Mulcahy Highlights

I think some of you guys confuse being quick or fast with being able to get by defenders at will . Mulchay and others can get to the basket playing at different speeds and by changing pace as well as being a good ball handler and having good footwork . All of that is just as important if not more important than quickness .

As a high school coach changing pace and playing at different speeds is the hardest to teach kids and some kids just naturally have it like Mulchay does . I have two lightning quick guards on my team but in the half court , one changes speed and eye level and the other one just goes as fast as he can .. guess which one gets by his defender more often and is much harder to guard ?

Larry Bird wasn't too fast or athletic as well. He became a very good player. I cannot understand why people are trying to rip into Paul's game. I saw him play and believe he is very good. Just let him play. Not everyone needs to be so quick. It is like too many people believing that if a pitcher cannot throw a ball 95-100 mph that he could not become an outstanding pitcher. There are some pitchers who pitch very well by throwing pitches at much slower speeds. Please just let Paul play basketball. He is only 15 or 16 years old.

Please go back and reread. Nobody ripped the kid. Just asking legitimate questions for conversation. I know that Pikiel knows more than any of us and I have faith in him.

He is a perfect compliment to the faster paced play and makes other players around him better....If he develops any consistency in the next year with his shooting, he becomes a player that nobody is going to gameplan and stop, but will wind up with 10-11 points, 6 rebounds and 4-5 assists most nights with minimal turnovers from a SF/PG hybrid position.....and if you foul him, he's knocking down FT's, so he won't need 9-10 shots a game to get double digits.

Mulcahy on a court with Mathis, Baker and Thiam/Kiss makes all of those players better scorers.

Union, I think you are wrong. There are several comments that Paul is slow and not athletic and cannot help us. That is not asking questions. I trust Coach Pikiell completely. Let him decide.

Your 3rd guard that is on the bench.

I like this kid a lot. He would be a very solid 4 year player for us. Big contributor.

The ability for guards to have the cross over dribble and stop on a dime with a jump shot are the difference makers,ie, Jayson Williams.Rutgers has lacked such a player for a long time.

With all due respect Jay Williams played two years at Duke, was 1st team All-American twice and won National college player of the year as a Soph. Every team in the country (sans Duke, UNC, Kentucky) have "lacked such a player".

Is he a legit 6'5"? He may grow into a Euro-style forward that can stretch defenses and hit the 3 as well as blow past the big guys having to defend him way out of their comfort zones.

Not to mention Harper, battle and Hyatt

I think I am going to refrain from joking about his shot.

If the tape is from his sophomore year, then that is pretty impressive. But I agree that he does not look quick and that shot is begging to get stuffed. But what is he? 15? He could develop into a first rate ballplayer.

Guards need to be evaluated on various skillsets,ie,passing, dribbling ,3 point shooting ,shooting off the dribble, getting to the basket and finishing, foul shooting and court awareness. On defense defending without fouling and blocking out for rebounds are key indicators.Quickness is a favored attribute but can be masked if the other skillsets are at a high level.

Guards that check all or almost all those boxes are first round picks. You can still be a very good college player with only some of those boxes checked.

the one thing that really popped out was court awareness. the second the double team came, he put the ball in the right spot. I like how he uses moves (like the up and under) on the move to get around faster defenders. He seems to be a smart player.

The issue he will have is getting the penetration in the B1G to create the situations that he can excel at.

How is his handle? the vid didn't really give much of an appreciation. Can he really play point at this level? a 6-5+ court general really does change the game (with or w/o a consistent outside shot).
