OT: Anyone going to the PGA Championship @ Baltusrol this week?

Drive to Summit and take the free shuttle from the train station. Much shorter ride than from Clark.

I found out last night I have relatives who are going to the PGA. If they park at my house how close could I get to Baltusrol to drop them off? I've looked at the maps but can't find my answer.

I am taking the Train from Morristown to Summit, Figured this would be the easiest then dealing with the shitstorm in Clark.

Lou - is permit parking required at train station?

Sat and Sunday, No permit required

Thursday and Friday there's limited parking at the Broad Street Garage for non-residents but the NY commuters will fill it up early.

Street parking is available all days outside of about a half mile radius from the station. Closer to the station street parking is restricted.

Summit Middle School is one long block from the train station. It has a lot reserved for employees during the school year. With school out of session these spots might be available. You can call the town to find out.

I'd also like to know how much a resident is charging for Sunday parking and how close (walking) they are to the course. Thanks.

Any idea on what the situation will be if rain pushes the final round/finish to Monday?

I have tickets for Sunday and am wondering if the final round is on Monday, how will the ticket access work? Will I have to attend on Monday only or can still show up on Sunday regardless?

Forecast is iffy with Rain on Friday and Saturday potentially with storms sunday.

Also there is free street parking near the Summit train station? Have a buddy driving up from south jersey and it seems like if he can find a parking spot near the summit train station, that will be better than going to the main parking lot in Clark and getting that shuttle.

thanks for any tips or info guys

Hey guys, I live in Springfield super close to Baltusrol -- less than a half mile walk to the main (public) entrance. I still have parking spots. Please message me for more info. or email me at jbroshapiro @ gmail !

Not much free parking in Summit close to the station. There should be no problem on the weekend. the last time they charged a flat rate at the parking deck next to the station.

As far as rain my guess is that each day's ticket is for that day. Its almost unheard of for a PGA event to have a full day cancelled though weather may push some of Thursday to Friday and so on. If there is the need for play on Monday it might very well become a free event.

If you own a Mercedes, they are a sponsor and have a lot for Mercedes car owners at union county college.... first come first served because of limited space. Then its only a 5-10 min shuttle ride over. The general public parking in Clark is free and about 25-30 min shuttle. You can pay big bucks to park in front of someone's house right by the golf course and then just walk over. Kind of like parking at scarlet/green/yellow/white/blue lots at RU vs parking at the RAC. Big Premium.

I was at Baltusrol with my dad in 2005 (for the final round Sunday) the last time the PGA Championship was played there. It went to a playoff that Phil won on Monday. If it pushes to Monday, Sunday ticket holders get in free for the extra day, at least that was the case last time for the playoff although I couldn't return due to work commitments. It still remains the one and only professional golf tourney that I've had the opportunity to attend in person.

I was planning on going to Clark and taking the shuttle--are people just assuming that situation is going to be a sh!tshow because that's the main parking option or has it already shown to be a disaster? Don't feel like parking there if it's going to take forever to get on the shuttle at 6am

yea i noticed thursdays GA cost more than friday saturday or sunday... odd

Tickets for thursday had to be sold by Monday at 3pm on stubhub in order for the seller to mail them directly. Otherwise, they have to be mailed/dropped off to the stubhub last minute pickup center. Before 3pm there were tons of $40-$50 tickets for Thursday, after 3pm the prices were higher because most of the inventory was taken off the site. I imagine it was similar for Friday's tickets today and so on the rest of the week.

I'm sure the park and ride situation is handled well enough and not a "disaster" but between waiting for a shuttle after parking, a half hour ride and dealing with traffic, likely waiting in a big group for the shuttle to go back, another half hour on the bus...well worth it to spend a few bucks on a quicker/easier solution if available, especially on what's basically a one time thing.

Sounds like a solid warm up to get ready for RU football season!

Anyone been to a practice round yet? Any stories on how the shuttle system has been working so far?

Anyone watch the interviews?

Phil talked about how much the people of this area mean to him and how great {we) have been to him and his family. He mentioned the pizza place near the course he goes to whenever he's in the area. I understand he's a member of Liberty National but didn't know he apparently is in the area more than that.

Andrew "Meat" Johnston said that it took him 4 1/2 hours to play an 11 hole practice round yesterday because he spent so much time with the fans, signing hundreds of autographs and posing for pictures. He apparently is living up to his name, hitting 3 hamburger joints and a Arby's in NYC Saturday night then having lunch at Katz's Deli Sunday.

Jason Day didn't arrive till yesterday and will play 1 practice round today.

Yesterday's long drive contest was won by a player from Asia named An. He beat Rory by two yards, 347-345.

I went yesterday to the PGA practice round with my friend who is caddying for Omar Uresti. My buddy got me caddie credentials so I had access "inside the Ropes" for the whole day. Usually when I go to golfing events I am with the masses of fans so I really enjoyed my time being able to get close to the players. At one point on the practice green I was standing next to Jordan Spieth and didn't even know until some guy came over and asked Jordan to sign his flag and take a selfie.
What I didn't realize is that for the average touring pro/caddie it is not a glamorous life at all. Their job is playing golf and I did not realize how hard they work just to keep their ticket to keep touring. I have to admit it is very intoxicating having people who want to have your autograph and calling out your name and I believe that is why some of these guys continue to stay on tour even though they do not make a boatload of money or have won an event. Walking from the green to the next tee, people are thrusting all manner of stuff at the players to sign. They even wanted me to sign stuff, which I politely declined, although it would have been funny if I did.
The event was surreal, but entirely enjoyable. While the Rock Stars of Golf such as mickelson, McIlroy, spieth, Andrew "beef" Johnston, are taken care of by a cadre of handelers, the average tour golfer toils away at their craft in relative anonymity. These guys treat golf as their job and it is not as glamorous as you think it would be. I spent the whole day with my buddy and his player and if any of you guys are interested in a rundown of how these guys practice for a major I will be happy to tell you what it takes to play the PGA of an "average" tour pro.

