sorry Geo its not about selling t shirts or a basketball camp

Coleman Hawkins is making $2 million at Kansas State to mail it in and underperform for a 7-7 Kansas State team that is going nowhere and will finish near the bottom of the Big 12 standings. Normally he would have made peanuts in the G League. Now marginal NBA players are duping college programs to pay them huge amounts

Great Osobor is making $2 million at Washington to average 9.8 points for a 10-6 team that is on everyones list to miss the Big 10 tournament

Jonnel Davis is making over $1 million at Arkansas to average under 10 ppg half of the previous year for a Arkansas team that will likely straddle the bubble under Calipari

Someone not Rutgers is paying Dylan/Ace $1.8/.1.6 million to play at 8-8 Rutgers and likely miss the Big 10 tournament

AJ Dybantsa will make $4 million to attend BYU next year

not basketball but https://www.wfla.com/news/florida/6...l-players-sue-coach-over-failed-nil-payments/

And we all just play pretend and say ooh this was happening before, now its just out in the open..haha yeah right

I agree with all of this. I do think, in the beginning, it was supposed to be about t shirts and BB camps. It's morphed into the current state and the toothpaste ain't gettin' back in the tube.

If we have a totally new roster each year I don't see me sticking around. These teams feel less and less connected to the university.

It's the portal that's the issue moreso than NIL. But I don't see that open door closing at this point. Not when these kids can just sue for whatever move they want.

Yea definitely a shell of what it used to be. Dudes just floating from team to team every few months chasing dollars.

At some point , does / will the money stop / dry up ?

Call it Donor / Sponsor Fatigue !
It’s been going on for decades in football and that’s where the big money is. No reason to believe it can’t go on for decades more. The only mitigating factor might be if the fans and viewership disappear. If that happens they will need to figure out some things.

LOL this is what I feel to be a huge misconception.

The majority of players in D1 hoops are not getting paid substantial money. The very small minority of players are getting paid 500,000$. plus.

The majority of players have a stipend, and maybe a marketing deal worth a small amount, and possibly a very small amount of money. Most are not receiving of NIL.

I’m finding it very hard to imagine that I’m going to be interested in college sports for much longer. NIL has killed everything that was great about it.
Already there. I stopped watching most Pro-Sports years ago. NFL and Hockey Playoffs I can still enjoy. Gave up on the NBA a decade ago. Watch zero of it. Pretty much out on baseball too.

My attention to non-Rutgers watching for NCAA Football and Basketball must be down 80%. I completely forgot Rutgers was playing last night and took the wife out to dinner. (good move on both sides of that decision!).

There are better things to do with my time and my money if this is the model going forward. I would be thrilled to see that semi-pro super "college" league come to fruition and teams like RU and all the others like us return to the regional alignments and more traditional student-athlete participation. And I'm talking about the Cuse/Pitt/Va Tech/BC/Maryland/West Virginia etc alignment and not Colgate and Lehigh , etc. .. call it the New 1A. Sign me up.

I don’t know about moreso, but you make a great point. IF there can be some sensible controls applied to NIL, the portal and unfettered free agency is more of a blight and detracts more from the college fan experience (IMO).

Just one small example, but Senior Night was always a special night to honor your 3-4 year players. Now it’s for walk-ons and student managers. Reinstate the one-year sit requirement, with the exception if the coach leaves.

Before last nights game I pulled the plug on my nil contributions. I just sat back and said why I am doing this? These guys aren’t students for the most part as you say they are professionals. Why am I paying professionals. Its dumb. And it’s not fun. I am also dropping my tickets this year. Seeing a roster turn over every year. Seeing teams trot 24 year old guys into the rac. This isn’t college athletics. I don’t know what it is but it sucks.

No incentive for the kids to play. They got their money. Schools can't trade them. Do they even go to class. What happened to the days of kids having to sit out if they didn't pass classes or didn't attend classes. They run the asylum now. no one knows who will be back next year. Coaches can't recruit because they don't know either. That's why I don't follow pro sports. College was pure. They played for the school not themselves.

Welcome friend!

The second I saw Geo look into a streaming camera and snicker while he said that a scholarship was worthless was when I got to where you are.

I was hoping this season we could make a great enough run that I could kind of care less as the NIL issues worsened. I’m dead serious- when will we get a guy like Oskar again? Even if he was a mediocre player he stuck around the program and he means more to it to me than a guy like Acuff, who is talented and a nice kid, but gone after this year.

How much are we paying J Will

I don’t have a real issue with NIL, you can love Rutgers and still make money there as a teacher or a coach, or even in an undergraduate context as a tutor or something. It’s the unregulated transfer portal and constant turnover that has made the sport really farcical right now, and I would agree football is a much more compelling watch because there isn’t quite as much turnover.

Do you want Jalen Miller, Antonio Chol, Jaden Jones and Woolf back too?

I agree, at the beginning it made sense because the NCAA rules were ridiculous - the infamous you can give a recruit a bagel but cant buy him cream cheese. However, the incompetent NCAA, with the help of the supreme court, has since gone from one extreme to the other, which is how we got to this lawless land, which hurts almost everyone invovled in the long run. Money isnt everything

Chol would’ve been better than martini and would have known the system. Wolf we could’ve used with the extra scholarship spot- again, he knew the system. Miller wasn’t far off from J Mike and if he stayed maybe he’d be a more experienced version. Jaden jones could’ve developed with four years but his camp clearly had no idea what they were doing

Dammit HC Pike.
He really screwed up when my argument "with no transfers you want take back the bad players too - not just the good."

He's making us long for the Jaden Jones and Jalen Miller days.

Are those guys worth the money? You can’t deny someone their worth. Unless you live in Russia.

I hate the system as now implemented, and I don't blame the players. If someone wants to pay me $1mm to mow their lawn this year, I'm mowing their lawn.
Yeah, I don’t get the player hate. The system sucks but the players are a valuable commodity. They need to get paid one way or another. It was very un-American and non-Capitalist to deny them in the beginning.
