OT: NJ Devils 2024-2025 Thread

Unfortunately, it'll be him and Kovacevic that come out of the lineup when Hughes and Pesce return. Though it's not because they deserve a demotion.
Someone proposed both Casey and Nemec going down to Utica.

I would have thought it unimaginable, but Kova has played well, and plays a heavy defensive role.

And despite the offense of Casey, he and Nemec has posted some lousy possession numbers early, despite playing very easy minutes.

My daughter (9) and I did a doubleheader of UCLA and the Devils game yesterday. Pretty sure both forgot to play defense. Thankfully Nico carried them to a point.

With that said, the experience at the Rock was so much more enjoyable and entertaining for her than Rutgers stadium. Entertainment in time outs, light show, band on the concourse, etc. Plus pricing comparable. They did a real good job and will likely see more of my $.

Devils game despite the loss, and despite the lack of defense, was a lot of fun in terms of game action. 11 total goals, 2 multi goal comebacks, and a high flying OT. Good to hear you enjoyed the game.

I do think the Devils tightened up in the 3rd. New coach, new system, there is an adjustment period, so a game like this, where they tighten up as they go, I see as a positive.

I also thought Hughes looked the best he has all season in the 3rd and in OT. And he is the key for the Devils. If he can get back to super star level then we are in the group of top teams in the league.

Apparently Pesce and Hughes were full skaters at practice either yesterday or Friday. Hoping their returns also help tighten up the D. Casey going down is an easy choice. Be interesting what Keefe does between Nemec and Kovacivic as Kov has been getting more ice time and looked good with Sigenthaler.

I heard this was a non contact practice?

But I would think Pesce is pretty close, Hughes a little further off.

Devils ‘await’ response from NHL for controversial penalty in loss against Lightning

I was up there last night. That was some good booing. Absolutely blunted the Devils’ momentum. Would’ve loved to have seen how things would’ve played out had that garbage not been called. But they’re also free to not allow TB hang 8 on them.

Newark Devils still look small and soft. Played a tough team and got steamrolled.

One cup since the end of WW2. And you're still a douchebag hockey fan I see
Don't get mad at the messenger. Just giving you the honest facts. Don't know why size and toughness wasn't addressed in the offseason.

Those aren't the honest facts though. They addressed both size and toughness in the offseason.
  • Brenden Dillon - 6'4" - 225 lbs - 10th in NHL hits last year
  • Paul Cotter - 6'2" - 213 lbs - 17th in NHL hits last year
  • Jonathan Kovacevic - 6'5" 223 lbs
  • Stefan Noesen - 6'1" - 205 lbs

Make it 19 goals against in the last 3 games. It's obviously very early, but there's no sugar-coating how poor the goaltending has been again:

Markstrom: 3-3-1
  • GAA: 3.15
  • Save Pct: .891
  • Goals Saved Above Expected: -4 (65th in NHL)

Allen: 2-1-0
  • GAA: 3.01
  • Save Pct: .880
  • Goals Saved Above Expected: -0.2 (36th in NHL)
New system, fluctuating defensive personnel - I get it. Make a save.

How Dave Rogalski has lasted into a 4th coaching regime in NJ is beyond me.

Allen is mediocre, but those numbers are kind of how Markstrom is.

You will get some stretches where he plays at an elite level, then he goes through some games where he isn’t that good, but overall his numbers will end up pretty good.

The good news with the Devils is that there is likely a stretch of exceptional Markstrom games coming after how he started.

Nine games into the season and you already can't help being an asshole
Not sure if you show it but he had some really bad takes in the Yankees thread .. called out Staton… then Judge.. then the Yankees heart. Take it all with a grain of salt.

Looks like we have 3 lines that can score . Just need to iron out this defense and goaltending . Besides the first goal vs Anaheim they’ve been playing much better . Hopefully this trend continues .

I’m here tonight.

The assists by Jack were amazing. His vision is next level.
First goal was off the charts.

But he is buzzing tonight. Good game to go to.......but need to a strong 3rd period.

So, while waiting on line for my ice cream...🍦, I was behind the play on Jack's goal. Could see the whole thing play out. Pretty cool. You could just tell it was going to happen.

He did a move where the Canadiens defenseman was just...I don't know. LOL

Happy Ice Hockey GIF by NHL

Another great game by Jack . Boys dug deep and pulled one out . Great day for NJ sports
Jack, after a slow start to the season, is really heating up.

Some break downs by the D, maybe a soft goal in there by Markstrom, and some high level goal tending by Sorokin, but Devils still eeked it out. Very nice win.

Nice goal but 3 on 3 OT is so stupid. I hate it and to me it's a gimmick. Either play 5 on 5 or just end with the tie. Season is long enough.
3v3 is good fun. A fine way to find a winner in a regular season game.

The shootout on the other hand, can go the way of the dodo.

I'd prefer 5 v 5 and if it ends in a tie, so be it.

Agree on the shoot out. 👎

I love the 3 on 3. And we use it all the time for coaching examples, because the pros have learned how to overexaggerate puck possession over everything else in order to absolutely maximize their scoring opportunities. Getting younger kids to think in that manner (that you should use creativity to maximize every possession, rather than just trying to take a random shot) can be hard.

It’s good for that scenario but to determine W/L is cheap. Devalues the product.

We need a small adjustment with the 3×3 OT - when you enter the offensive zone, you can't purposely exit it to reset, you gotta stay in the zone.

I get it, but I don't think it's necessary, and thus don't feel the need to add new rules.

3v3 is a ton of fun as is. Just let it roll.
