OC Wish List

Interesting that Ole Miss took a chance on him but him go to UNC. Was there a coaching change at Ole Miss. Because UNC is not going to out money a SEC school.
He was hired by Matt Luke, one of those internal promotions by the school because of support from the players. It was after the whole Hugh Freeze incident. He did a solid job there with offenses ranked in the top 20s and scoring offense in the 30s. His offenses could have trouble in the redzone though. I think that's where being around a coach like Fickell might help him improve on his "physicality quotient" so to speak. It can help in the redzone and against stronger teams.

edit: Just to be clear Longo was let go by Luke (wasn't a voluntary move) and replaced by RichRod and Luke got fired that next year, his 3rd

Why is a 20 year track record taking a chance? You must have done some research on Longo to make your initial post.
“The shiny new toy was a Longo type hire. I don’t get your argument. Gleeson is a NJ guy from a high power offense team.”

You have been dismissive of his resume with your comments. Keep reading about him I think you will be impressed.

Was not on board with the Gleeson hire. Two years as OC at Princeton with some solid offenses. But one year at P5 under a HC who was more than likely calling the plays and running the offense (that may be questionable, however, as articles say Gundy gave up play calling in 2015, but who knows about that). And in that 2019 season, Oklahoma State was third from last in passing yards and middle of the pack in total offense, taking a step back from the previous year before he arrived.

But these stats can be twisted different ways to achieve a different narrative: "averaging 32.6 points per game. That mark ranked 26th nationally and Gleeson’s offense also finished 17th in the country in rushing yards per game, racking up 229.6 yards per contest."

Regardless of stats, one year of P5 experience was light for the RU OC job.

I don't think Gundy was calling plays. In the past, I've seen those article as well and I don't see him on the sidelines of games with any playsheet in his hand. Just like Dykes and Garrett Riley. If they're calling plays you'll see it like Lincoln Riley, Jimbo Fisher, Jeff Brohm, Steve Sarkisian, Leach etc.. Gundy is an offensive coach though and that's one reason I say sometimes it can be motivation to get out of the shadow of the offensive HC and prove it on your own.

If you want so say it was only a year in the P5, I can understand that but I was okay with it. Ideally, for me it's less about the P5 (although that would be helpful) and more about the total amount of experience as coordinator be it P5, G5, FCS. I'd like to see about 5 years combined as coordinator personally but beggars can't be choosers.

I’m dismissive but don’t think he was a sure thing at the time. His resume wasn’t that impressive before he got his chance at Ole Miss. I think I understand how he got that shot. But all the credit to him for making the most of it and proved himself. I also think we all were hoping Gleeson was going to be that guy but just didn’t translate.

Agreed about the no sure thing. That’s why my initial post said shiny new toy. I would rather take my chances on someone that has 20 year track record and 15 years of play calling experience over someone that had 2-3 years.

I think that's the bigger key....15 years OC vs 3, the level it's at doesn't matter as much to me. Lincoln was never an OC on the P5 before he went to OU. He was OC 5 years at ECU. Mike Leach was never an OC at the P5 before UK and was there just 2 years before OU and then HC at TT. There have been others that might be just a qb coach or PGC that I'd be okay with giving a shot too if they've been around highly productive offensive coaches for some years. In the end, you never know for sure just like with HCs. If it works great and if not you try again.

Doesn't anyone find it concerning that history shows it won't matter which OC comes here. He did go through quite a few OCs before Gleeson the first go around with the same problems kept occurring despite the changes.

2001 Passing 9Tds, 21Ints
2002 Passing 12Tds, 23Ints
2003 Passing 16Tds, 19Ints
2004 Passing 21Tds, 20Ints
2005 Passing 20Tds, 19Ints
2006 Passing 12Tds, 13Ints
2007 Passing 21TDs, 13Ints
2008 Passing 26Tds, 15Ints
2009 Passing 15TDs, 10Ints
2010 Passing 16TDs, 10Ints
2011 Passing 21TDs, 16Ints
2020 Passing 14TDs, 9ints
2021 Passing 9TDs, 10 Ints
2022 Passing 11TDs, 14 Ints
14 years Passing 223TD, 212Ints

None of those years showed greatness in the passing offense, even in the 11-2 year of 2006.

