OSU fans calling for Holtmann's head

This gem is great 🤣

"I’m a Holtman defender and I’m done. I’ve officially run out out of excuses. He’s a likable guy, or at least he was, but now, I don’t know what it is but I just want to punch him in the face. I can’t wait until we play Michigan, not because I think we will win (Michigan found a way to lose their game tonight also) but because there’s a decent chance that Juwan will punch him"

Well I did learn something in that thread. OSU has a much richer history in bball than I thought...

"They e appeared in 11 Final Fours which is good for 6th most all-time behind the blue bloods of college basketball (UNC, UCLA, UK, Duke, Kansas).

I think they’ve still got the 2nd most B1G regular season and tournament titles with 22 and 5 respectively. They’ve only got the one national title, but they’ve played for it all 4 times"

Holtmann’s vest is pretty ridiculous looking. Might be part of why that dude wants to clock him in the face.

OSU won in 1960…where the Final Four featured the only 3-time BigTen Player of the year, Jerry Lucas of OSU…Cincinnati’s Big O … and defending NCAA champion, Cal, who had star, Darrall Imhoff. Cal knocked out Cincinnati in the national semi-final in both ‘59 and ‘60 despite monster games from three-time national POY Robertson (and of course he only played three seasons).

Early 60's tOSU was a powerhouse. They had John Havilcek, Jerry Lucas, Larry Siegfried and a guy off the bench named Bob Knight on those teams.

I remember Imhoff on the Lakers as Wilt's back up.
Imhoff and the Knicks got torched by Wilt in Hershey PA in 1962 (Wilt wound up making 28 free throws that night on his way to 100 as the hack-a-Wilt strategy didn’t work). Some unsubstantiated rumors have it that some really tall kids were born later that year in Hershey. Funny that Wilt was only the third pick in the ‘59 NBA Draft.🤦‍♂️
Looks like I’ve definitely “rabbit holed” tonight.

Many consider the 1960 USA Olympic team second only to the ‘92 dream team. Jerry West, Lucas and Robertson were damn good players…and would have been in any era. Interesting that US hockey also won gold in ‘60…the one and only time the US won gold in both sports in the same year…and it will never happen again.

Thought that was odd so I looked it up. According to Basketball Reference Wilt went #1 followed by Bob Ferry (Danny's dad) and Bob Boozer.

Look closely…they have a rank column (not sure what that is based on) before the pick column. Bob Boozer went first.

I see that. I looked into it further. In 1959 the NBA still had "territorial picks". This is where teams could claim players due to their popularity in the area in an attempt to boost attendance. Wilt went to the Warriors because he was from Philly and Ferry went to the Hawks because he played at St. Louis U. Boozer then went #1 in the regular draft only because Wilt and Ferry had already been selected.
Here's the Wiki page on this.

Interesting that the last year they did this the Knicks chose Bill Bradley as a territorial pick.

Thanks… I wasn’t born until the late 60’s. Interesting that Philly won their argument that the location of Kansas didn’t matter. SportsRefererence should at least refine their Excel spreadsheet.

Tall kids may have been conceived that night. If they were born, then Wilt was truly special.

You don't have to go back to Lucas and Havlicek to find OSU hoops success. Thad Matta went to two Final Fours in the '00s and made another Elite Eight. Matta won or tied for the B1G regular season title five times in his thirteen seasons at OSU.

Back to the original point of this thread, I’ve always felt like Holtmann was one of the better coaches in the B1G. He recruits really well and his teams are usually in the top 25.

That said, for a pampered fan base like the Buckeyes have, you could see that they might be frustrated with OSU not achieving elite status. And now that they’ve lost three in a row — including to bottom feeder Minnesota — I guess it makes sense that they’d be calling for his head.

Wait until about 4:15 p.m. today though. By then, they will have lost 4 in a row…
