OT: Chicken

No but I was in the military and spent a lot of time in the south surrounded by avid hunters. Many of them that I've remained in touch with have since quit after realizing how much they were contributing to the suffering of animals. Some I know have even become vegetarian.

I don't believe you.

What are your thoughts on eating chicken brands purchased in typical supermarket...Tyson, Perdue...etc, that say no hormones, no GMO, no antibiotics, etc. Is this enough of a safeguard for my family and I to eat?

We are healthy eaters for most part, no beef, low sugars, minimally processed, etc...But we do eat a lot of chicken, so don't want to be counter productive and eat chicken that is really no good either.

The Perdue supermarket brands are inexpensive, but is it healthier to buy the organic brands that basically have the same packaging labels? Are there any other options? What do you all buy and eat? Thoughts?

Do you really feel you need to skip beef?

Did you know cage free chicken raising is more inhumane then raising caged chicken. At least in a cage the chickens can't get to each other. In cage free barns the chickens are so packed in they literally kill and eat each other for space. Chickens are omnivores they'll eat anything.

Also free range chicken on labels is a crock. They cut a hole in the wall to a 10' x 10' pen. But they feed the feeder chickens so much they never go outside and eat bugs and such like they were meant. Free range labeling sounds and sells better.

O and those healthy brown eggs your buying, those are just a certain type of chicken that lays brown eggs. There's nothing healthier about them they just look the part. Actually you can get certain types of chickens that lay olive, tan. white, brown, cream, dark brown, and blue eggs.

Olive and Blue sound like fun.

Just raise your own. You decide what hormones go into them, what they eat, and have fresh chicken any time you like. Plus a chicken tractor is pretty easy to build & is both attractive & saves you time mowing the lawn.

Chicken tractor is awesome.

True story- A friend of mine from North Carolina (lots of chicken farms) had a high school job as a 'chicken chaser' , lol. He would literally run down, and corner or trap stray chickens on a big, corporate chicken farm.

I knew a guy named Rocky who trained for that job.

I mean no red meat or pork, not sure what else to call it? Maybe I'll have a steak once a twice a year at fancy restaurant. We just eat turkey and chicken and a little fish

I was just wondering if you felt the need to skip it because you feel it's not healthy for some reason. No worries. I don't have a chicken in this fight.

While I eat all meats, I have started to cut it down. With the way these international trade agreements are, you won't know if your meat was produced in the US or China and China has a lot of problems with food production.

BUT, even if it was produced in the US, I know large poultry producers in the US use arsenic to grow their chickens fat. It's not really something I want to consume but I'm not sure if 'arsenic' is considered an antibiotic or hormone or anything.

However, I have had a really hard time cutting meat out completely because it tastes so good.

Growing up with my Dad smoking cigars and Mom smoking cigarettes, trucks and buses spewing clouds of black smoke, chasing after the mosquito spray truck down the street, consuming large quantities of sugar & salt, eating burgers, hot dogs, canned veggies, processed lunch meats, drinking whole milk, eating white bread, butter and mayo, I have no idea I have survived approaching 70 years old.

For anyone who mocks vegans or vegetarians I would recommend you visit a farm sanctuary. I was ignorant about food preparation, thought I was a machismo like some of the responses in this thread and consumed a lot of meat in my diet, then I educated myself.

The processes used by large food production companies to put that chicken on your plate each night is unsettling, physically unhealthy and in my opinion a systemic threat to the health of us all. To get a sense for the inhumane practices, simply Google "forced-molting."

Over the past year I have shifted primarily to a vegan-centric diet. I will occasionally eat meat or fish if I feel it was properly prepared and humanely raised. From personal experiences I've never felt better, I work out 7 days a week and I'm in the best shape of my life competing in triathlons, ultras, and road races.

At a minimum it is good to be educated, and then do what you want with that information.

If you find yourself on your deathbed soon you will surely understand why you didn't make it till '90.

I have considered the point and it does have an effect on me enough to make me hope we start making meat in a lab. That said, while sad looking, let's not anthropomorphize these animals too much. If your born into a box and live your whole life in a box and have an IQ of .0000004 I'm not sure you're sad that you're confined. It's just life. And life on the bottom or middle of the food chain sucks. Either you live a short life in a box and turn into food or you run around the woods for a short amount of time freezing, suffering from disease and eaten alive by a different bigger predator. Life's real hard for prey.

You're probably getting by on your good looks.

I grew up near a large chicken processing facility in South Jersey. You can never unsmell that smell that wafts from the building for a good quarter mile.

