NCAA Tourney Saturday Night Games Thread

We have a fan base that doesn’t understand why we aren’t a tournament team every year, and trashes Pike because he has only won one game in the Tournament.
Yeah but we didn’t have that in 2016 either.

A lot of people not understanding the linear nature of time (or at least the human perception of time) in this thread.

What are you talking about?

As of the conclusion of the 2016 season (i.e. when Rutgers hired Steve Pikiell):

Steve Pikiell
192-156 (109-71)
4 regular season conference championships
1 NCAA appearance
3 NIT appearances

Danny Hurley
100-87 (54-50)
0 conference championships
0 NCAA appearances
1 NIT appearance

To be fair URI is several rungs up from Stony Brook. Yes no NCAA but solid at Wagner and moving URI eventually to Ncaa

Are you conveniently leaving out the 2 years Hurley took URI to the NCAA tournament prior to taking the UCONN job?

Data boy leaving out 2 important rows! Do another v look up!

so isn’t that a knock on us ? The ‘accountability’ deficit ? Pike just doesn’t have it in him. Soft on refs, soft on selfish play, soft soft soft.

You think Hurley would let Simpson miss shot after shot after shot game after game after game at Rutgers or UConn or URI ?

Dude. Illinois is a very good team and they just got ****ing thrashed in the Elite 8. It was praise of their team and how focused and competitive they are. That’s Cam. Very good teams lose in the tourney when they have that one night where they lose focus and intensity. Takes a special team to be that locked in and intense for this long. These guys are dismembering really good teams.

Yes because they happened after we hired Pikiell. What aren’t you understanding here?
Pikes work prior to RU 1 school in Stoney Brook and was embarrassing bad in conference and NIT play.
Hurley prior to U CONN success at 2 schools . Harder to win at URI then Stoney Brook and 2 NCAA tournament appearances

A huge part of the equation. Factored greatly into contract talks re Shaka and soon Archie and will wade

Pikiell was embarrassingly bad in conference play at Stony Brook? He was 109-71. The five years before we hired him he was

14-2
14-2
13-3
12-4
14-2

I refuse to believe these are the serious postings of a serious person.

Comparing the 2 cultures he’s played for these last two years is a criticism of ours, regardless of boatracing their tournaments.

Lots of people here want Pike on the hot seat if next year doesn’t work out the way we hope.

They do, and it’s wrong. Yeah, if it’s a catastrophe like Michigan this year, sure. He’s bought himself a little grace and goodwill even if this season underwhelms. Also think there will be some coaching changes coming after next season with Brandin probably taking a HC position somewhere.

He really must like being abused. He had JWill as the backup 4 in one of his posts.

Anyone watching the Clemson/Alabama game?
Yeah, can't really get into it though. Don't really care about either team one way or the other, and the crowd seems super lame.

Still, it's better than this pointless Hurley debate

You post it if you think it’s relevant.
Dominant regular season who consistently gets bounced. Lower level conference champs are typically walk ins into the NCAA. Oh NIT bounced like a ball. Regular season coach who can’t handle big games. Unfortunately for us he continues on at Rutgers. Scared of the moment and coaches that way

Big games? He beat #1 twice. We’ve beaten like 16 or 17 ranked teams since he’s been here. 4 ranked teams in a row.

What are you even doing?

And we explained to you that he’s only a point guard on defense and that Dylan would be running the offense so his deficiencies would matter less.
Right having a player who doesn’t handle the ball and can’t shoot who you can use to double off on ACE and Dylan is a huge help. I am sure they will love playing 4 on 5

Would this happen to us next year, will people say Pike should be fired? Win the Big Ten, make it to the Elite 8, but give up a 30-0 run. Would be saying why didnt Pike call a timeout, go inside and get fouled, call a pick and roll 3 posessions in a row, something .. almost impossible

Didn’t think so ! Lol
Conference tournament record is a pain to look up because it’s not directly on the Wikipedia page. As far as i can tell he was 14-10 in the conference tournament over his career at Stony Brook and 1-3 in the NIT.

I’m not doing any more free work when you inevitably ask for his record on Wednesdays or in the last five games of the regular season or whatever.

There are legit criticisms of Pikiell, which I have voiced on occasion here and on social media but his NIT losses were to Illinois, Seton Hall and Iowa as an AEC program lol.

Also not sure where you’re getting it from that regular season champs in low major leagues are a shoo-in for tournament.

What about the Houston game in the NCAA ?
The ND game?
The Minn game ?
Big ten tournament play?
Out biggest moments he just freezes up!

Listen you want to build him a statue fine. The level of excuses that are made for this man and the complete overlook of his shortcomings are absolutely mind numbing. You wonder why other schools have a winning culture or stronger programs?? They don’t make excuses

Yeah but none of those things are related to your points about Stony Brook…he blew the Houston game and I tweeted last year about how it was a problem the way RU looked trying to close out games.

I’m not building anyone a statue, I personally think Pikiell is a good, not great high-major coach until proven otherwise…I was just responding to the points you made about AEC Tournament and NIT when he was at Stony Brook.

Would you describe a conference game against a horrendous team as a “big moment” if we had won?

If the “moment size” classification is dependent on the results then a discussion of record in “big moments” becomes meaningless.

It's crazy to me that people don't realize they're arguing with obvious trolls
It’s a Poe’s law thing, but also i usually don’t believe that people who post this much here are pure trolls. Like, they mix trolling into their posting but they are posting their actual opinions about this stuff (probably, imo)

Though i will say some of RUDivision’s recent posting makes me a little more suspicious that he is a pure troll but if you go back to Poe’s law… it’s not really possible to distinguish from really stupid legitimate posting.

Now you could (rightly) make the argument that it’s stupid for me to argue with him in the case where he’s actually this dumb.. and for that i have no comeback lol
