Using middle, ring, and pinky fingers is the way many referees signal a 3 point attempt and 3 pt made shot, so players do it that way too. It's been that way for quite a while. (The video is from 12 years ago.)

The only 3 point shots I saw were in the ABA and don't remember seeing too many games to remember the ref's signal for a 3 pointer.
