OT: Golf Thread

Just started a great two week stretch. Played the Ridge at Back Brook today, will play Trump National Philly on Friday (the old Pine Hill), the Ridge next Wednesday and Friday, then Mid-Ocean in Bermuda the following Wednesday. The best stretch I've even had the opportunity for. After commuting to NYC for three decades with leaving the house at 6:00 or 6:30 in the morning, returning usually 7 pm (except baseball season) many times getting home at 11 or midnight, I'm enjoying the other end of the trade off. I don't know if I could do it again but now seems worth it. Only wish my game was better...

So far, Ridge is by far my favorite course that I've had the opportunity to get on, enjoyed it more than Trump National (Bedminister), I'm hoping to get back on Ridge next month and going to play TPC Jasna Polana in a couple weeks, looking forward to that round but don't expect it to be up the level of Ridge.

What are the best public courses in north NJ?

I love all the Crystal Springs courses, Ballyowen is #1 for me but is expensive. A cheaper Ballyowen is High Bridge Hills. Big fan of Berkshire Valley in Jefferson as well.

If you're going to be up in Sussex County try Sky View in Sparta. The course is nice not the greatest but the view on 9 and 18 cannot be beat. Like standing on top of the world.

I'm playing at Ridge in August and looking forward to it. I had the opportunity to play at TPC Jasna Polana 3 times in the late 1990s. It was a gorgeous course. I assume it is still is. My favorite two holes were the first par 3 (3rd hole?), a downhill shot into a small target area and the par 5 on the back with a relatively short but sharp dogleg right where you hit the third shot over a ravine with water flowing out of the ground below the green. The clubhouse is magnificent -- it used to be one of the Johnson (of J&J fame) mansions.

Ridge is beautiful, fantastic clubhouse, this will be my first time playing TPC Jasna, so I'm looking forward to it.

I hesitate to say this but I can inquire about an outing at the Ridge. It would be limited since a member needs to be with each foursome so probabaly we're limited to 3 or 4 foursomes unless some other board posters, who are also members at the RIdge, want to jump in. Cost for greens fees exclusive of drinks and food is probably $150 per player or so. It's a special place. No promises but if we get enough feedback I'll investigate further.

Love ACCC. Get a caddy for the complete experience.

Played the Seaview Bay Course once. Very short and tight and not worth it to play IMO.

Twisted Dunes has always been a favorite, especially from the tips. The long par 3 on the back nine over a deep ravine is a classic hole.

Scotland Run in Williamstown is another favorite, as is Shoregate and Blue Heron Pines.

Loved Twisted Dunes. Hated Seaview Bay. Maybe the most overrated course I've ever played. Add to that even though we had a tee time well in advance they put an outing before us, never notifying us ahead of time so we could cancel and go somewhere else. We had to wait almost 2 hours. We then endured a 6 hour round on a poorly maintained course. Will never go back.

I've lost my low point, which for my entire life was instinctual with no thought process.
I'm now thinking about where my club head is and where my hands are, can't play that way.
A good analogy is where is your elbow when you throw a ball, if you try and put it where it should be, you can't throw.
Right now I suck! Started at 4 on my way to 6 and rising

An Addenda to my post about acing the 11th at Rutgers: I was alone when I made the HIO,but,a greenskeeper was just leaving in his golfcart before I hit. When I saw the ball was in the hole I yelled for him to come back to verify it. Never heard me. Next time I played there was a veritable club meeting on the Tee.Golf Architect ,greenskeeper and more. Just bustin' I asked them where they were when I needed them the prior time since I wanted a trophy. The Architect said that I would have to have been in a foursome for that to happen.Probably thought I was Bull shittin anyway. I went over to the grass tee ,flipped a ball down and put it 3 ft from the cup.Received the BEST compliment in all the years that I had played. The GA said" Very commercial". Still remember it and that was a loong time ago.

That's the problem with being a natural. I stunk from day one and now at 55 am around a 15 and it's the best I've ever been!