Close, he's more restrictive than that. It's "Beef".

I've been able to twice walk with Tour pros, Couples and Cook once and Trevino and Mediate once for a round but it was a totally different set of circumstance. A whole lot more casual with nothing on the line. Still was very interesting listening to them talk.

Uresti is an interesting story. Left the tour and became a club pro (like NJ's Jim McGovern). IIRC he (Omar) played really well in the Club Pro Championship to qualify for this tourney.

I remember the story about Lee Trevino at the '67 Open. He only had enough money to stay at some fleabag motel on Rt 22. He walked along the highway every night to get something cheap to eat. I believe nowadays you have to show you have the funds to support yourself for a year before you can get your tour card. You also have to have a HS degree. There is/was a tour played who had to delay entering the tour after making it thru qualifying school until he got his GED.

I agree it probably isn't as glamorous as many think but at least the 125 guys with the card can make a decent living. They can make money playing Monday outings and appearances as I understand. Right now #150 on tour has made right around $500k this year according to ESPN. That is money won only, Doesn't consider any other ways they earn income. Even if they only get to keep 40- 50% after expenses, taxes, etc that's still pretty good.

I was with Omar yesterday all day. My buddy and I got to Baltusrol at 6:15am and there were already guys going down the 1st hole! We get there, check in, I get my credentials, at this point my buddy goes to meet his player and I go to the practice tee to see whats going on. I get there and Phil Mickelson is on the tee, shortly thereafter Jordan Spieth parks right next to PM and they hit away for about an hour. My buddy texts me that he and his player just left the practice tee and were heading for the 1st tee. This is about 8am. Omar Uresti and Brad Ott tee off as a twosome and begin playing. On the second hole, I begin talking to this lady and her daughter, who it turns out is Brad Otts wife and kid. We all start walking with our group which is just Brad, Omar and the two caddies. At this point there are very few spectators, as it is early and this is a practice round. The play is going slow as both golfers are playing two balls and on each green practice putting. By the time we get to the seventh hole there is a back up of the threesome in front of us which is Rich "Beemer" Beem, Some guy whose name escapes me right now, and Andrew "Beef"Johnston. By the time we get to the ninth hole the crowds have increased greatly and literally Andrew Johnston cannot walk anywhere without someone calling "Beef". On his drives it is a choir of "Beef" "Beef". He has this folk hero status about him much like John Daly. I think because he doesn't fit the typical stereotype of a professional golfer he gets attention. I got to speak with him and he is a really nice, down to earth guy. By the time we get to 18 there are thousands of people lining 18th hole. It is a pretty cool feeling walking down the center of a fairway with all those people watching, and I am just walking. After the round was over about 12:30 My friend and I head over to get something to eat. We take about 30 minutes to cool off, eat, and check our phones. My buddy leaves because his player is going to the driving range for an hour and then to the putting green for an hour. While he goes off, I have some time to wander around. I see Mickelson and Spieth coming off 18 a few groups behind us. I watched as mickelson and spieth signed hundreds of autogrpahs, they were out there for an hour.
I went looking for Brian Gaffney who grew up in Westfield but since they were not keeping track of who was out on the golf course they didn't know if he was playing. I met up with my friend and his player on the practice green and watched as he hit putt, after putt, after putt, looking for the slightest variations in how the ball broke, speed, and whatever else could give him the edge. This lasted until about 3:30pm. The player went for physical therapy while my buddy was in charge of watching his players clubs and was instructed not to put the clubs in his players car for 45 minutes so the player would get out PT shortly thereafter before the clubs got too hot as this could affect their performance. Note: for us weekend hackers this does not apply, LOL. We left the golf course at 4:30 and I will say I was pretty spent. He and his player do that routine everyday leading up to tournament day although the day before the start they do a "light" schedule which means they will leave the course at 2-2:30pm to get rested before the tournament start. I am going Friday and hopefully my friends player makes the cut!

Sounds like a long but thrilling day for any golf fan

I believe Golf Channel did a profile on Gaffney this week. Is he the guy who's looking to become the only club pro to ever make the cut in two consecutive PGA's? First tournament he ever won as a youth was at Baltusrol?

Just spotted YE Yang at the Livingston Starbucks. Probably wouldn't recognize him if not for the official pga Mercedes vehicle parked outside and the PGA tags around his neck.

Was there today, shuttles to and from lot Q were running efficiently.

Got to say "Go RU" to a few folks wearing the block R.

This tournament is getting less buzz than John Deere Classic. Very bad timing.

How could you have this two weeks after the British Open?

was there today, saw a lot of people wearing the block R, was wearing my hat & had the red golf shirt going!

Olympics start in 10 days and go to end of August. I'm guessing that's the main reason.
