OT- Big Brawl at girls NJ HS BB game

Was reading about this last night, I imagine there has to be videos of the brawl, not going to be pretty to watch.

that's an awful story

if they don't fold program they should have to play all road games for a while at least

and stronger police presence will be required at every game if they ever get home ones again

no easy solution on this one...remember MANY years ago when Englewood had to play
to empty gym after an ugly boys BB brawl

Newark doesn't have spare police. They didn't even respond to the calls.

Back in the late 60's I was at Walsh (Seton Hall) for an ECT doubleheader when a brawl erupted after East Orange was upset by WO Mountain. It started when some EO fans attacked the ref's and spread into the stands. People were fighting all over the place. It took police from several towns to finally restore order. They decided to play the 2nd game which involved the other WOHS with police surrounding the court. I don't believe the ECT was back at SHU the next year.

I didn't read the article but I saw something about ref's being attacked and parents arrested after a hockey game at Ice World recently.

How is it not mandatory to have security at High School events?

Remember fondly having to get a yearly police escort out of South Amboy whenever we played Hoffman and St Mary's

Ah, the old East Orange, remember it well. The chant of EO EO if we don't win you don't go.
We would go to Belleville HS away FB games at Martens Stadium in the mid 60s..always dangerous..esp with the old racial tension..

It's funny you say that. We used to walk from WO to EO for BB games. Once twice even when they (EO) were playing someone else. Never gave it a thought or had any issue. The only HS I ever remember having recurring issues with was Columbia and that had more to do with the long standing Thanksgiving football rivalry.

I went to Columbia HS - but that was back in the early 70s...... Horrible football team then. Great Ultimate Frisbee team though!

Horrible maybe but you guys always had WO's number back in my day. WO could go into the game with a winning record and Columbia winless but the Coug's would still come away with the win. Don't know if you're aware but it was the only game where Columbia was the home team every year from at least the 50's to early 70's because the stadium was big enough to hold the crowd.

Any idea when they stopped playing? I believe they played the game for over 50 years.

Remember...i'm talking the riot era and we bussed it myself and a few friends on the 13 Broad....11-13 yr olds and god forbid we beat them..

No clue - Didn't go the the football games, was busy playing Ultimate Frisbee - our Ultimate captain was also a captain on the FB team though (Dave Leiwant).....

I thought it was:
"1,2,3,4,5
we don't take no jive
6,7,8,9,10
damn right we're gonna win."
Maybe they created a second one, but I remember it clearly.

We also had an empty gym game against Roselle.

Having officiated a few sports, I'll make a couple comments.
Obviously these are inner city kids.
I did a soccer game with 1 of the Newark magnet schools involved. Those kids were some of the best behaved kids I've officiated & I let their coach know it. He remarked that these kids were 'chosen' to attend the school & indicated that it was a privilege they were given. Made it seem like, they better behave or that privilege could be forfeited. Regardless, the kids seemed like good kids.
I know that some, if not all, urban school districts receive federal money, often IMHO excessive. Some of this money is spent on security, including police present at games. Most schools have that at home games, but some schools like New Brunswick send 2 officers + additional security to ALL away basketball games (could be other sports as well). I witnessed a girls BB game with maybe 50 people in attendance, half of whom seemed asleep, where they had these out of town officers present. To me, it was a waste of taxpayer money. The home team should be responsible for security except in instances of real rivalries, where large fan bases can sometimes get rowdy, or in cases where 2 schools have a history of trouble between themselves. I'm very surprised that in Newark there wouldn't be any officers present. Also seems likely spectators may have been responsible for most injuries, as was the problem with the Howell hockey fiasco.

No wonder Zuckerberg is pissed about how his $100MM was spent.

I remember just laughing out loud when someone told me about that gift. What an idiot. He had no idea what he was doing, and apparently none of his advisors did either. He could have done so much good with that money. Could have saved thousands of lives. Instead he gave it to literally one of the only places on earth where it was guaranteed to make no difference at all. And anyone from NJ could have told him that.

Stop making stuff up. That wasn't posted on here. Besides that doesn't line up at all with the kind of demographic that would attend such an event.

It was on one of the local paper's web site. I believe two parents so far have been charged but could have the number wrong.

Yup. That kind of nonsense only happens with certain people in certain places right? My point was it's happen way back when and continues throughout society. I just will never understand the mindset that says if we can't win the game, we'll win the fight.

Roselle is also somewhat inner city.
The stretch along rt.27 that borders Linden is gritty

Oh....you finally picked up on that, eh ?
I try not to look at screen names before I read posts.....after reading his blatant attempt to interject race in the thread, I clicked on his name. It's astonishing how many of his posts are race baiting.

A few years back I was at my daughters middle school basketball game in Pleasantville. Pleasantville was up big at halftime and the game got out of hand in the 2nd half with the Pleasantville girls physically contesting every shot and possession and a few pushing fights started. My daughter is not afraid of anyone and almost enjoys a challenge like that so she was all in. Pleasantville and their coach was more focused on starting something than trying to win. Our team actually came back and ended up winning and it got very ugly w/ their coach and parents. Their coach actually went up to my daughter after the game and started yelling at her. Remind you this was 7th grade. The Pleasantville police actually gathered up our team and fans and escorted us out to our bus.

I have noticed that a lot of parents at predominantly black schools do not like losing to all white teams in basketball. For the most part the kids are all good anywhere we play, white, black, brown, it doesnt matter. This particular team had issues and I have seen this coach in action before and I feel she is the reason the team responded the way they do.

When dealing with kids it's rarely truly their fault. For every kid acting wrong on the field there is usually a crappy coach or jackoff parent allowing or even fueling the behavior.

I was once center reffing a U19B soccer game in Jersey City. At one point in the second half a player came up from behind me and starting tapping me on the shoulder. He said "look ref". My daughter (who was a linesman at the game), also started waving her flag. I turned around, and there were about 20 parents running onto the field from both sidelines and were fighting with one another. I yelled to them to stop immediately and get off the field or the game was over and I was leaving. They actually stopped and (with the players help), got off the field. We were able to continue and finish the game.

Parents can certainly be idiots at games at times......
