Oden Redshirt Burned

He's a big time D1 athlete who had a solid offer list. Oden will be fine even as a freshman. He's the best QB on the roster for this O.

Yep, been saying that for awhile and hoping we'd see him. He was electric running the ball - just imagine how tough it can be on the defense when we have him throwing too. You don't burn a guy's redshirt for the hell of it - excited to see more.

Drew was very glowing about Gio in the post game. Let's not jump the gun. He also said Tylin needs work in passing ability.

First step, would be seeing Gio start. He's got wheels and he seems to have that 'it' factor. Here's hoping they consider him for New Mexico, so he can get a game under his belt before B1G play begins.

Oden will be destroyed in B1G play. He weights barely 180 lbs and the wear and tear of constant hits may hurt more than help him. I thought Gio should have seen those minutes in the second half rather than be pulled so quick.

Who cares if it's burned, that tells me at least one of the two scenarios;
1. Ash plans to use him more this year
2. Ash is confident he can recruit qb's that fit his system, so burning a redshirt is not in his mindset

Either way I like his confidence and coaching style overall

have no problem with the redshirt being burned. Its about the future and Laviano isnt it. He is just the placeholder til one of the 3 other guys can develop and coaching staff gains confidence in someone else

well, he didn't throw a pass - so, who knows...

but, the athleticism was night and day........ Can't wait until we have a true pass/run threat at QB (whether Oden or someone else)..... it will be so exciting to watch......

Ash needs to sort out who can play and who can't right now who redshirts is the least of his problems. This staff has shown a willingness to play anybody they think can help win games, Oden showed the ability to run the spread smoothly, with vision, and without hesitation, at least the running side of it. Hopefully he will also be able to add some of the passing components as well as the season moves on. whether you like Laviano or not right now he is a "fish out water " running the spread.

You think Lewis as a true freshman is going to beat out Laviano, Gio, and Oden?
Yes its possible, im sure we want to get the right people on the field to get this spread going. Not to mention our current crop of qbs have alot of work to do.

If this offense is being run properly, you are always going to need more than 1 qb.

Agreed

Ideally you are going to want at least 3 QBs on the roster that can both run and pass well and move the offense down the field because it is very likely that at least one or even 2 of them will be injured during the season. This idea of having and playing only one QB regardless of injury (see even 2007 where this occurred with Mike Teel) is a thing of the past.

We need to be more like the old Cincinnati teams under Dantonio or Kelley where they can just shuffle QBs in and out 6 deep without much of a decline in offensive production. That's the beauty of the spread offense.

Forget the medical redshirt thing. Pray he doesn't get hurt. His redshirt is "burnt" only if he doesn't play anymore. That, to me, is unrealistic. It is clear that the HC and the OC realize he is the only one who can run this offense and he will be the QB at some point this year. As I see it, Allen and Rettig are as good as done. Gio and Tylin will start getting more reps and as CL continues to put the ball in harms way, and we all know he will, his leash will get shorter and the QB change will be made. It would be great of we can win some games as the change is made but I don't see that opportunity availing itself until the second half of the schedule

Was there any mention of Rettig today?
Not lately.Staff seems to feel that we are ok ,as is.Rettig is buried, but I believe we will have to throw the ball to succeed in the BIG.We have no lights out runner(save Grant). With Laviano we will likely see an instant replay of last year.He is still antsy in the pocket and inaccurate.Who knows about Gio.(save poor spring game throwing).Allen?Oden? We are pretty sure Rettig has throwing ability.I guess we will find out soon,if this offense ,with these players has any chance to succeed.

This was genius to play Oden today.

It will help with recruiting QBs now knowing that Oden only has 3 more years of eligibility left.
Plus, honestly, I may even trust the true frosh over Laviano today.

Chris may be a great kid but he's not a B1G QB.

i couldn't catch the game live and don't have BTN....can anyone link me to a clip of the 30 yard run Oden had? can't find it anywhere.

Why is Allen done? I thought he wa a pread QB?

we need a spread QB not a pread QB. Preferable one that can both pass and run well. Zach Allen doesn't do both well. Might as well take this season to invest in the future than to invest in retreads that will be 1 and done.

No. His redshirt is burnt. All it takes is one play.

The exception to this rule is the medical hardship waiver, colloquially known as the medical redshirt. That requires a season-ending injury which must occur when the player has appeared in three games or less, none of which can be in the second half of the season. Documented evidence of the injury must be submitted to the NCAA for their approval.

He wasn't disagreeing with the rule. He was suggesting that if Oden plays more his RS isn't "burnt", he's just a kid who contributed as a true frosh.

yes, I was mistaken, it was burned. I was thinking medical redshirt.

At least this gives us hope that CL will not be the QB no matter what. Also the staff saw what we all saw and are already thinking about making some changes as needed.

Our schedule has 5 built in loses, and bad loses at that. We can't afford to lose any game that we are suppose to win or have a good shot at winning. We also must give ourselves at least a chance to win some of the other 3 games in which the teams are not insanely better than us.

It was obvious watching Laviano that he just isn't comfortable running the ball , doesn't like getting hit . and would rather sit in the pocket and throw. In other words, he's just not a good fit with this offense. When Oden came in you can see what a dimension he adds with his ability to run. I say play the kid if he's physically able to withstand the beating he's likely to get. Too bad we didn't see him throw the ball in order to evaluate his arm....

big Picture;
this is a rebuild year..you HAVE to get Oden some snaps. The kid,(along with hopefully Lewis) are the future at QB here at Rutgers.yes Tylin needs to put some Coach Parker Weight and muscle on his frame, but there is no reason not to let him get some game action in blowout games either up,or down. Also earth to everyone else,in college football there is no reason NOT to play two qbs in games if it works. See Texas, see Ohio State.

Oden playing yesterday shows me that this staff has an urgency to compete NOW. Play the players that can help you win today, and next week and next month. Play talented freshman. Find out what you have and build some needed depth. Recruit HS talent, JUCO talent and talented transfers. I like the urgency.

Everyone should view Drew Meringer's post game comments.

That was my point, thank you for explaining it to him.

Again, thank you for explaining my point. I thought I had made it clear.

I was extremely impressed with Oden's vision and patience. I expected good speed but I didn't expect the way he seemed to see the field, wait for a block and go. Lots of times a young player, RB or QB, will just run up the back of their blockers.
Kids with a strong basketball backgrounds actually use their brains when they run. Ray Rice, Braxton Miller and Michael Crabtree for example.
