Dave White is spot on. He echoes what many of us feel as Rutgers fans. For me it was pretty insulting what Eddie said yesterday, a virtual FU to the fanbase that has supported this dreck for years. Its interesting to note that Eddie's response came just from a question about getting one conference win...WOW. Its quite apparent that job security may becoming an issue.

why the need to call him a "dreck"?

dreck refers to years and years of basketball incompetence. Eddie's 3 years are a part of it but are the worst 3 years since Littlepage and probably worse than them. So Fred, Craig, Uncle Bob, Tim, Kevin, Fred Jr, Julie and Eddie are all to blame in some way. Note I wouldn't include Gary Waters in this nonsense that's gone on.

definition of dreck---
noun, Slang.
1.
excrement; dung.
2.
worthless trash; junk------your choice of words ,as usual from someone that professes never to call names, is completely inappropriate and unfair

Instead of asking suffering fans for patience, how about channeling that energy into producing a competitive team?

It seems you think that the word "dreck" was aimed at EJ... "dreck" is usually not a descriptor of a person. I took it as "the state of Rutgers basketball has been dreck for years" - which I believe was the spirit in which it was intended. Would you have preferred the use of the word "crap", which means essentially the same thing?

I really don't understand the Danny Hurley love at all and the seven year contract demand. (No better at all then predecessor Jim Baron). If you are willing to give that to Danny you can't call for Eddie's head in the middle of year three. It was right to walk away. Current situation is also why you do not give ridiculous long term contracts.

G, yeah, that's a tough call. But that's why it's better to have an AD to make that call, and a good one. When we hired EJ, we had no AD. We'll see what happens now with Hobbs. In my opinion, RU's problem has not been firing too many coaches. That's the symptom. The problem has been not hiring the right ones.

What do you think the team would look like if he signed here.

Way better than this

I wonder if Mods will begin to ban people discussing this topic soon. It could be deserved.

um ban for what. There are articles all over the place about yesterday. Politi just wrote a new one questioning Jordan losing his mind

0-33 vs rpi 250, 26 game Big 10 losing streak, 19 losses by 20 or more in 88 games. Best win in over a year is FDU. What are we being banned for exactly...there are no topic headlines with Jordan must be fired all over the board. Its people discussing the issue and job status is clearly an issue when you have lost as much as he has

Is that the standard? And at seven years? No thank you. At least Bobby took a Buffalo team to the Big Dance.

Well-written and spot on. Makes no sense for EJ to alienate the last 22 season ticketholders, of which I am one. He could really be feeling the pressure and knows he is going to get fired or knows he is coming back so he can say whatever he wants. At this point, even if he wins 2 B1G games- does it really matter?

As the article says, I just am looking for fun. Iowa and Illinois games were at least "fun to be at" despite losing. That is how low the program has become... I guess we all just need to be patient while Eddie buries this program even deeper.

ru66 is telling it like it is.

Great poster. bac is losing his cool as expected.

The Buffalo program Bobby took over wasn't all that bad in Witherspoon's last couple of years
2008–09 Buffalo 21–12 11–5 T–1st CBI First Round
2009–10 Buffalo 18–12 9–7 T–3rd
2010–11 Buffalo 20–13 8-8 T-5th CIT Quarterfinals
2011–12 Buffalo 19–9 12-4 2nd CIT Second Round
2012–13 Buffalo 14-20 7-9 8th

It would be wonderful if the Rutgers Athletics Dept gifted one year of tickets and parking to every season ticket buyer who has been buying for more than 10 years. It would be a generous nod acknowledging the fan's commitment to supporting the program. These people are patrons of the program. It has amazed me over the years, that these ambassadors for Rutgers hoops, haven't even been sent free tickets to top-flight games that would allow them to invite friends to the games and share their enthusiasm and support of the team. Penny-wise, dollar foolish, and a tacit thumb of the nose to the loyal ones.

Eddie is upset because he knows his job is secure from the AD but fans are trying to sabotage the team. He worked hard to get this travesty of a program an upgrade in talent and miraculously pulled that off with his most recent two classes which he had no bsiness doing and now a few poor people on a message board or with a blog are trying to take his team and give his progress to someone else.

Understandable that he's "upset".

Oof. Your neck ok? That's some spin you just took there. Twisted yourself in knots.

Two realistic candidates: Lonergan and Masiello.

Upgrade in talent is meaningless when you lose as many games as he does. More than Hill and Rice in a conference as good as the Big Ten.

