OT- Efingers going out of business after 107 years

I have been going there all my life and even worked there for a year. It was definitely a blow when I heard they were closing this morning.

Everyone that ever shopped online for sporting related equipment instead of going to effingers is guilty. Think of all the stuff they sold to generations and kids they employed. Amazon or dicks may have had it cheaper, but now there is blood on your hands .

Just saw before I came here .Very sad but Effingers, in a sense, cooked their own goose (may have also have been a victim of less spending after the Wall Street meltdown.
Major problems:

1) Price. With the exceptions of closeouts Effingers' prices were incessantly high. That was ok for some of the wealthy in the area but I usually found stuff cheaper elsewhere after the advent of box stores and the internet.

clothing-Kohls was always much cheaper with "Kohls cash"
camping equipment (late in game for me)-Walmart cheaper
Running shoes-unless one lucked out (small window) always much cheaper on Internet. In fact (also see below) 70% of the time I'd try something on at Effinger's and purchase on the Internet.
winter clothing-Flemington Department Store, Kohls and even Walmart (right now I'm wearing an $11 pullover 90%+ cotton 9rare nowadays) I bought at Walmart pre opening game last year.
scouting-Flemington dept store had a much bigger section

2) Inventory-As above I did sometimes feel guilty (in later years I visited Effingers less often and barely looked at their clothing due to high price) and wanted to buy my Asics Gel Kayanos there. 80%-90% of the time Effingers was out of my size. The 1-2 times in the past 5+ years they had my size it was for the more expensive, newer model (and I ordered the older, much cheaper version online). If they had the same model I wanted, it was always $20-$30 more expensive (sorry but have had trouble in job market before my sister's theft/house sale/foreclosure and Effingers isn't the R Fund). The one time I was offered a discount or matching price I did purchase from Effingers. Ditto the once I had a coupon. Also, unlike the box stores could Effingers have helped themselves by carrying lots of wides but didn't do that.

As I offered a few months ago in a well "liked" thread, the Kayanos don't change much so for many years I've ordered online from either RNJsports.com (just ordered a tough to get previous model (22s) for $99.95 w free shipping), Holabirdsports.com and even ebay.

3) Couponing-rarely did Effingers offer coupons. During the past few years ran several Google searches for Groupon, etc but NEVER found an Effingers coupon online (occasionally one was sent to my home or email).

Effingers was a fun store in its day. Frankly I remember on the way back from my best late day Springsteen show in Hershey (back in May 2009 with Piscataway Mike and (Happy birthday) Brother Tom I was able to convince the brothers to stop for lunch/dinner on the way to the Allentown OTB (where I hit the exacta on the Preakness
and an Iron Pigs game and fireworks (we were one of 5 rows in the stadum not drenched by a bad storm).

We stopped at Cracker Barrel for a yummy meal and Cabelas (on I-78) was next door. I was FLOORED by the size fish tanks (like a mini aquarium) let alone the massive selection-esp with hunting and guns (even had a shooting range like they "used to" on the boardwalks). I bought a nice washable cabelas gym bag (replaced once since 2009 if that) I couldn't find elsewhere (if I ever reordered their website was top notch). I thought to myself inside (maybe even verbally spoke to Mike) that Cabelas dwarfs Effingers-and that if cab elas or similar came in near Effingers, the later would be in trouble. In recent years there was Dicks, Modells, Sports Authority (RIP),and even Walmart.

"Blood on your hands" ???
This months Drama Queen Award Winner!

Rutgers intramurals and rec used to buy there. We would go there with the Rec Directors, and like kids in a candy shop load up on equipment for the intramural seasons.

Was just there 2 months ago to buy my daughter a softball glove. Prices were higher every other store

Sport's Authority.... RIP... never heard of that place in the OP

now adays... Dick's for CO2 charging, Nike and Under Armor stores(JS outlets) and BASS PRO SHOP(in person or online) and Walmart

I used to go there too. Sad. I worked at Ray's Sporting Goods (RT. 22, N. Plainfield) while at RU (85 and 86). They closed down about 12 to 15 years ago I think. I have always wondered what happened to the long timers that worked there. They had worked there for 10 to 20 years (by 1985). Some of them only at Ray's. Ray was a hard working guy. He would walk around the store on occasion checking things out. His favorite question: "Whatchu doin' over dare?" RIP Efingers.

Got the same email this morning. Very sad to see it go. Seemed that a lot of their business was teams/education, if that dried up I am not surprised at this.

LC-did you work with an Arnie Gentile? Used to work out with him in Green Brook. Used to be a manager at Rays (I think) if that was the place. He was an avid fisherman who entered (and won?) several shark fishing contests such as "Mako Mania". I think later (maybe post Rays?) he worked as a charter boat captain out of Point Pleasant? Seemed to just disappear off the face of the earth.

Sad for sure. Great store. Huge supplier to team sports. I remember when they were on Main Street in the '60s and in deer season the killed deer were hanging outside on the sidewalk--different world.

I work nearby and would typically shop there about once every month or so. I got the email yesterday and stopped by last night to check out the sale. The place was packed. Wound up buying 2 bikes for wife and myself. It was a unique store (last of its kind) and I will miss it.

Sad. Here's my take. They're prices were only high compared to the Internet's. And, they were done in by the free riders of the Internet. People go to Effinger's to tryout equipment and then go home and buy it on the Internet at a discount. The huge space and employee overhead for the size of Effinger's operation was probably unsustainable in the face of the free-riding Internet economy.

Last month they were out of squid and didn't know when it was coming in right in the height of the fluke season. Thankfully, the Shop Rite had some. That surprised me. $$$$

Mom and Pop/Family-owned stores just don't stand a chance these days. Went to Efinger's a lot as a kid. Where I live now, a longtime mom/pop hardware/lumber store closed up several years ago and became a wholesale/contractor building supply store. Just a tenth of a mile away a Lowe's opened up a year after it closed.

Didn't know many last names, I was just a part timer. I did guns, reloading and "upstairs duty" - clothing and footware. There was a guy that worked fishing. About 6 feet, 230-250, light brown hair, always in a good mood. May have been Arnie.

My father was a florist and my wife's owned a couple of hardware stores. I doubt either would be doing that today. Times change and it is what it is. The real victim in what we see today is service.

Sad. Bought my first jar of salmon eggs there. Kinda shocked they lasted this long.

Speaking of old sport shops, anyone remember the literal hole in the wall Gabe's in NB? Used to ride my bike there. Good ole chubby Gabe had the biggest whiskey nose in central jersey.

Gabe's Sporting Goods had all kinds of stuff. I mostly went for fishing supplies, but he somehow fit everything in that LITTLE store. I think he even repaired some fishing reels. The store on French St was close enough to get to and it was before large shopping centers popped up.
Gabe was really a character.
The other store in NB at the time was Cheap John's Bargin Store. All kinds of sportsgear and clothing. Just a little out of the way on Memorial Pkwy.

Guilty of what? The world constantly changes and businesses must adapt. This is what happens when companies dont adapt.
