OT: 2025 USNews Rankings Released

I am happy to see Rutgers having success in the rankings the past couple of years, but I remain disappointed by the cost of our in-state tuition compared to some of our peers. Fabulous public universities like Purdue, UNC, Wisconsin, Georgia, Florida, Texas, etc. are all significantly cheaper in-state than Rutgers at $17k (Purdue, UNC, Georgia, and Florida are all sub 10k)
Florida also charges in state tuition if the student has a grandparent living in Florida. Which is a nice perk.

Indeed they do, but not sure about the whole homestead process
Believe it's 2 years

We've done a few informal tours down there (Miami, FGCU and FAU) and for the life of me, I cannot see why any northeastern kid would go to Miami vs any of the public schools in that state, given the cost of UM vs. the publics

Our ACC neighbors to the north
have a thread on their board, lamenting their
ranking at 73
Remembering the days when they were nearer to 50

Sweet
I'm laughing at Yukon for no longer being #1 in publics in New England. UMass passed them. UMass has gotten a lot better, now #58 nationally.

Like some pompous schools like Villanova at 58 ,costing $ 68 thousand.
Nova might dollar for dollar be the most overrated school in America. They're a rich kid Main Line Seton Hall. Just a place for rich Catholic kids from North Jersey or Long Island who couldn't get into any of the Ivies, Notre Dame, Georgetown, or BC. They're above average in business, and...don't really excel at anything else.

It was not long ago that this advertising magazine and their college rankings were decried here. Rightfully so.

Although it’s nice to see higher rankings, the quality of the experience or education is not commensurate with this magazines findings, as their criteria value some things that are meritorious and some that really have no effect on education. Rutgers was solid when it was rang lower and is solid now. Any large state university can afford a thorough and complete education, well, some present a more challenging experience in order to obtain the same. As for private schools, alumni, giving and element and other factors, come into the criteria which really don’t speak to the experience. It’s a pole to sell magazines and should be put in its proper perspective being an AAU. Member is much more important a poll to have succeeded in.

Agree with you in your comments.

Most people look at the rankings without looking at the criteria used for the evaluation.

Remember this US News Ranking is only one of three that US News puts out.

The other two US News Rankings are (2) "Americas Best Graduate Schools" and (3) " Best Global Universities"

Each of the other US News Rankings have their own set of criteria.

Also agree that becoming an AAU Research University member is such a distinction.

A University attracting competitive Research Grants and the Total amount of research money being received is another true sign of how good your school is (IMO).

Pitt (#70) was mentioned in this thread along with other North Eastern Universities (Penn State #63 and 7 other schools ranked #63) all ranked lower than Rutgers (#41). I want to congratulate Rutgers on achieving this ranking.

However, lets incorporate US News rankings of their other 2 publications each with their own set of criteria and how they fit into a true representation of a Universities Capabilities.

Pitt is an outstanding Research University and ALL of their Health Science Programs are ranked in the Top 20 of US News publication "Americas Best Graduate Schools 2024" because of their expertise in many fields Pitt was able to attract $1.16 Billion in total research funding.

When one considers Research Grants awarded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) only 4 schools received more funding than Pitt.

National Institute Research Funding 2024:
University of Pennsylvania: $703 million
Duke University: $701 million
University of Michigan: $698 million
Mass Gen Hospital: $675 million
University of Pittsburgh: $658 million

In US News 3rd Publication "Best Global Universities" Pitt was ranked #50 as the Best Global University in the World (again with its own set of criteria relying strongly on Research Capability and Publications).

According to US News Pitt is ranked #70 in the US but globally it is ranked #50 in the world.

All publications have to be taken with a grain of salt

Again I want to congratulate Rutgers on their #41 ranking (Rutgers Newark #80/Rutgers Camden#98) in the US and used by students and parents when comparing undergraduate education.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Looking at V tech high up as well wondering why they are never in the BIG expansion discussion. I understand the thought is always UVA but personally I'd love to be in a league with VTech again. Maybe they aren't AAU (too lazy to look up)?

