Pole vault story:In the early 70's in the Millrose Garden at the Garden,the meet was running very late.The only event yet to be concluded was the pole vault.Dick Railsback was going for the world indoor record,so the place naturally was very quiet.
As Railsback was attempting to get set,a nearby workman,oblivious to all of this,was pounding away at the track as it needed to be dismantled for the next day's basketball game.Maybe he was told by the foreman to get the job done by midnight to avoid premium pay.Who knows?
In any event,Railsback failed in all three attempts of his vault.These damn unions!

Her season is even more encouraging considering 1) she has more in her (she's cleared 14-10 1/4, which would've been fourth) and 2) she's only a freshman!
I always remembered those guys at Millrose were always itching to start work. Also remember the stench of the dogs whose cages were in the back one year when the dog show was the next day.
