sucks for RU Newark and NJIT. They will be without a field...again. When I played there in the 90's our home field was Smith Field in Parsippany.

And didn't RU Newark renovated their field in that it would be a soccer/softball field because baseball was at Bears Stadium?

RU Camden baseball still playing at Riversharks stadium even though they don't exist anymore. Nice facility. Way better than the Trenton Thunder stadium.

If it is a good deal for RU fine. If it is to help bail out Joe D. from a bad investment, not so much.

We should buy the seats while we're at it too and build a baseball stadium. I'll go out there and hammer some wood if they need help putting the bleachers ip

Hey Heaven, I know that the Clark/Beaty family is interested in getting jerseys that are half Clark/half Beaty on the back with their numbers on it as well. Where could they look in to creating these type of jerseys?

How could anyone criticize this? Yes new money is coming in but you still have to be smart with your money. Buying upgrades for value is a smart move, especially when we have so many holes to fill.

CNJKnight,
Scarlet Fever in New Brunswick MIGHT be able to create something like that. Give them a call at 732-247-4678 and ask for Steve, the owner. His store has been there for a zillion years.

Scoreboards can really be expensive, so if RU can get one on the cheap, why not?
The only concern about the lighting would be the expense of operating them vs. newer ones which could pay themselves off over time with lower operating costs.
Besides, how many places are looking for a scoreboard anyway? Could definitely be a buyer's market.

I wonder what the cost would be to relocate the entire stadium. Shit if RU could buy the entirety of the physical stadium and truck it to campus, that would be something.

Let's think REALLY Big, make a deal with Liberty Helicopters for FREE advertising and have them haul the Maedowlands/Brendan Byrne/Continental Airlines/Izod Arena from East Rutherford to Piscataway !!!!!!!

Essex County should have secured an affiliation deal with a MLB team first before building the stadium.
Wasn't going to happen as long as the Mets or Yankees don't give permission for Newark to have a team. Yanks tried to get their AAA team play in Newark but Mets said no. The county should've known that instead of building a stadium for a team playing in a league filled with has beens and never was.

More reason for me to hate the Mets & Wilpons.

A Mets fan but never a Wilpon fluffer. But I'm pretty sure Yanks would've said no as well. Or maybe not.

Bears were a ton of fun to watch

We used to go all of the time - players were always great to my kids

It was rare than there were more than a few hundred people in attendance when we were there.. Had no idea how they lasted as long as they did

I just looked up pictures of the Newark stadium. 6 banks of lights, 4 along the foul lines and 2 behind the outfield fence in LF and RF. Scoreboard isn't state of the art but would be a definite upgrade.