I'm not sure how much that factors into it, maybe for some but I don't know about most. Head coaches leave for new jobs before bowls and coordinators do as well. Satterfield left Louisville for Cincy and they're playing each other at the Wasabi Fenway Bowl lol.

Wonder we start getting the "HC Schiano had no plan" threads like we did for AD Hobbs when a HC wasn't immediately hired.

https://rutgers.forums.rivals.com/threads/hobbs-had-no-plan.176587/
Colorado has already hired an OC and DC also have multiple coaches with HC. May also bring W. Taggert on board. If we don’t hire an OC soon, you will begin to ask the question if they want to come here and work with GS, can be a career. Would Gleason make the same choice if he had to do it over again.

It doesn’t matter if they want to come they would be here. The longer u wait the more you lose out on the opportunity to bring in a quality guy. Don’t know how you can recruit without knowing who you will be playing for on offense

This hire better be good. A lot of MO is riding on this.

How many is many ? There are probably very few current P5 OCs (like Gleeson was) who would come here, lateral move at best. And position coaches would leave their teams for the P5 OC job.

This leaves G5 OCs in bowl games. They would probably leave before the games too.

Reading the tea leaves, I don’t think theres much interest in the job among people who are qualified and proven recruiters. They all have better options than to work for a bullheaded coach who hinders offense.

My prediction: Nunzio keeps the job.

If you think 20 years experience vs 3 is similar sizzle then I don’t know what to say.
Experience at different levels are not the same. To be clear, I’m not saying it’s the same situation now but when Ole Miss hire him.

Okay that’s not what you said at the start. But my experience (finance) has been I would rather hire someone with a track record of success, 10-15 years (longo), at multiple stops than someone that was leaving a bulge bracket analyst program 1-3 years (gleeson). Especially in a rebuilding situation where you are trying to change the culture.

In my defense, I was quoting wiki that only showed 2 years of P5 experience. My experience is that if someone has that much experience and never got the look = red flags. I’m also in finance.

I think if someone doesn’t get the shot with that much experience it’s the opposite of your “shiny new toy” analogy. There’s a bias from ADs and likely HCs too against guys who do well at the lower levels. They toil around there waiting for their shot and often it never comes or if it does, it’s a very difficult job they get. The shiny new toy will get a shot vs the longer track record on the lower level. There are good coaches down there like Liepold or Clawson or DeBoer or Klieman who don’t get opportunities but it doesn’t mean there are any red flags.

Yep agree red flag if you don’t get increasing responsibilities. But an OC is equivalent of a division head. It’s not like he was a low level back office lifer. He was at the top of the food chain just not at a bulge bracket firm.

I got a question for you. How many OC job openings has Gleeson been mentioned as a candidate? These hires often are not out in the open, but a Twitter search reveals nothing about him since he was fired. Maybe that means nothing. But you would think a guy with such a great resume would be given a shot somewhere else. Maybe someone will give him that shot.

Or he has very young kids and is getting paid 700k to get to be a dad for a bit and then see what’s next. If so good for him.

His name will come up for a lower tier. We gave him his shot and he failed. He needs to rebuild.

IDK if I agree, and that's OK.
Anybody can look like a superstar at Oklahoma State and top tier Big 12 teams (or top tier teams in any conference). A coach's and coordinator's mettle is tested at mid-level to lower level programs competing against top dogs.

You are killing it lately, man.
Do you have a top 3 for OC? It can include guys like Longo who have been hired elsewhere.

The key to a good troll post is anticipate the response and preempt it with their own prior actions.
For example - just saying:
"WTF?? Why is Schiano waiting so long? It's been 596 days and he still hasn't hired anyone!! Schiano sucks and nobody wants to work for him!"

That triggers the "Only Schiano" people to respond with:
"What did you except? We were never hiring anyone before the season ending. This takes time. You just hate HC Schiano!!"

By quoting the threads that said the except same thing about AD Hobbs (because he didn't immediately hire HC Schiano like they wanted) it cuts off their "hater!" response.

It's an art more than a science.

Just a guess. I assume length of time means that some have said no thanks, or gotten an offer and gone back to their current school and gotten a retention raise. Agree that many OCs would not to work for GS or take over this division 2 offense. I cannot under any circumstances believe Nunzio would get this gig. If he does, OMG.
