Went to see Love and Mercy today and it is a terrific movie.

Granted, I am huge Brian WIlson and Beach Boys fan - but if you are any fan of either or even just of music - I strongly recommend the movie.

Bit of a Spoiler: It's a not a flick about pre Pet Sounds and the greatest hits type of movie - but focuses in on the turmoil of Brian WIlson from the Pet Sounds Days to his freedom from Dr. Landy.

Terrific acting by Paul Dano - who played the young Brian Wilson ; John Cusack - who played the older Brian Wilson - and Paul Giammatti - who played Dr. Landy. Also Elizabeth Banks wasn't bad to look at as well.

Wouldn't It have been Nice if Brian could have been understood better by his bandmates - especially his ahole cousin Mike Love and if mental illnesses could have been diagnosed better back in the late 60's....

You left out the role of Murray Wilson in contributing to Brian's debilating emotional condition. Despite that tremendously destructive influence, Brian ascended professionally, leaving an amazing and highly influential body of work, for which many are grateful.

As for Mike Love, he was a limited talent (and he likely knew this) and that got in the way. The movie captures that pretty effectively.

Ultimately it is a story/movie about personal triumph and the essential role of love and mercy (via Melinda).

Saw it in Paramus on Friday. It was an awesome movie. Felt sorry for Brian Wilson. The abuse he suffered was unbelievable.

Not a huge Beach Boys fan, but definitely interested to see this movie.

Also interested in seeing this movie. I'm a huge Paul Giamatti fan although I'm sure that I won't like the character he plays in this one.

I also would like to see this movie but I'm not sure that I agree with the commercials for it that call Brian Wilson the greatest American composer.

"..... but I'm not sure that I agree with the commercials for it that call Brian Wilson the greatest American composer."

Not sure ? I can't stop laughing every time I hear that one.
Yeah, he was California's Bob Dylan. [jumpingsmile]
I'm joking with that one of course. Wilson was as much America's greatest composer as Gary Nova was college football's greatest quarterback.

I listen to the Beach Boys as a change of pace type thing once in a while. They had some really good songs. Brian Wilson was very talented and the "Pet Sounds" album is critically acclaimed. They were kind of chasing The Beatles in the early days and "Pet Sounds" got The Beatles attention for sure. There was a tv mini series some years ago about The Beach Boys. Their old man really came off as a borderline wack job that really helped screw up Brian Wilson..as well as the other brothers. Ironic that for all his personal problems , Brian is the only brother from the band still alive.

Went to the movies yesterday with 3 options, Spy, Love & Mercy and Aloha. After viewing the trailers I chose to see Aloha which turned out to be a nice movie. My second choice would have been Love & Mercy with Spy as my third choice. I totally wrote off San Andreas off the list because that type of movie is not appealing to me. Hopefully, I'll get to see Love & Mercy before it's out of the theaters.

I'm also a Giammati fan, his role in 'Sideways' was terrific. Did you know his father, Bart Giammatti (sp?), was the commissioner of Major League Baseball for a while. Quite unpopular.

Also interested in seeing this movie. I'm a huge Paul Giamatti fan although I'm sure that I won't like the character he plays in this one.

Saw an interview with Mike Love and Brian Wilson on Jimmy Fallons show - Mike had lots of good things to say about Brian, basically calling him a genius....
