BB Recruiting New 2019 Offer

The staff has extended an offer to 2019 PG Mylik Wilson from Rayville, LA. He's rated as a 3-star by Rivals.

Really, really like Wilson's defense. That probably was the driving factor in this offer.

He stays engaged on, and off, the ball. He has blocked eight shots in seven games and he's 6-foot-2. Wilson has two games in which he blocked three shots. He hasn't shot it well from the perimeter so far this travel season (10-of-56) yet he has taken slightly more than 50 percent of his FGA from beyond the arc.

a good number of those were passing up an open 3.

Issa is not a slasher, he is a shooter. We need volume shooting out of Issa in the 36+% area from 3. He is a willing defender and will make the exra pass. Add an interior move or 2 to keep opponents honest who want to put a 6'2'' guy on him and we have something.

My expectation (sorry to those who are offended) is the removal of freeman (primarily) and sanders (secondarily) will make Issa a better offensive player. I expect/hope he comes out of his shell and stops playing timid.

Good point. Did he automatically defer to the two best offensive players ? With them being gone, maybe he steps up and plays more aggressive.

I'll just say Issa never really got encouragement from most of his teammates. Almost as if he didn't have the respect of the upperclassmen.

Agree with not needing Mulcahy.

The staff found what they need in McConnell. Focus on wings and forwards who have an okay perimeter shot.

Agree. The guard commits we have are as good as Mulcahy.

Also agree with early comments about pure PG. All these kids are combo guards and if they learn to play well together we will be much better off. We need 4 or 5 players that can bring the ball up. Last year we had two.

Remarkable how quickly some have jumped off the Mulcahy bandwagon. Seems a little premature to me.

Yup... When we were in a good spot for him people couldn't praise him enough. Now that things have cooled down he's nothing special, even as he continues to rack up high-major offers.

It says more about the nature of fandom than anything specific to Rutgers. Everybody thinks their 3* guy is the diamond in the rough, and everybody thinks their strength & conditioning coach is gonna make the most out everybody.

I have been consistent, but I don’t have ultra high conviction. I’d need to see him play in a few AAU games.

Can he shoot?

As you get closer to the prime 2019 recruiting period more names emerge and fans get a chance to look at more guys on film. Then you realize there are probably some better options out there at PG other than the guy ranked at 138 with questionable shooting.

He was a local guy so it was very easy for Pikiell to go see him play and for him to attend games at the RAC. The frequency of those visits may have led some to believe that Mulcahy was the Number 1 choice for Pikiell. He may be, but certainly not the only option.

I agree, he was praised on this board by some posters as the best thing since sliced bread.

I don't think people are jumping off the bandwagon. the situation has changed a lot in the last few weeks, which potentially changes the need/desire for mulcahy. Strickland, McConnell, Young and Mulcahy are all potentially good players and i would have been happy with any of them.

I agree. The void will be there that Issa can fill. It’s all up to him.

No one is off on Mulcahy....RU is going to keep recruiting him and others...is the dire need as bad as it was 60 days ago...?? Not at all, we have landed 2 guards since then and those 2 are better than what was here in Souf and Bullock.

It's not out of the question that he still comes to RU, if his play isnt off the charts at PG this spring and summer...he's not Montez Mathis folks, he's a player that I'd like making passes to the others and occasionally scoring as well. But i would not base length of time on how long the player has been recruited to make him look and feel like a high 4* cant miss player....if he blows up this summer, RU will pick up another player elsewhere...

Every recruit has a dream school or situation...and that is OK....I'm focused on what we have and who else we recruit.

I haven't seen Mathis play in person ( and few have I'm sure ) but have seen Mulcahy several times both in HS and AAU.

He's a good player and he is going to go to a good school and hopefully have a nice career.

But at this point in the development of the RU Program I don't want guys who don't shoot the ball well.

There's other places where that isn't an issue because they are stacked with shooters but to me it's critical if the Program is going to take a step forward.

Right now, the pressing need for me isn't Mulcahy - because we've stocked up a bit at guard. Next year when Mulcahy would be coming in, we'll have Baker (Jr), Kiss (Jr), Young (Jr), Mathis (So), and McConnell (So) all vying for time at the guard spots. Meanwhile, we'll have Omoruyi (Sr), Carter (Sr), Doucoure (Jr), Johnson (So) in the post. I think having a strong post player in 2019 has to be the primary focus, otherwise 2020 will be Doucoure/Johnson and freshmen. I think getting another wing is the next highest priority, as we'll have just Harper in 2020 and spill over from the guards.

So, in order of importance in my mind, would be: PF/C, then WF, then PG

For those wondering if the AAU and HS sound familiar, it's the exact program and HS of Corey Sanders out of FLA.....This AAU is also an Adidas sponsored program as well.

I noticed that a few recent offer tweets used a Corey Sanders picture. I think they may have both been Florida kids....another one was AJ Neal.... I'm not sure if he a Florida player.

Good call--Orlando. West Oaks HS. Have heard that name before, but can't recall. Maybe it was the alma mater of an FAU kid some ten years back.

West Oaks Academy, had been under an extended review by the NCAA but that was lifted in the fall. In the past several WOA kids had to go the JuCo route to get qualified.

A.J. Neal is a Florida player. He attends West Oaks Academy where his mom works. His mom is also the Director of the Showtime Ballers AAU program on which A.J. plays.

West Oaks Academy was the last (and I think 6th) high school that Corey Sanders attended.

4 star guard Justin Moore commits to Nova and Mulcahy with a "Everybody has a different journey, more fuel to the fire" tweet right after.

Sounds like Nova passed on him. This can only help our chances.

Corey attended SIX high schools? Reminds me of Carlos Monroe, who Matt Doherty picked up late in Doherty's only year at FAU, 2005-6. Carlos had been to several Philly high schools, and then to Coral Springs, Fla. Finally got through the clearing house, but missed time due to academic problems at least three of his four seasons. But he graduated, and on time. Good kid, dominant when he played. Figured he would be playing somewhere after graduation. Turns out he was Carlos Mugabo, born in Rwanda and he played on the Rwandan FIBA team in 2009. Nothing further surfaced on him as a basketball player, which surprised me.

Could be related....could be something else...dominoes falling with kids always impact other recruits....last year at this time, it was Kansas showing interest in Montez Mathis, the typical fans that are negative about things panic and get annoyed etc....bo way to know how this plays out but thank goodness we landed Mathis....it set the table as the bellcow for the rest of the class to come together.

RU is in a much better spot this summer vs last...it was really critical to get a couple of wins late in season, that helped recruiting....this year may see the same thing with not just Mulcahy but others as well.

If the higher rated 2019 PG's Pikiell offered go elsewhere or are not interested they still have Mulcahy as an option.

Always worry when Harvard gets on kids who are really good academically and Amaker is a good recruiter.

He came within an eyelash I was told of getting Wendall Carter away from Duke.

They have a lot to sell.

No arguing about the education if you think you can play D1 basketball and survive in the classroom. As a basketball player not sure how much I’d be excited about playing for a school that had a gym with a seating capacity of about 1,200.
