OT: Dave Leitao to DePaul

Wow! That 63-60 record at UVA is inspiring. Some of these firings(Barnes, Lavin, Sendek)seem downright silly or firing for firing sake. This hiring, hard to believe, appears even worse. A guy who abandoned your program....

Just speaks to how unattractive the DePaul program is... Surey they put out feelers to some of the bigger available names

Leitao went to 2 NIT's and 1 NCAA in the 3 years he was there. Only time will tell how awful of a hire it is.

Like hiring Eddie was such a great move by RU. We panicked and jumped the gun on EJ. We should have taken our time and allowed the next AD to make the hire. Julie doesn't own that debacle.

If she doesn't own it then she should feel more empowered to make a change if its not working. Problem is a lack of support from the top of the house.

If next year is bad and she can't pull the money together to make a change, she will own it.

If the funds were there, I think she makes a change in a heartbeat. She gets no support and honestly, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if she jumped ship. RU Athletics is a disaster- it would be interesting to know what she was told during the interview process and whether or not she was lied to about future support moving forward.

I think I would take Waters back. Just get him assistants who can recruit. We all know he can coach.

I would take Wenzel back at this point!

If that was Leitao's last job you perhaps would have a point, but he left DePaul hanging to go to UVA where he was barely .500. He wasn't fired... he abandoned Depaul. No thanks for me and I suspect many if not most feel the same way. Not impressed.

Not unless he brings Van Gundy with him.

True on both accounts.

At least Leito has something to sell to future recruits, i.e. their new downtown arena opening in 2017, which he obviously didn't have before.

This is basically the type of hire we'd have to make in the past. I can't blame them. He had some success with them, certainly more than Oliver Purnell so I can't blame them for reaching back so they can at least get try and get back to mediocre and work their way up from there. Will he have as much success as he did in there before? I don't know but I can't blame them. How many options did they have anyway and reaching back to past success isn't a terrible idea.

I've always said in the past we'd have to make the lower mid major hire or someone who is on the backside of their career. So someone like a Masiello, (not Archie Miller/Smart/Marshall), or you hire a Howland type. I know most here don't like the older coach and are always jumping on that young up and comer bandwagon but if a guy can coach and still has it in him I'm all for it. If you're lower down the totem pole those are your options and I don't see the old guy like a Howland/Larry Brown/Larranaga as a bad options. In my mind they can at least get you back to mediocre from the basement and you work your way up from there in the future.

Boro, nice to see that you were paying attention in 1988-89. Van Gundy was the special sauce.

Van Gundy is amazing but no digs at Bob as he did get us to the tourney twice!

How many coaches get fired after two years, even with new ADs.

The coach who followed Mike Rice, given the rebuild needed, and the lack of money that was going to be available for hiring him, was likely going to flame out. Not making hiring a new sure fire failure the new ADs first move was actually a pretty smart move by RU.
