OT: Anyone replace their Comcast router with one they have purchased?

just goooogle it. .... many articles about this. I have thought of doing the same thing for some time. I'm convinced that they try to make it as complicated as possible to dissuade people from doing it.

I have Comcast and use my own modem and wireless router

You need to make sure you get a modem and router and it is docsis 3.0 . I bought a motorola surfboard last month and I have no problems.

Comcast charges $10/month for their router. Anyone here purchase one to avoid the monthly fee?

Don't have Comcast, but I bought one of these a while ago. Works great; no problems:

Netgear
N600 WiFi Cable Modem Router Model C3700

you can buy one from best buy that is actually what comcast leases out to customers. i bought it a few months ago and all it takes is a phone call to get it up on the network.

Yeah did this a few months ago. Bought a Motorola model off Amazon. Hooked it up, when through some set up steps to get it started, and it has worked ever since. Never even had to call them, since Comcast's system in South Jersey seems to be set up to let users hook up their own modem.

I replaced the Comcast rental with my own a couple of months ago. I didn't do it to save money because the purchase cost me over $200. I did it because of technical issues with the leased router. I had the Comcast techs out to my house at least once a months for 2 years and they couldn't improve on the incredibly slow download times (usually lower than 5 mps) even though they replaced the router/modem with a new one several times. I finally got fed up and bought my own (a different model than the leased one) on Amazon. it works like a charm, Download times are consistently better than 50 mps.

I'm glad I got rid of them.Mentioning Comcast to me is the same as mentioning Niagara Falls to Sidney Fields.

Comcast capable Motorola DOCSIS 3.0 modems can often be found for ~$40 on woot.com

You need a Motorola SB6121. Google it and you'll find plenty of places to buy one. I have Comcast and replaced my rented modem and it worked perfectly fine. You will need to call Comcast after replacing the modem because they will need the MAC address from your new modem.

does this modem have wifi and does it have telephony?

I want to since I cannot filter or check on traffic with the optimum router. I don't pay money, but thinking of switching.

great question. My company pays my monthly home I Net but I still can't stand seeing this monthly fee and was going to ask them about letting me buy one.

screw it.. I just bought a "very good" used off Amazon for $43 free shipping ($64 for a new one)...Company can get it's $ back in 4.5 months..let the accountants complain about that one..

I guess I would add is the BLAST Speed really worth that fee too?

I was going to purchase my own modem until I found out the modems necessary to get the higher speeds (300 Mbps) are $100+. Even though the less expensive modems are technically capable of getting the higher speeds, the cable companies require 16x4.

You can buy combination modem/routers, but I wouldn't unless its a space thing. Modems are pretty basic and durable. WiFi routers are more feature rich and tend to flake out more often in my experience. For trouble shooting and recycling when you switch to the next carrier, I would keep them separate devices.

I use..

- motorola Docis 3.0 modem Surfboard model SB6120 (probably newer available by now.. here is one analysis)
- Asus RT-AC87 (this is pretty sweet, latest-greatest) about $300 at Bestbuy. Seems like a lot, but without it I would need repeaters around the house. I also use a wifi-assisted cell phone.. so this helps with that as well. The more devices you have talking wifi, streaming stuff, the more you need something like this.

At $10/month to rent one, you make your money back in less than a year. If you're concerned about cost, you're missing that after one year of service you've already paid Comcast $120 for a $100 router.

Has anyone here done the same thing with FIOS? If so, any problems? What type of router did you get?

You should hold out another year for a Docsis 3.1 modem as comcast will be rolling it out within the next year (a modem will take a year to pay for itself) that way you can take advantage of the higher speeds (2gbps) they will offer.

Anyone hook up the free router from Cablevision? I had issues hooking it up and it's still sitting on the side. They have sent several emails reminding me to hook it up. I've ignored them since my current system is working fine.

Bought the Motorola Surfboard at Costco about 3 years ago for $75 instead of paying a $7/month rental. Paid for itself in 1 year, was easy to setup and have had no problems at all in 3 years.
