The very first episode of NBC's Saturday Night (the Live part came later in time) is airing at 11:30 pm tonight, February 15. George Carlin was the host and the first musical guests were Billy Preston and Janis Ian. Air date: October 11, 1975.

Tonight from 8p-11p SNL will do a special on all the music that has been on since the start.

From faint memory I watched the first show I was not laughing. However, that changed within a month and a half. At Rutgers, the Rusty Screw Pub cleared out at 11:30 pm on Saturday nights when students went to the closest TV set to catch the show... it was that popular.

Sunday there will be a three hour 50th anniversary special broadcast starting at 8pm.

George Carlin is missed. He did a bit on the John Birch Society on Merv Griffin from ‘65 that is more relevant today than ever.
Link to clip works for me…

Watched last night. Not terrible for a first show and you could see glimpses of what it might become…a show that has now amazingly survived for 50 years. Much better than Seinfeld’s first few episodes for sure as those were unwatchable.

Belushi was such a talent. Had me with the opening bit.

SNL on Saturday's at 11:30 was a given in the 70's.

Question for tomorrow night. Will they show, from the 1st season, the Chevy Chase - Richard Prior job interview? IMHO, one of the Top 5 skits in the 50 years of the show. But it would never be done today.
They did; although they bleeped Chevy. In my opinion, it's the most important sketch in the history of the show.

I thought my son had a good question, why was the 50th anniversary show on Sunday instead of Saturday? I guess they wanted to milk the SNL weekend for all it was worth. I thought the show was OK and I certainly enjoyed the older clips the most. Then again I was not the biggest fan of the show and it certainly was not must see TV for me for most of its run.

I liked the sketches with Amy, Maya and Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy doing Tracy Morgan on Black Jeopardy and the retrospective of commercials they made fun of over the years. I thought some others lingered too long like the scared straight sketch with Sudiakis. I liked Adam Sandlers acoustic and probably though Paul Simon was the best of just OK musical acts. Was Bill Hader in a sketch all night?

Hader wasn't there. He declined for some reason.
His publicist said he had a longstanding schedule conflict. Was hoping to see Stefon on Update or Dateline with Keith Morrison. He was a strange bird. Issues with anxiety performing in front of an audience. Never watched himself on tv.

They did a mea culpa introduced by Tom Hanks of all the, let's say, "questionable" sketches over the years. The screen comments accompanying each were pretty funny. The Chase/Pryor sketch was last:

I heard Pamela Stephenson blonde from New Zealand wants nothing to do with snl

what about julie sweeney who played Pat

Robert Blake and OJ.🤣
I didn’t see a mention of Steven Seagal on the show which is probably for the best since Vladimir’s people are monitoring. He is certainly the “GOAT” host based on his complete lack of understanding of all forms of humor according to all those who were on the show at the time.

Watched all three. Great stuff. Started watching SNL that first night in 1975 and have watched most of them (at least through weekend update, lol) since then. Always a hit or miss show, but more than enough funny bits to keep me watching.

I agree.
The only thing I watch other than the occasional decent musical guest is Weekend Update...which is always great.
Jost and Che are great, especially when the annual episode where they write the jokes for each other to say. I still like the show, even though it's hit or miss.

There were times during those bits where they write jokes for each other that I've laughed so hard I was sure I was gonna hurt myself.