Virginia Tech is not an AAU University.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

One of my nephews graduated from Villanova and loved it the first time he set foot on campus. He could have gone to Boston College or Rutgers and my sister would fall off a chair laughing if anyone referred to them as rich lol. He didn’t want a big school and didn’t want one that was too small. Beautiful campus . He majored in Accounting and had a job with one of the big firms by Summer after junior year. All three were admitted and visited Rutgers and one thing they all had in common was that Livingston was their favorite campus and College Avenue was their least favorite. One said he might have gone to Rutgers if the school was just the Livingston campus. Every kid is different, to each his own. Go Rutgers !!!

Popularity contest with not a whole lot of substance behind the criteria. Regardless, it’s good press and it’s more advantageous to be pretty and popular than not.

So which is a better objective measure of a schools true standing?

A ranking based on an established set of criteria which are based on real and verifiable facts.

Consider Carnegie Mellon University the other AAU Research University in Pittsburgh.

In the most recent US News Ranking CMU was the listed as the #21 Ranked National University in the US.

CMU is an outstanding school where their graduates receive some of the best education in the fields of Science, Engineering, Computers ( arguably #1 in the nation in AI and maybe quantum computing), Business Administration (Tepper School of Business), Performing Arts (Margaret Morrison), etc.
To attain this lofty ranking CMU had to compete against the best schools in the US using a set of criteria developed by US NEWS.

Now consider US News Global Ranking which uses an entirely different set of criteria/parameters which are based in some part on the schools research capabilities.

In the US News Global University Ranking, schools must not only compete against the best US schools but also against the best International schools such as Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College of London, University of Toronto, Peking University, Univ of Amsterdam just to name a few.

In the US News Global Ranking (2024), Carnegie Mellon University was Ranked #134.

CMU is ranked #21 in the US but #134 in the Global/World ranking by US News.

Again each US News ranking is based upon a different set of ranking criteria.

The general public for the most part does not do an in depth dive into what the criteria is for establishing the ranking evaluation.

The US News rankings National and Global.

However, I am surprised at the huge discrepancy regarding Pitt's National Ranking and Global Ranking when compared to other schools.

For Example:

CMU: National Ranking #21 and Global Ranking #134.
Rutgers: National Ranking #41 and Global Ranking #148
Northeastern: National Ranking #54 and Global Ranking #227
Pitt: National Ranking #70 and Global Ranking #50

Each ranking has its own set of criteria/parameters. I guess the Pitt administration needs to look into why Pitt is a Great Global University but only a Good National University according to US News Rankings.

Ironic

Is the Global including the med school?

Is the Global including the med school?
Yes

I believe the criteria is heavily based upon Research related outcomes.

I'm sure a Universities Health Sciences/Professions and Hospital Network plays a large part in attracting Research Dollars.
Since CMU has no Health Science Programs or Hospital Network this has probably limited their ability to get additional research funding.

As I stated in a previous post, Pitt received about $658 million form the National Institute of Health (5th in awarded funds for a school) for Research Projects and as a whole Pitt research related funding amounted to $1.16 billion.

I'm not sure if Pitt can do anything about improving the National Ranking results but a number of other schools were able to achieve significant improvement in the last several years.

I think it would be harder to improve the Global Rankings because the data is the data.

Our Board has a discussion on the US News Rankings.

In any case, Rutgers as well as the B1G Conference should be commended upon achieving great National University rankings.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

My guess is grad programs carry more weight in the global.

I think they play apart in as much as it relates to attracting research funds or conducting research projects and research related publications.

US News has ALL of Pitt's Health Professions rated in the Top 20 in their publication "Americas Best Graduate Schools".

Pitt's Health Sciences/Professions and related Hospital Network (UPMC) are Pitt's strongest assests.

Pitt has an amazing medical program. Rutgers should model it after them. RWJBarnabas has to step in up too though. Their hospital rankings have fell dramatically.

Rutgers has combined their Hospitals into one organization. I'm sure going forward this will be a great benefit for Rutgers when applying for future research funding now having a good med school and hospital network.

Nothing but a positive for Rutgers in future rankings.
