Tommy Agee first one to come to mind.Tyler Zuber may not be long for the Mets, but he just broke a record that has stood for all of Mets history.
That "record", such as it is, is that among all Met players in history, Zuber is last in alphabetical order. That distinction used to be held by Don Zimmer. He attained it in the first game the Mets ever played (April 11, 1962), and has held it for the last 63 years, until now.
Anyone care to guess which Met appears first in alphabetical order. Pretty obscure, but gettable. Hints available on request.
Looked him up on Wikipedia:Carl Furillo story.
He was battling for a job on one of the Dodgers' farm teams right after WWII.
The guy he beat out quit the game, going to work for Otis Elevator in Harrison with my father.
After Carl's career ended,he wound up working for Otis as well in building the WTC.
What comes around goes around. And vice versa.
These tales of old have made the Mets' current tales of woe a little more bearable. That's a fantastic story.Odd:Both teams' last alphabetical player is named Zuber.
The Phillies had a hitter named Jon Zuber whom I saw at Yankee Stadium in 1998.
He hit a two out in the ninth inning ,two run homer off of tonight's man in the booth,David Cone, spoiling his shutout.
