Here is the entire list of penalties announced by the NCAA on Thursday:

  • Public reprimand and censure for the university.
  • Four years of probation from June 15, 2017, through June 14, 2021.
  • A suspension from the first five ACC games of the 2017-18 season for the head coach. During the suspension, the head coach may not be present in the arena where the games are played and have no contact with the student-athletes or members of his coaching staff. The head coach also may not participate in any activities including, but not limited to, team travel, practice, video study and team meetings.
  • A 10-year show-cause period for the former operations director from June 15, 2017, through June 14, 2027. During that period, any NCAA member school employing the former coach must restrict him from holding any athletically related duties and from having any contact with prospects and their families.
  • A one-year show-cause order for the former program assistant from June 15, 2017, through June 14, 2018. During that period, any NCAA member school employing him can schedule an appearance before a panel of the COI to determine whether he should be subject to show-cause provisions.
  • A vacation of basketball records in which student-athletes competed while ineligible from December 2010 and July 2014. The university will provide a written report containing the games impacted to the NCAA media coordination and statistics staff within 45 days of the public decision release.
  • A reduction in men's basketball scholarships by two during the 2016-17 year (self-imposed by the university). Additionally, the university must reduce men's basketball scholarships by four over the probation period. The university may take the reductions during any year of that period.
  • A prohibition of men's basketball coaching travel during the April 2016 recruiting period, which resulted in a reduction of men's basketball recruiting opportunities by 30 (self-imposed by the university).
  • A reduction of recruiting travel during the July 2016 recruiting period by six days (self-imposed by the university).
  • A reduction in the number of men's basketball official visits to a total of 10 during the 2015-16 year. Additionally, the university will have no more than a total of 16 visits during the 2016-17 and 2017-18 years (self-imposed by the university).
  • During the probation period, men's basketball prospects on unofficial visits may not stay overnight in any campus dorms or school-owned property.
  • A disassociation of the former operations director (self-imposed by the university). The public decision describes the details of his disassociation.
  • A $5,000 fine (self-imposed by the university). The university must also return to the NCAA the money received through conference revenue sharing for its appearances in the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championships. Future revenue distributions that are scheduled to be provided to the university from those tournaments also must be withheld by the conference and forfeited to the NCAA.
  • A postseason ban for the men's basketball team for the 2015-16 season (self-imposed by the university).

While it's still a slap in the wrist, one of the nice things on this punishment list is the coach being suspended for the first bunch of conference games rather than games against the likes of Prairie View A&M.
Thought RU's proposed self-imposed penalties were too much for the gravity of the violations and because RU fired all of the bad actors.

With this punishment we should hire escort's. The NCAA just validated the use. If you get caught big deal, vacate some wins, pay $5,000, coach can't coach for 5 games and lose 2 scholarships for a year. Big whoop. The advantage you've gained in player recruitment is tremendous and you won't skip a beat if caught. Where's Mildone at? We need to get this program started ASAP.

Five grand! How will Looserville expense Scumbag's restaurant meals? [roll]

How much is this stuff worth in $$$?

I think the revenue gained by having sold out arenas, boosters pumping money in and apparel deals should easily cover it. Who knows how many player's were swayed? And with out them what the records would look like.

The money thing never works for schools like this. You have to hit them where it counts in competitive disadvantage. Otherwise, the gravy train is going to keep rolling.

Didn't they win the championship in 2013. That's vacated?
I must be reading this wrong .

Again, these are not true student athletes. They are very young NBA players who could care less about Louisville or the NCAA. Coaches throughout the country are unfortunately getting more and more creative on how to attract these kids. I'm sure the prostitute saw a golden opportunity and divulged the story for a sum of money. It's only a matter of time where stories like this become common place in college athletics. There is way too much money at stake and everyone wants a piece of the pie.

Wait a second here. So your calling hiring prostitutes for 17 and 18 yr. old's creative? Come on, you have to have some sense of a human moral standard.

I do, I personally think it's disgusting. However, it doesn't mean that it's not happening. Personally speaking I don't think you could stop it at this point unless you create a minor league for BB. Go that route and you'll see some athletic departments closing their doors.

Ehhh- I don't know...True story, Sitting down with Schiano in his office back before the 2009 season, my better half suggested he do it for the kids so that they could get there head in the game and stop letting GF's screw them up.Greg actually laughed and said that may be a great idea...little did we all know that a GF would change the course of our QB'ing over the next 4 years. hahahahah

What a joke. Rick deserved the show cause as well. Not even a one year post season ban? We will probably get the death penalty.

What is the argument now if they come back in 2 years and say look how clean we are...is everything reinstated?

You can only hire hookers if you're an elite program.

This will be the type of penalty UNC gets, maybe lose a few schollies over a long period. And pay a few dollars. Smaller programs without resources to fight back will continue to get the worst of the penalties.

There is little to deter big programs from cheating. You can blame all the University Presidents for not caring. The NCAA is their organization.

I think the title of this thread should be edited a bit. I took it to mean that he was suspended from being their coach, period, not just for 5 games, which really doesn't count for much. He'll still be running the program throughout that period.

RU suspended Flood for 3 games, IIRC, which is one fourth of the season. A 5 basketball game suspension is only about one seventh of a season.

If it was SMU that hired the hookers, there'd be more than just a slap on the wrist. Unless the hookers were mild ones.

A preview of things to come for UNC. But their scheme was ongoing for much longer so their penalties should be worse. Something along the lines of Roy Williams has to take a mandated pee break once each half at the Duke game and pay $5003 in restitution.

Things like this were happening way more in the past than now - it just never got out like it does now.
Football recruiting visits were a freekin circus prior to the internet explosion of the early 2000's.

Coaches used to party with players all the time... strip clubs, bars, drinking at the football facility, etc.

Everything is different now.

Litigious society has gone out of hand.

An RU parent told this to me years ago at a Frank Burns practice that we were watching. His son was on the team. On a recruiting trip that they took, he was alone in their hotel room. The kid was at the team's facilities with some coaches. There was a knock on the door and a lovely young lady asked to come in. She was sent there to take care of Daddy and hopefully he would influence his son's decision. He never did say whether he took advantage of the hospitality call,.

Way to give nj . com their story of a lifetime to help Rutgers get the super duper double death penalty from something that happened decades ago.

He didn't say it was while on a recruiting trip to Rutgers, just that it occurred on a recruiting trip.

What's ironic is that in the midst of all this corruption Louisville is being picked as a solid final 4 team in the NCAA tourney next year. I didn't know they were that loaded.

That was just a misunderstanding. She was no hooker, that was the position coach's wife's sister just showing some of that famous Southern hospitality.

This is how we should handle those pesky Rutgers hating Uncles.

Pitino and Louisville got off lightly. Unfortunately it appears that while being well meaning the NCAA seems to have lost its clout or even is less severe when dealing with the big boys. I guess a better word or view would be hypocritical. If only some of the college presidents would have the guts to get together and step up to the plate and say whoa what's going on here and take a closer look at college athletics. If not it is not beyond some folks in congress to try to do this given the recent nature of political actions.

Maybe they will review Trump University teams...but I forget I am not sure frisbee and female watching are recognized NCAA sports.
