NASCAR is a great example of a business that should have stayed in their lane.
Daytona 500 once was an epic event and NASCAR was followed by millions and growing in popularity. Then they make change after change in attempt to become a national super sport. It's been a disaster. Started moving to so many night races and screwing you super loyal fan base the it was Sunday at 1pm. Then the move races to other days and times. Then they begin change so many rules it its unrecognizable.
The 500 used to be whoever rode 500 miles and crossed the line first won. I had no idea it was even on yesterday. Never saw the endless commercials promoting it on Fox this year. Just a few. Only to see on the morning news the winner won in double overtime (what the hell is that?) And was "declared" the winner by officials based on where he was after a crash.
Does anyone watch it anymore?

I grew up and was a big NASCAR guy until about 10-15 years ago. Daytona 500 was always a big deal. I watched it along with the golf yesterday. NASCAR killed their sport with common templates, restrictor plate racing & no personality drivers. Once they went with the playoff's, it was all downhill from there.

I watched a bit. NJ's Martin Truex was doing pretty good till he got hung up in a crash.

I've said I think NASCAR lost a lot of luster when Dale Jr, Gordon, and Stewart retired all around the same time.
That didn't help, add in the guy I followed Rusty Wallace.

Earnhardts death got me interested because at the time it was just so impactful and I could not help but tune in and root for Junior. But when Jimmy Johnson became so dominant I lost my interest.

I’ve watched NASCAR on and off for decades. I was always more of an open wheel race fan, Indy car and Formula 1 racing. I think NASCAR’s move to make the sport more open and diverse is commendable. However I do not like the new race structure rules with race segments, how the champion gets decided, etc.

A decade or so I tried to watch racing to have a spring sport (my Knicks fandom having been exterminated in 1995). NASCAR was too Hee-Haw and Formula 1 too predictable with Ferrari, Red Bull and Mercedes enjoying long streaks. So my fire never got lit.

I saw NASCAR making local gains in popularity but then I saw NASCAR became a target of the cultural Maoists (the same way the Boy Scouts and Amish were) and knew they would self-immolate and they have

I lost interest after Richard Petty hung 'em up, and Davey Allison lost his life. I guess I missed "the rise" but also the "tragic fall". What's a restrictor plate?

NASCAR and "Country" Music are nothing like their originals. Commercialization takes its toll via greed and opportunists, way more often than not.

Brian France (the poster boy for why nepotism is bad) royally f'ed up the sport. Stages are stupid. Overtime is stupid. Current point system designed to artificially create drama is stupid.

Add to the fact that most of the interesting and likable drivers all retired and have been replaced with no-name cookie cutter whiners.

Watched yesterday for first time in years. Boring until the "overtime". Mutually assured destruction. Overall an uninteresting display of 2 lanes of traffic traveling at 190 mph.

I saw some of that race in the LA coliseum about a year ago and said to myself “ You gotta be kidding me”

They trying to get a green flag finish instead of winning under yellow

Green flag, white flag, checker flag
Yesterday the got no flags. The winner was declared, he was on the other side of the track. He was the leader just before the caution was called. Meanwhile three of them were clear of the accident behind them. They should have let them race to the finish!
Like the 1979 race. There was a crash but they slid off the track, no caution. When NASCAR was the best.

They do one attempt at a green white checker once the white flys.

Once the white flys next flag ends it.

If there is a yellow before the white then they do it again

They didn't yesterday. The 2nd overtime was called before they got on the front side. It was based on the last caution and who was in the lead just before the caution. All 3 of them slowed down on the front stretch because it was already over.

The caution flew after the white

When that happens the field is frozen at the time of the caution and positions based on that

Ends under yellow anyway. And all these changes were made by the TV people. Fox created the playoff system in like 05 when it got the second half of the season but the championship was pretty much already decided and interest was down

Absolutely stupid. No one there knew who won ever after they crossed the line. Even the pit crews. Win it at the end of 500 miles period. Overtime in racing. No wonder they keep losing fans.

Most NASCAR fans like the green white checker but the stages and playoffs not so much.

They rather have a chance to end a race on the track with a green instead of a three lap yellow checker…

I don't believe the former loyal fanbase like the setup at all today. Starting in 2005 attendance was falling. So much so that beginning in 2014 NASCAR stop giving attendance numbers. The changes went against what fans loved about the sport. Bristol used have 2 races a year with waiting list for both. You can now buy tickets on raceday.

More to it than on the track issues

Expense is one issue

And from what I know fans rather a green white checker than a caution with four laps to go and the leader take the checker under a yellow

So you think NASCAR is doing a good job?

I used to work with a guy who went to Bristol every August iirc with three other dudes. He got the tickets like a year ahead of time. They stayed some ridiculous distance away, 50 miles or so iirc because everything closer was sold out. They packed into one room with 2 beds. I always found that funny. I used to joke with him you guys rub hairy legs during the night? He’s like no we got pillows between us. Not my idea of a fun trip. This was probably circa 2006. He stopped going shortly after that.

I've been to many small tracks in the area. Wall Stadium The former Englishtown for the Summer Nationals. Bridgeport and NJ Motorsports Park in Millville. My current favorite is Atco. Great atmosphere.

Atco is drag racing and Bridgeport is dirt oval for those that don’t know.

Reconfigured few years ago to high banking which made better racing.

Look for the car with the block R. 😉

The Bristol night race was always an event. Usually right when college football started. Was one of my favorite races and attended back in the 90’s. One of those “must see” bucket trips.

For those that think we need a stupid overtime. Just race back to the line:

What so terrible about that? Today it would take an overtime. SMH
Agreed! If there is a bad wreck 5 or more laps to the end, red flag it. But there should never ever be laps added to a race. Just stupid.

Shoulda done it this way:

Stock cars have idiotic and nonsensical overtime periods. I know it's everyone's latest lament and should have some tweaks. Racing is not getting exciting results

Tango,

I grew up going to East Windsor on Fridays and Sundays and Flemington on Saturdays starting at 5 years old. Once i became a teenager I worked on many different cars from locally to the Super Dirt Series and for the last 15 years or so have worked for my favorite driver all those years Jimmy Horton. It's not what it was back in the 70s and 80s but it is still way better than the product NASCAR puts out. After living in NJ all my life I moved to my farm in Iowa 5 years ago and now only get back to help Jimmy for most of the bigger races. I loved the big track at Bridgeport but can't argue with the great racing on the new track. Hopefully it will be even better this year with the new clay that just went down a few weeks ago.
