OT-ish: 2024-25 NCAAF Coaching Carousel

WVU will be the underdog this time. Pitt won't need to "run faster".
I did like Wanny comment when asked what Pitt will need to do to beat WVU "RUN FASTER". LOL I forgot about that comment until you mentioned it.

Pitt vs WVU will always be a game that will be a concern regardless of current record.

The 13-9 game preventing WVU from achieving their 1st National Championship will always be remembered by WVU and Pitt.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Is there any interest in Pitt's admin to play that game annually?

Joe didn't get a good mark, in fact looks pretty bad , especially what they said about his work as RU's DC
Belichick wasn't rated as good as I thought he would be and the #1 choice might be right, but was a surprise to me
# 10 was my pick for best hire

>16. Joe Harasymiak, Massachusetts

Harasymiak had a strong three-year run at the head coach at Maine from 2016-18 before leaving to become an assistant at Minnesota and then Rutgers. His defenses at Rutgers weren’t very good, though the Scarlet Knights have reached the postseason the past two years. Knowing the New England landscape is a major bonus.<

Revised history. I don't recall the first year but year two was a solid year for Harasymiak. This past season was beyond his control as the defense had too many injuries to recover.

What is this new General manager stuff. Does he work like an NFl GM and spend the season evaluating potential “free agents” ie portal kids.
I think it might depend on the person. I think it's part talent evaluation and leading the evaluation staff, part "cap managment" but both not necessarily handled by the same person. In some instances maybe yes it's the same person and in others maybe separate people handle those issues.

IIRC, Greg may have alluded to the fact that Eric Josephs handles this role for Rutgers. Could be mistaken and it could be someone else. He went into detail in one presser about how they are on this all the time and keep a spreadsheet of potential targets, etc.

I need to read up on him but on paper that’s a great hire for UMass
He was a GA at Rutgers in 1998-99.
He was OC for Butch Jones at Cincinnati and Tennessee
2019- OC for Addazio at BC
2020-23 OC at Northwestern

These position coaches and OCs are true nomads. Agree he's a good get for UMass.

This article might explain your question and it seems like since 2006 College Football programs had General Managers , just called them Director of Player Personnel :
>And to think, positions like his didn't exist not that long ago. There was no college football equivalent of the NFL front office to oversee recruiting and roster management. No one called themselves a director of player personnel (DPP) until a clever assistant created the title in 2006 and one of the greatest head coaches of all-time noticed what it was and what it could be.
Now, college football can't function without DPPs like Pantoni. Some have even embraced the broader and more recognizable title of general manager, like High and Suddes.
In addition to high school recruiting, they oversee another important avenue to acquire talent: the transfer portal, which is college football's version of free agency. It's up to the heads of personnel departments to keep their ears to the ground and their eyes on the portal, pointing coaches toward players they should be targeting.<

A name I've been hearing is Tim Beck the Vanderbilt OC.
He did an exceptional job there in 2024 and has been a HC at the Division II level with a 82-35 record as a head coach at Pittsburg State, including a Division II National Championship in 2011.
He was New Mexico State's OC and help them win 10 games in 2023.
Jerry Kill hired him in 2022 and they improved NM St from a program that was 8=30 the previous 4 years to a 7-6 team in Kill's first year there

The contract between Pitt and WVU to play the "Backyard Brawl" goes until 2032, although there may be a few gap years we don't play.

One of the oldest college football games that started in 1895.

HAIL TO PITT!!!!

Man, the first time I saw this guy’s defense in Washington State, I thought it was incredible.

Lots of movement, stunts, & pressure packages.

He was once a rising star.
Yea and he was going alongside Leach’s Air Raid, not an easy thing to do.

He did improve a porous OU defense to get it to about average before it plateaued and went backward a bit. USC was just bad.

Coaches have ups and downs in their careers so who knows what the future holds.

And sometimes coordinators are held back by their head coaches. As we know, a head coach can put parameters around their coordinators and how they run the offense or defense. Recall a few comments Longo made in interviews about that was the way Fickell wanted to do it. But the boss is the boss. Some give their coordinators free reign, others don't. But when their is friction and disagreement, it usually never ends well for the coordinator.

SI reported :
FootballScoop stated that former Mississippi State head coach Zach Arnett was in line to accept a defensive coordinator position at Appalachian State, but it now seems that new UNLV head coach Dan Mullen has swayed his destination.