Assuming the rest of your game is hit or miss, but not terrible than the easiest way to lower your score is on the green. Stay away from anymore than 6-3 putt greens and you'll probably see immediate results. You can at least practice that part and find what works best for you.
I use to be a really good " lag " putter which really saved strokes because although I wouldn't make a lot of longer putts, I also very seldom 3 putted either. Didn't have to be on the green in regulation to still get a par and the mindset was the same way. But the better you get the margin for error decreases and it becomes harder to save strokes. If you can play to a 10 or less with limited rounds, you're a golfer. Don't over think the game and have some fun. Things just happen with age that are hard to correct.

golf is not a real sport. that's why old retired people play it lol. It's just like bowling or curling.

just golfed with a couple that told me they too were Rutgers alumni after noticing my RU standbag... 82' and 84' grads. asked them if they keep up RU Football? they said no, so convo stopped there

Played TPC Jasna Polana last Monday for work function. Shot decent , have been playing since my early teens but haven't been able to get out much these days with work, family , etc.

Only played 2 full rounds in the last 5. 6 or so years due to work and ongoing back issues. I can't chance getting hurt and not working.

When I was playing more often I finally felt like I had my game back to my teenage level after long layoffs on and off because of the back. I had my scores down in the mid 80's at some courses I had never played before like Dunes Club in SC.

would be awesome to have a scarlet nation outing at Ridge...that's some big time stuff there! ;)

So, can DJ finally win his first major or will Lowery stand up to the pressure? Almost everyone else is falling away. Barring complete collapses by Lowery (-6) and DJ (-4), someone will finish under par. I'm betting on DJ, actually, despite his history of not finishing well in majors.

Is there a US Open thread? Didn't notice one...

I'm in a US OPEN pool. Pick 4 players. Top 3 count. I have Lowry and Garcia who are both in the Top 5 right now but won't win because my other two, Snedeker and Rose, missed the cut.

Damn, that's bad luck. Furyk on his way to a 65 if he pars 18 and is -2, which will be quite a nice score to post, as it's hard enough out there that everyone else could drop to that level. Lowery at -5 after 7 and DJ at -4 after 8. Sergio also getting hot at -2 after 9, tied with Piercy. Gonna be a fun back 9 on this brutal course.

Love the tee shirt of the guy on the left in the green tee.

Looks like Dustin Johnson may get a 1 stroke penalty for possibly grounding (touching ) the ball when preparing to putt. The melt down a few years ago at Whistling Straights has to be weighing on his mind when he does something stupid again like this. They haven't adjusted the score yet, so maybe he didn't give himself a penalty after all..

On the 12th hole is has a 2 stroke lead over Lowery and 3 strokes over Garcia and Piercy. I love watching the Majors. Especially when I'm off all the next week for vacation ! lol. Leave for Orlando manana !.

He didn't cause the ball to move, although the ball did move slightly, after his practice strokes and when he was about to sole his putter behind the ball. This is bullshit by the USGA, having this possible 1-stroke penalty hanging over his head until the end of the round - no idea why they couldn't resolve this, live, when it was brought up. Tweets by Rory, Spieth, and many others saying this is nuts. And the announcers, while doing a decent job of talking about the implications, still haven't once made it clear whose decision it is after the round - is it the player's or the USGA's?

If he caused the ball to move it would not have moved backwards. USGA is bullshit.

Furyk bogeyed 18 to drop to -1, but with everyone else backing up and DJ's possible 1-stroke penalty still in play, believe it or not, Furyk isn't out of this yet, as DJ is at -4 (maybe -3), Lowery is at -3, and Piercy is at -2 (and Grace is at -1) and they all could drop to -1. Hmmmm.

USGA is a joke. If it's a penalty, just do it. We know it's coming and it's not fair to DJ.

Start drinking. You won't think of detail when you play.

Tour pros do not like the arrogant USGA.
Very true. As Azinger said, if this were a PGA tour event, the issue would've been over when the rules official asked DJ if he did anything to cause the ball to move and he answered no. But the USGA is so friggin' arrogant and snooty (I wanted to punch that guy they had on the air who made it sound like it should be a penalty) that they just had to make an issue out of it. The ball moved backwards maybe 1/8 of a rotation, while his putter was in the air behind the ball (wasn't grounded), so there's no way he caused it to move.

Oh man, what a shot on 18 by DJ! This one could be over, even with the penalty shot.

Wins the US Open and gets to go home to this, although we saw how meaningful it was to Tiger to have a really hot wife, lol...