The closer you can get to the actual kill, the better.

It may not have affected you directly, but I have a suspicion that all this "manufactured food product" has something to do with the increased incidence of allergies that we are seeing with young children.

Growing up, I knew one kid with a milk allergy. One kid.

Now there are literally dozens of kids with all kinds of allergies at my kid's daycare. Allergies are so common nowadays that daycares have a list of foods strictly prohibited. And if you go to a chain restaurant, the wait staff is probably well versed on selection ingredients and has probably been formally trained on how to cater to guests with allergies.

Same thing with peanut allergies right? How much of this is better information now than in the past or more caution / over-protectiveness now?

I am not quite sure how one can ever feel full or satisfied on a non-meat diet unless they eat a sh!t ton of carbs. What do male vegetarians eat?

Planning: You can look up all the different chemicals used in food preparation (both meat and non-meat) that were introduced and then subsequently banned.

And I never suggested a non-meat diet. I continue to eat bacon, Spam, hot dogs, etc.

I just don't eat nearly as much anymore. A fistful of meat per day and I'm good. Doubled (tripled?) up on fruits and veggies and significantly cut simple carbs (breads, pastas, chips, cereals, etc.). Again, not sure how healthy that is either, but I look & feel better at least..?

So according to many, non beef eaters should suffer from much lower cancer rates. I'm wondering if any study has been conducted to compare cancer rates of Hindus in India and let's say Muslums in Pakistan.

I found a few articles that suggest their cancer rates are as high or higher but that the results may be skewed by the fact that they are, in general, much heavier smokers.

Screw - I think for the lesser animals, such as chickens or hens this is fair assesment; and I agree that to a point, it's just life. What surprised me though is the intellectual capacities of say a pig, are some of the highest in the animal kingdom and the treatment of these such animals is where I feel more should be done to treat them humanely.

I think you summed it well, life is real hard for prey.

For the vegans out there - what's the difference between me eating a pig and one getting dragged down by a coyote or a wolf or some such? Food is food.

Yeah it sucks and I'm not immune to the argument. Hopefully we'll figure out cheap good lab meat and smarter animals can go back to just being eaten by bears and lions. Not much better but we won't have our guilt.

But all the good tasting things are Carbs!

High end meat is NOT bad for you.

Processed meat (aka meat in a can, etc.) would most likely give you cancer if you eat too much of it.

I did a low carb thing for 3 weeks one time. No fruits, some vegetables, but nothing over 5 or 6 grams per serving. Lots of protein and natural fats. I never felt better, but it was so hard to do the first week. Extremely difficult to sustain, but the results were amazing.

The difference is the pig you eat was raised via factory farming, in a gestation crate. From birth that pig had no ability to move around, was forcefully fed food to the point of obesity and then subsequently killed. The pig getting dragged down by a coyote or wolf assumes said pig had the ability to physically mobilize, discretion to consume at it's own merit and freedom to make its own decisions.

I would pose the question back to you, which of the above existences would you prefer for yourself?

I have no problem with the latter scenario and death for the pig, I do have issue with the former.

Splitting hairs.

It's a pig.

at this point I am a vegetarian who cheats once a week,,,,,,ive lost 44lbs
but I also swim a mile 3x a week and bike a lot....

Never felt better

Where did you get this information from?
Various sources saying the same thing and my own experience. Being a (hobby) farmer you start to rub elbows with other farmers. You get newsletters and go online to certain blogs to see if anyone has a similar problems. It's well known common knowledge in farming circles. The general public isn't as informed. It's not like Perdue or Tyson are going to publicize what their farmers actually do.

Did you know fresh farm eggs can sit on the counter for up to 3 months as they have a protective membrane on them. The ones you buy in the store can't, since they're washed and bleached removing the coating. Also GMO plants are perfectly fine to eat. It's the insecticides they spray on them that make them dangerous. Monsanto's the company the US gov't seems to trust with our food supply, modified plants so Roundup their product can be sprayed to kill weeds and insects.

Well turns out no one really extensively studied Roundup. Now they are, France and California have already banned Roundup sales from local Garden centers. Early studies have shown some cancerous findings. There's a reason it kills bees, because it's not meant to be consumed. You really think they get rid of all the insecticide when produce is washed. What about what the plant consumes through the roots. Sorry but I don't trust a company with my food that got it's start by manufacturing Agent Orange. IMO it's going to turn out to be another big Tobacco case. I eat the crap as well, as everyone uses Monsanto's seed so they can have cheap weed and insect control.
