While at Wildwood this week, there was an obnoxious group of Penn St fans with Penn St tents, shirts, everything you could think of on the beach and on their car parked at the hotel across from ours. I put one of my extra Block R magnets on the back of their lift gate, but wasn't around to see what type of reaction it had. Should this become something we as Rutgers fans do to every Penn St car we see, kind of letting them know "We are Rutgers" and we will be getting under their skin for a long time, both, on and off the field?

You mean as opposed to, say, running them off the road or shooting out their tires? I guess. I could go either way on it.

I think this is a pretty damn fun idea. I`m purchasing a dozen magnets next time I`m at Scarlet Fever.

Penn St has done a good job of creating a brand and pride in their school. Rutgers needs to look to get to this level at some point in the future.

Part of their success is from NJ families who had extra means and wanted to send their kids away to school where Rutgers was just too close geographically.

You also have a lot of Pennsylvania transplants in NJ because of jobs.

You also have better branding in PA vs NJ. A lot of PA residents that didn't attend PSU feel like PSU is their home school while in NJ we have the opposite affect where many non-RU alum and residents will tend to go with more brand name traditional programs.

I hate to say it but you need to win. Winning can be in sports or in academia. In hoops and gridiron we ned to win against the traditional schools. In academics we need to get to the top of the rankings in all the ratings services.

For sports that may mean not to worry about APR / GSA and graduation rates more than winning.
For academics you need to move up the rankings. It is tough for the average person who didn't attend Rutgers to take immense pride in the state school when it ranks behind the others in both academics and sports. Penn St, Syracuse, and UConn are all ranked well ahead of RU.

Here are some similar schools ranks:
29- Michigan
30- UVA
42- Illinois
47 - Wisconsin
48 - Penn St
48 - Florida
48 - Miami
53 - Texas
54 - Ohio St
58 - Syracuse
58 - UConn
62 - Clemson
62 - Maryland
62 - Pitt
70 - Rutgers
71 - Minnesota
71 - Va Tech
76 - Indiana

76 - Delaware

LOL. I wanted to, but never got around to, do the same thing with gay flag stickers back in HS.

Indcidentally - given the usual ties in US News- none of those schools except PSU is really WELL ahead. They are probably 2 (Pitt, MD) or 3 (UConn, Syracuse) points ahead.

I have a friend who us a big Wake Forest Fan. Whenever I see him chances are we are going to a Wake football or BB game or a Rutgers game. I never forget to bring magnets so he can rep the R wherever his car goes. Gets him every time.

Inspired by getting my R magnet stolen too often, I have a humane "trap & release" program for NJ cars that display Penn State logos. Usually I stick them onto the Walt Whitman bridge as I'm crossing, but I think I'll take my current group and hand them out in Happy Valley in September to people driving cars with PA plates.

There was a big group of Temple fans on my beach in Wildwood this week. A flag, tent, shirts, the whole works. WTF is going on in this world?????

A while back I worked the wedding of two PSU grads. There were a number their PSU grad friends there also. Upon returning to my car after the reception, I found that my Block R was removed from the lift gate. Not making any accusations but I think we both contributed something to the same fan base.

I went to a game in College Station one year when NU played A&M. I parked in an A&M lot and my license plates were Huskers1 so you could tell I was an NU fan. When I got back after the game my vehicle had no less than 1000 little stickers the size of a quarter that said "gig'em" on them. The entire vehicle was covered. I just sort of stared at it for a minute and then smiled and left.

Bingo! Anyone who makes that negative of a post about RU has to be questioned - and even though we are behind those schools in USNWR, the difference between 48, 58, and 70 is really small, i.e., we're not "well behind" PSU/Cuse/UConn - and we're ahead in some other rankings. Point is all of those schools are much to way better than most, but not quite elite, which is fine.

Now this is the way it should be done.

As long as the southern 40% of New Jersey gets their news out of Philadelphia
and doesn't demand some Rutgers coverage the deck is stacked against us.

I snuck a block R on the back of my friend's car one day. He went grocery shopping and when he came out he said he couldn't find his car. He said he saw a car that looked like his but it wasn't because he saw the block R on it. Finally he figured it out. To his credit he thought it was very funny.

Weekend before last on the Wildwood Crest beach, saw both Roll Tide Flag and University of South Carolina Flag. There were tailgate flags and could be seen flying high for blocks on the beach. I was dying to yell " Yay, Big Ten", but after surveying the crowd, decided against it.
