OT: $30 Million Gift To Rutgers

Great!

How do gifts like this work?

Write a check?
A set amount is given over a number of years?
Does it go directly to the university who then distributes it?
Does it go into a specific construction account for this project?

But why not downtown adjacent to the clinical buildings of RWJB? Why put this treatment center/residence on the Cook campus?

This was one of the key reasons for the Barchi hire. Like it or not he was brought in to get the medical / health services part of Rutgers up and running. He is a helping raise money for Rutgers and that is a good thing overall.
This is a great move and sets up Rutgers as a child psychiatry powerhouse that is comparable to the world class centers at Yale and Columbia/Cornell in the tristate area.

Side note— the Rutgers School of Health Professions is moving the Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling program from the Scotch Plains satellite campus to Piscataway this Summer.

Cook is underbuilt, poorly planned, and in urgent need of redevelopment. After Livingston, it was always the part of RUNB that needed the most work. There has been a recognition that it needs a bigger footprint, which may well have played into this decision. There will be other construction on Cook in the next couple of years.

Been told by someone in student services, more dorms are coming to Cook. Some will be new and some will be renovations of current ones.

The money will go to the Rutgers University Foundation who will transfer it to the University. This gift encompasses more than just construction so it may even include a portion of funds being held by the foundation for an endowment to fund the Institute long term.

How it's paid depends on the donor and the structure of the gift. The article didn't include a lot of those details (they generally don't) but it could be funded by cash, securities, or other assets. It may be paid all in one shot or spread out over multiple years. Generally it's up to 5 years but when you're talking about an eight-figure gift it could event be spread out over ten years. Also could include a portion of the gift to be made via her estate when she passes. Gifts can be funded and structured in many many ways.

Any word on Rutgers getting the Sears property ?

Sears is still open there.

It's just a matter of time. Whoever the real estate/facilities people at Rutgers are, they should already be negotiating with the landowner to get that site. Maybe even do a sale and leaseback so that Rutgers already owns the ground, collects rent, and is ready to redevelop the day after that store closes its doors.
