OT: NJ Gov't to shut down #1 Disc Golf course in NJ

My god did a group of frisbee throwing hippies just put enough pressure on NJ politicians to solicit change???

Yes we did! Amazing!

This was posted on the SJ disc golfer's FB page by Finlay Buchanan-Jacobs (the author of the petition), with a nice pic of him and Bill Green (owner of the winery) shaking hands. Good signs all around.

"Just completed a productive meeting with Bill Green. I’m left hopeful for the future and confident that we can find a way to make things work. Expect a full statement soon."

Some good news, as the NJDEP, today, announced that they would not force Voorhees Twp to close and remove the Stafford Woods disc golf course there, which is the #1 ranked course in NJ and a personal favorite of mine and many others (I'm playing in a tourney there on Saturday), as per the excerpt and link below.

This only came about through the leadership of some dedicated disc golfers who worked with local politicians in Voorhees to convince the NJDEP to reconsider their plan to close the course; also, the letters/emails from several thousand disc golfers to the DEP and politicians helped - democracy in action. The NJDEP's plan seems fairly reasonable, involving restoration of some trees and bushes and removal of pallets, woodpiles, tents, tables and chairs, but allowing the course to largely remain.

You finally got something right. You are nobody.

Idk. Doesn't losing so many races and having several handles on this board make him somebody? How about being doppleganger for Kevin from the Office if he gained a lot of weight?

A loser of a somebody, but a somebody nonetheless.

Thank you for posting this and hope you did well today!

As you’re planning trips this summer I’m gonna give you a new course that needs to go on your radar, it’s called ‘Agape Farm’ out in central Pa.

It’s the best course I’ve ever played in over 200 played. It blows Maple Hill away… THAT good

Super well funded course with tremendous amenities. Hot showers after the round and modest hotel lodging on site for $30 a night. The property hosts a massive Christian music festival each year called ‘Creation’ which is where they get their funding and without exaggeration they probably put $100k into the course already

Thanks, had a good tourney, playing really well and played another tourney today at FDR Park in Westchester County, NY (excellent long/hilly course) and did decently there too. 4 rounds in 2 days with 5 hours of driving and two late nights out seeing bands might've been a bit too much, though - will sleep well tonight, lol.

I had heard Agape Farm was really good - will have to take a road trip. 10,956' is really long, so surprised par 70 only plays to about 945 (just looked at one tourney), whereas Iron Hill at 10,500 feet plays to about 990 for par. Speaking of hard courses, have you played the Grove yet (in Manalapan)? It's a couple of years old and it's just brutal, but in a fun way. It's "only" 8600', but it's par 65 and 80% of the holes are incredibly tight, wooded holes with serious jail just off the fairways. Par plays to about 1000. I like Iron Hill, Stafford and the Grove all more than Maple Hill, fwiw.

I agree with you on Iron Hill and Stafford above Maple Hill.

haven’t gotten to the Grove (in Manalappan), yet but will need to make the trip up.

Iron Hill is one of my all time favorites, not disrespect to Stafford but I like Iron Hill more. Agape is a different class, it’s an absolute Masterpiece. Hole 5 is the most remarkable par 5 I think that exists in disc golf (sprinkle valley 18 is whatever, and I would 100% have iron hill hole 17 on my dream 18)…. I just can’t say enough about Agape. I’ve played 6 Houck courses now including Parc de Fam in New Orleans and the old W.R. Jackson (RIP), Agape is imo his masterpiece. If Houck is the Pete Dye of Disc Golf course design, Agape Farm is his Whistling Straights. It was a privilege to play.

Lake Marshall is maybe the only comparable property I’ve seen.

The Grove is brutal. When we played it in 2023 it was impossible with knee high grass on parts of the fairways. It took us a full half hour to play 15, one of the long holes on the back. We played the Blue tees, over 8,500 and 23 over won. It has to be easier now that they shortened the tees.

Great course, doe.

See knee high grass doesn’t sound fun at all lol.

