Cubs are making moves to win it all.
Still not sure about their pitching, after Arrieta, Lester and Lackey.
Bullpen has big questions.

Overrated player IMO - never been as good as he was supposed to be. If the Mets signed Zobrist to that ridiculous contract they would get absolutely killed in the press - they were starting to get killed when people thought he was coming to Mets. The Cubs are applauded because they're going for it and he's a winning player. Huge media bias.

Well they got a good one from the Yanks in Adam Warren.
IMO he should never have been taken out of the rotation when Nova came back.
Warren did well here as a starter and as a reliever. I wish the Yanks had kept him.
Not sure how the Cubbies are gonna use him.

The Heyward signing may be one of the worst signings of all time.

For the past 2 years playing full (non injury) seasons - he has averaged 12 homers and 60 rbi's.....

Big deal.........

Furthermore, Lackey and Zobrist are old.....so could care less about them as well......

The reason he got this money is that he's only 26 and getting paid for his prime years. Most free agency deals pay players past their prime, so his best years are ahead of him. He's also excellent defensively and as a base runner.

As a diehard Cards fan (lived in The Lou for 10 years) thanks for 2015 JH. But now "bite me". You and Lackey can rot in Chi-town.

Epstein is a Sabermetrics idiot - Heyward is a Sabermetrics wet dream.

What these guys dont realize is Billy Beane - had Zito, Mulder and Hudson - thats why he won.

$23mm per year for a guy that has never scored 100 runs, batted in 100 runs, hit 30 homers or hit .300. He just looks like a slightly above average player across the board.
Agreed. I looked at his stats, they are meh. Seriously don't understand the contract here.

I understand your point however Heyward is not an impact player and I don't think ever will be - thus it's a grossly overpaid contract - for which the Cubbies will regret.

Theo did this once before with the Red Sox signing several players to sickening contracts such as Carl Crawford and he was lucky to trade them to other teams after 2-3 years or so.

I am no way a Cubs fan but I don't like any of their moves this off season:

- Grossly overpaid for a slightly better than average player of that
- Signed aging vets in Lackey and Zobrist
- Traded Starlin Castro for a mediocre pitcher (Warren)

I wish the mets would have made a play for Castro instead of Walker. I thought the Yanks stole him from the Cubs particularly given his contract situation.

Heyward is essentially Brett Gardner. I love Gardie but he isn't a $23 million player

Bill James once said, from his analysis, David Wright is the best baseball player in MLB. David Wright is the most overrated player in MLB history as far as I'm concerned and I'm a die hard Mets fan.

The Yanks are starting to be more responsible. I love that they let Cano walk. His past two years in Seattle have been only okay. That may turn out to be one of the worse contracts in the history of baseball.

I would not be surprised to see Cano back with the Yanks in the next year or two with Seattle covering $10M per year

There have been reports that Cano doesn't like Seattle and really missed NY. Too bad, you chose the money, which is fine, but you can't now start whining about it afterwards.

With the amount of TV money flowing through baseball right now, just about every free agent contract seems like an overpay. I don't think this is a bad move by the Cubs. They are a big market team with a core that will have a chance at winning the world series for the next few years. They should be going for it.

I also believe I heard that Heyward had offers of $200M+ from two other teams. Which makes me think (unless he took less money) that the Cubs were willing to pay more per year in order to keep the # of the years on the contract down. Which is smart IMO. Not only will they be paying for his prime years, but when they get to the point where they have to start juggling money to pay for some of their young core guys, he will only be on the books for a couple more years.

Naah, Heyward is a great defensive outfielder too. But this contract is too much for what he has done to this point. I wonder where he will hit in that lineup.

Lackey will fall off this season for sure. Last year was the best he will be going forward.

The Mets trading Niese for Walker is so much better than signing a giant Zobrist contract would've been.
