OT: Cargo Shorts...

Plenty of real men live their lives not worrying or thinking about what other men are wearing or caring what others think, and they are better men for it. Many other examples of men had insecurity and other issues who compensated by trying to be fashion plates, but they were broken men.

Do you really believe that you don't care what anyone thinks about you? I find that most people who say that internally feel quite the opposite. Otherwise, what would be the need to tell everyone that you don't care?

Why comment on this thread if you are so above it?

To answer your first question-yes, I really believe that. I am comfortable in my own skin and clothes. I care what people think about my words and actions. And I accept people the same way- based on what they say and do, and not by where they come from or what they are wearing. Thank you for sharing your findings.

I never said I was above the thread. I commented because a few posters felt the need to be haughty about what they think other men should wear. My observation has been that the several men I have known who behave in this way have multiple issues in their lives--but they look fabulous doing it because they will tell you so.

That was cathartic. I need to launder my cargo shorts and cotton t shirts.

Multiple people have said the same thing I said, that most high end restaurants in this area, even in NYC, don't have dress codes, i.e., cargo shorts would be ok. Unless you're telling me California has now become more conservative/snooty than NYC, I'm not sure what you're talking about. Are you telling me you don't consider classic NYC steakhouses as "high end?" All the ones I've been to allow cargo shorts - I might be a bit underdressed compared to many other patrons, but I don't really give a shit, as I like being comfortable and I don't care that much about the approval of others. You appear to be much more concerned with appearances.

It would be very inappropriate to wear cargo shorts many places here. That is all I can say. High end restaurants wouldn't seat you. Trendy places would likely snicker at you. You probably wouldn't feel comfortable even though you say you would.

Appearance is somewhat important, but not as much as being appropriate.

My advice? Ditch the cargo shorts and spruce up your wardrobe. Only good things will come of it.

Weak, petty arguments. One thing (taking care of yourself) has nothing to do with the other thing (being a prick/bad husband/bad boss). Those are excuse arguments. Plenty of men manage to take care of themselves and are good husbands, bosses, people. It's not a one or the other choice.
I don't see how taking care of yourself and not being a slob comes into this discussion. Does wearing cargo shorts mean you aren't taking care of yourself?

I am perfectly fine with simply not being a customer of a place that would judge me for wearing cargo shorts.

My words you quoted were a response to being called a prick for saying that some men's styles are timeless and others are not by someone who says they don't care about what other people think of them .... sounds like someone is pretty sensitive about what other people think of them

In fairness, the other poster (not me) said "prick" in response to your post which said:
"Being a man does not equal being a slob as some here have insinuated."

Lost track of how we got to that statement, but wearing items that are perceived to be out of date does not equate to being a slob. I just laundered and ironed my cargo shorts and cotton t-shirts. They are clean and wrinkle-free. I am not a slob.

For a guy that says he does not pay much attention to what other men wear, you sound pretty fixated on these well dressed men you keep mentioning.

Are you so utopian that you wear dirty, ripped clothing to business meetings and nights out with your wife. Of course not, I am sure, which means that you do care, you have just chosen an arbitrary cutoff line like everyone else. Stop acting like you are above it when you are obviously not.

Yeah, Doc Pocket Square got multiple posts mixed up there and also self-edited/selectively remembered pretty hard.

You are right .... you just liked the post that called me a prick and then follow up immediately with a post echoing that posters thoughts.

Dr. Knight, the purportedly well-dressed "men" would strut around bragging about what hot brand they were wearing, how much it cost and then would bag on other guys for wearing cheaper/less fashionable clothes. A few folks in this thread reminded me of those guys. I find such guys amusing, as they are girlish in this way. No fixation, but a correlation.

See my other post. Wearing clothes that are perceived to be out of date/fashion and being a slob are two different things. I am above dirt. That is all. We don't seem like we are going to agree on this thread. I wish you no ill will. It just seems you are getting cleanliness/sloppiness confused with fashion. People can wear fashionable clothes and be slobs too.

You seem worried about what others think about you. You also project a lot of thoughts onto others based upon what they like. Peace out. I have to do whites--my knee high athletic socks that I wear with my cargo pants need to be soaked in bleach before I launder them.

I honestly didn't know cargo shorts were "out" until my wife dropped a hint about it a couple months ago.

Apparently I wasn't phasing them out fast enough and she got rid of most of them herself during the last donation purge.

Now whenever we're out, I just throw excess stuff in her purse.

She's not amused, LOL

Cool comeback bro ..... I learned about how to carry myself from my grandfather, who stormed the beaches in Normandy and help build the economic machine of the US. Times change on some things, this is not one.

Those guys are d-bags then .... but there is nothing about taking care of yourself that means you have to be a d-bag. Why to you insist on making them one and the same?

6 pages on cargo shorts.
::::sigh::::::

I remember when the most controversial thing on this board were snow fences......

Comeback? You didn't insult me or offer much poignancy to "come back" at.

I'm having trouble picturing your grandfather storming Normandy in his freshly tailored suit and wingtips, but good on him! Think cargo shorts or cargo pants would have been more comfortable, though.

All the men of that era dressed with self respect no matter how much or how little money they had.

It could. The wear cargo shorts everywhere seem to fit that mold.

That's cool, to each his own. I'd argue you are missing out on some great experiences, but that's just me. If I am looking to spend a grip on a great meal and I walk into a place with a bunch of dudes in cargo shorts, I am walking straight out.

Cargo shorts to a nice restaurant is just inappropriate. I guess you can do it to what some might think are nice places, but that doesn't mean you should.

Getting confused. Would not wear shorts to any high end restaurant.

Does not answer the cargo short question though. ;-)

Understand the functionality of the shorts completely. More pockets=more storage. To that end, I think people just look absolutely hilarious with all of their "cargo" weighing down their shorts. I don't wear cargos because I don't like how they look and don't have nearly enough "cargo" to wear cargo shorts for it to be functional

I am all about being comfortable but I don't agree with the idea of wearing gym clothes out during the day unless you're going to the gym.

Let's be real, your wallet, phone and keys will weigh the shorts down and you will be showing the world more than you want to see.

Cargo Shorts & a RU tee or V-neck is perfect summer errands gear.

So bottom line, these shorts are the "in" thing?

Oh vey. The sissiefication of America continues. Manly shorts these are not.

I'm having a hard time understanding your comparisons. Are you saying that by wearing cargo shorts on a regular basis, I don't respect myself?

I wouldn't wear white shorts personally but what are "manly" shorts in your opinion?

Agree.

Also agree. But I do the like the Champion mesh shorts with pockets if I am not using a locker that day.

Partially agree. I do not like a v-neck t.

How exactly does something go out of style anyway? Who decides this? My reasoning for wearing cargo shorts had nothing to do with fashion in the first place so I'm not going to stop wearing them now.

IMO some styles of cargo shorts where never "in".

I'd say it also has to do with the more generous cut, despite how your nuthuggers are "exactly the same".

6 pages deep and I still have no idea how cotton tshirts are "out".

Depends on the cotton shirt. Thin cotton shirts are acceptable. Thick ones you get handed for free at ball games, not so much.

Here is a good compromise for the must wear cargo shorts crowd.

How thin is thin with regard to t-shirt? Too thin and IMO it's a girls shirt. But that's just me.
