OT: Just to catch up on what is going on in CFB NIL world. Portnoy offers $3mil for a QB for Michigan

So…basically…

Alumni parent willing to pay school $3M to have child, that meets all admission criteria, accepted = bad?
Random college football fan that is sports media figure and pizza connoisseur wiling to pay $3M to QB,, that like would not meet all admission criteria, to attend UM = good?
NIL didn't change the way schools adjust their admissions criteria for student athletes in revenue sports. That ship sailed long ago.

NIL is more analogous to how colleges compete for the best academic performers by putting together scholarship packages to entice students to select their school over others . Nobody complains about that.

I don’t disagree with much of what you are saying. The point I’m making is that states are passing laws that would prevent public and private schools from giving preference in admissions to qualified students with alumni or donor ties. Yet, states don’t give a F that a multi-millionaire media figure will pay $3M to a kid that can throw a football in order to get him to UM? WTH is going on in this country?!?!

This may be true. I watch more college and high school sports than the pros because it always seemed like the purest form of competition. If college sports becomes nothing more than an arms-race backed by rich alumni/fans, the have-nots will throw in the towel and many schools and athletes will suffer as a result. FWIW, I’ve talked to some head coaches of top D1 non-revenue sports teams and they have no clue how their programs will be funded under the new settlement. They all basically said the same thing = it’s great for football and basketball but bad for other sports (with a few exceptions) unless the schools are willing to dramatically increase athletic budgets.
The NFL is a much purer form of competition than college football is.

I mean, if you want to look at the way people/organizations prioritize spending, college athletics is way down the list of nutty behavior.

What with it being election season, look at the truly massive amount of spending on elections. A mere fraction of that spending could solve all kinds of political issues. You could eliminate homelessness with a fraction of the combined spending on political campaigns. And like 85% of the voters already know how they're voting and no amount of spending will persuade them otherwise. It's totally nuts.

I saw that. It’s a crazy world out here.

I’m trying to wrap my head around two thought processes

1. Do people like this just have so much money that this is like their way of owning a part of a sports team , without being a billionaire . So it’s just money towards their own ego, pride, entertainment and “power”?
I mean my tiny donations towards RU are essentially the same thing. I hope it helps the team win. My hundreds or thousands in donations I guess is the equivalent of his net worth to mine ??? Except I get a little gift from RU while he probably gets full access and treated like part of the team.

2. It’s crazy college players are essentially bribed in public now. None of this feels like it’s going to end well. It’s gotta be temporary.. right ?
To make it authentic you have to slip the money to him under the table in a town paper bag

Fanatics is paying Dylan, we helped broker
Ace is getting paid 1 mil - via our NIL
Gavin got 1mil, I believe at least some, if not all, was via our NIL
Ace and Dylan are in top 5 Nil athletes in college bb. Fanatics paying them is no Different then Portnoy using his company to pay a Mich QB. What are we even talking about?
How bad Schiano is engaging corporate business into his program??
Rutgers has been paying kids all the way back to the 90’s when I was there.

I don’t care who pays who, and as I’ve said, add nausea on this board, I am completely in favor of kids getting paid and love NIL

This might be an underrated point in this NIL discussion.