We played Agape Blue’s which came in at just under 11,000 ft (10,962). I shot +5 blind and while I don’t have an active pdga mg rating normally floats around 960. My buddy who has been playing for 10 years not as seriously but still who was with me shot +38.

I wouldn’t say Agape is ‘Harder’ than Iron Hill, it’s different. Iron Hill is 18 holes of pure woods golf where if you take a bad tree kick you can end up in rough where your only play is a pitch out or crazy escape. It’s very easy to have a blowup hole or two at Iron Hill where as Agape all the lines are there, they just require well executed shots.

Faylor lake is another great course about an hour from Agape. The pro’s will be there (Faylor) this year for the GK pro tour. If you have an itch for a tremendous Disc golf weekend make the trip out and play Faylor one day and Agape the next. I still rank Agape ahead of Faylor but Faylor is probably better than Stafford to me (Longer for sure) and has some of the most incredible ‘Top of the world’ shots you will ever see

The town now mows the fairways, although off the fairways can get overgrown, but we do some weed whacking around tourneys. October thru April is best generally. I'm around 910 and my best at the Grove is +5 which is around 970. If you like brutally hard wooded courses it's a must. Faylor is on my list...

Brutal woods eh? +5 970 almost seems gimmicky, though I love a course that prioritizes hitting the gap. Really Iron Hill is pretty much perfect when it comes to ‘Woods Golf’ imo. I like FDR a lot and Warwick up that way so will definitely check it out.

In the Faylor Lake/Agape trip the other lesser known but must play in that general area is Pinchot Park’s Quakers Challenge. First played it back in 2019 during Am Workds and lord have mercy that rough…. That course is sorta like playing Iron Hill but on the side of a mountain. Hole 3 at Quake is to this day the only par 6 in disc golf I’ve seen. Don’t bother with Codorus or any of the other Am worlds courses from that time besides maybe Muddy Run which is worth the play.

The Grove's long tight lines make Iron Hill look like a treeless course. It's also 1005 par with no elevation or water, just long, difficult woods shots. Some people hate it, some love it - I'm in the latter camp.

Speaking of NJ Government, our own Jersey guy, Senator Cory Booker, is getting close to breaking the record (held by the racist POS, Strom Thurmond, filibustering his protest of the Civil Rights Act of 1957, for 24 hrs and 17 minutes) for longest speech ever in the Senate and it looks like he'll set a new record in about an hour. Regardless of one's politics, it's an impressive performance, as he has been energetic, lucid, well-informed and occasionally funny, and while he's been critical of the current Administration, which is not a surprise for a dem, he has spoken highly of a number of Republican Senators, past and even present (especially John McCain). And he has given a ton of shout outs to people, places, and products from/in NJ - including just noting that M&M's were invented in Newark and correcting Senator Schumer on there only being one NY State football team - Buffalo, since the Giants and Jets are NJ teams. So now this is sports related, lol.

This will get locked now but kudos to Senator Booker and you for drawing attention to it. 😎

I tend to love those types of places. It sounds like Paw Paw. That’s exciting!

Let’s keep this discussion disc golf although I am enjoying Booker’s real life rendition of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington lol.

Have you been out to Green Monster yet in Allentown?

I like narrow wooded courses because, now that I'm in my early 60s, I obviously can't throw as far as I used to, so they neutralize the distance advantage to some extent. People who try to throw 400' on such holes often get into serious trouble off the fairway, while some straight 250-300' shots will often do better. Plus, I just like the challenge of fitting shots to narrow fairways.

Oh dude I’m 36 and play MPO, you’re preaching to the choir! Lol

Some of these kids around me are friggan rubber bands and whip their discs 500’+.

Now fortunately most of them still haven’t learned how to putt or hit a gap so I can still show them a thing or two in the woods. But that’s all I have now until I’m 40 and can play age protected. It’s funny I’ve got about 425’ flat ground backhand and 375’ on a forehand and once was considered a ‘Big Thrower’ in my region…. God how times have changed, lol
