OT: Age appropriate spanking?

Hmmm - I wasn't hit - I was made to stand in the corner for a certain period of time. hated it.

I guess that's equivalent to a current day "time-out". I think that worked.....

I guess the issue is how far does old school discipline go today... I'll admit this...I'm old school when it comes to a good whack on the butt...It goes with the parochial school mentality at the time up until the mid to late 70's ( approximate) ...My dad only had to look at us in order for us to realize ...." just don't "...this type of punishment occurred only a handful of times ... I'll defend pop since we stayed out of trouble all our lives... Here is the last time I ever got it from him....I was 16 years old 6'0 190 lbs....My parents had gone to mass at 11 am...my brother (14) and about the same size had just come back from the earlier mass at 10 am...my grandmother had asked us to do something in the kitchen ...unfortunately this lead to a shoving match between siblings with me pushing my brother into the sun parlor glass doors...about 6 panes broke...as my grandmother was screaming we heard the back door opening and foot steps coming up the stairs...my father calmly asked what happened ?...well I stayed on the far side of the dining room table and said, " don't come over here." well dad did just that...I put my hands up in a position to throw a punch but no...it never got off...the next thing I saw were stars and the imprint on my forehead hours afterwards...sounds cruel I suppose but I learned a very important lessen that day... never screw with a WWII navy vet who spent over 4 years service time in the Pacific from age 17 -22... at 5-8" 170 lbs. he was a loving dad but a tough little South Orange Ave., Newark kid ... he NEVER abused us...he just raised us like many others did for years...Was it right then?...I think it was...is it something that more need a bit of ...sorry but yes it might help a great deal...the problem is most parents are now afraid to be called child abusers by even the slightest types of corporal punishments ... the times have certainly changed and not for the better it seems.

I won't even get into the spankings we received growing up. I'm one of 7. Almost all boys. I'll just say that there's a certain way that African-American, southern-reared parents were raised and that was passed on. My son who is 9 gets it on occasion. But not nearly as much as we did growing up. And almost exclusively from Mom. Just as with us.

You obviously do not know enough about sarcasm to attempt to use it. I'd say that is ironic, but you probably do not understand that either. Stop using sarcasm as an excuse.

Yes, that must be right. Your failure to recognize sarcasm was all about me not knowing enough about sarcasm or irony. [laughing]

I just listened to a radio show where I learned in Switzerland, children above the age of 5 are not allowed to be accompanied to school, they must either walk or take the bus...this is done to promote independence and self reliance.
Different subject I know, but it sounds like many of our childhoods in the 60s and 70s...the pendulum here has swung in the opposite direction...using your open hand to discipline children when applicable included.

Hit your child on butt with open hand and you're committing child abuse now.
In 50s it was called disciplining your child.

In 5Os walking alone to school while in kindergarten was fairly normal, if school was close by for most raised in that era.
Now your parents will be arrested , if you walk a block away alone.

What age is appropriate for spanking the monkey?
Pretty much any age. It's not uncommon and is considered normal and healthy (within reason) for preschoolers to do it. I bet that's not an answer you were expecting, eh?