The talent hasn't been able to play in case you noticed there have been a few injuries.... :/

Got to let this one breath

Unfair comments from Eddie, whether you support him or not. Fans need to be more understanding and patient? The remaining season ticket holders should be awarded honorary PhDs for the patience they have shown. And yes, I think we do know the "types of players and teams" we are going up against in this conference; it's not like Rutgers made the leap from the MEAC - we watched them play some of the best competition in the nation in the Big East.

Steve Politi has fallen on his head, because his article today was not only spot on regarding EJ criticizing fans (he believes totally misplaced and wrong on EJ to misread the "patience" of long suffering fans like most of us here) but was a coherent and cogent piece that makes sense. Anyone who knows even a little bit about BB knows that EJ is NOT a college BB coach. He recruits poorly. He and his staff do not teach basic fundamental BB like defense (moving one's feet); going over screens instead of underneath them; blocking out; passing lanes; etc. The aforementioned missteps is not a coach who believes these kids should know all about that stuff coming out of HS. But rather a coach who shows time and time again he is incapable of being thorough. Mike Rice may have been over the top, but he was thorough. His kids competed.

Politi, and I can't stand the guy, was spot on in his article today. But only Hobbs knows what he's going to do. If I had a vote I would NOT extend EJ (that would be the same mistake we've had going on here for the last 25 years) and I would look to pay the money (yes we have it) and bring in a proven college BB coach like a Sendek who knows how to recruit, coach college kids and compete day in and day out. I have seen enough of the EJ experiment. The experiment has failed. I love EJ and followed his career from the 70's up through his time with the Lakers. He is NOT a very good college BB coach. We both need to move on.

Eddie used a poor choice of words, no doubt, by referring to "patience" when discussing fans of Rutgers basketball. I have been a Rutgers fan since the 1980s, and have had season tix for 20 years. I feel everyone's pain, and I too rankle when I hear our coach implore more patience.

That said, just because we have a right -- based on 25 years of futility and scandal -- to be IMPATIENT with the OVERALL progress of the program, doesn't mean that "patience" isn't warranted THIS YEAR, with all of the injuries. Yes, we struggled early on even with basically a full roster (except Doorson), but that was before Sanders and Laurent got their sea legs, and before Grier came out of his shell.

But then the injuries really struck.

Down goes Freeman, who up to that point was a real post scorer.

Down goes Diallo, who was at least a big body who could be counted on to grab rebounds and defend post players.

Down goes Laurent for 4 critical games. And we're left with Foreman and a severely-hobbled Lewis as our sole bigs (and I don't really consider Foreman a true post player).

After Laurent returned, and now that Sanders, Laurent, and Grier are fully integrated into the offense, I like what I see out of the players who are actually on the court, as they seem to be giving their all for 40 minutes despite being overmatched physically every game. But now it's just a hopeless situation in the Big Ten without 3 of our top 4 bigs. If those injuries had not occurred, we would have had Lewis, Doorson, Diallo, and Freeman manning our front court, allowing Sanders, Laurent, Grier and a resurgent Mike Williams to focus on the wing, instead of Williams, Grier and Laurent having to play at the 4 (and 5) spots at times.

We are three years removed from a horrible scandal that left the cupboard almost entirely bare. Eddie was finally getting his own players into the rotation, and they were developing, but any progress was completely derailed by the injuries. How anybody can expect more than a couple of Big Ten wins under these circumstances is beyond me.

Don't get me wrong -- there are certainly red flags that cause me a lot of concern about Eddie's coaching abilities, e.g., lack of 3-pt. defense, poor rebounding, etc., which goes to fundamentals. I share all of your concerns about these things, and if we were 6-19 (0-11) WITHOUT the injuries, I would be fully in agreement that Eddie should be on the hot seat.

But the injuries make it IMPOSSIBLE to truly evaluate this season, because we have multiple guys playing out of position, and you can't evaluate a defense (or offense for that matter) that has only one legitimate post player who is severely limited by chronic knee injuries. I see signs of progress with Sanders, Laurent, and Williams, and if Freeman gets back, that gives us a decent core of players to combine with the other players coming back (hopefully healthy) and the incoming recruiting class (especially Thiam).

Eddie shouldn't have said what he said, no doubt. We don't need to be TOLD to have patience. But he's actually RIGHT that, THIS YEAR, under THESE CIRCUMSTANCES, patience is warranted, despite the past 25 years.
