I was at the Ledge in 1971 for his concert. Cost me $1 for the ticket.

That was December 14, 1971 and was advertised as a free concert by the Bruce Springsteen Band. Somebody owes you a dollar!

I was 26 years old.....had just gotten my BA at Cornell and ha no idea I would ever go to Rutgers for grad school........I was only vaguely sure where RU was in NJ...

I have the poster advertising the show framed at home.

Wasn't that a triple bill with a band called Southern Cross and some other group? If I'm not going senile, I thought Bruce played there again that school year, maybe in 1972, but when he came walking up from downstairs he was carrying an acoustic guitar and he had cut off his long hair. It was such a huge contrast both appearance wise and musically from the first show. I think Greetings had just been released or would be soon. But I remember the music was just so different from anything I had ever heard him play before. And it was a shock to see him with short hair.

jmg75, you must have seen Steel Mill perform live. I wish I had. Much too young for that, but I have seen Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez perform the songs with his Steel Mill Retro band.

I loved the music of Steel Mill. Have most of the bootlegs. People who don't know that time period will NEVER know how well Springsteen can actually play guitar if he wants to...

I was there, front row balcony, center stage. Had a physics exam I was supposed to be studying for, but it was a no-brainer to blow that off, lol.

I was a freshman, living in Tinsley (Metlar sucks), and got high in my room with a pre-concert crowd of about 20 people. I predicted Bruce would play "Night" to open the concert, and though everybody said I was nuts, it turned out I was right.

Best concert I ever saw. Bruce played for almost 3 hours and his stage took up half the space of the gym floor, so as he ran around everyone felt like they had a frontrow seat. I think the Barn only held something like 2200 that night, so it had an intimate feel to it.

When it was over I simply walked across College Ave to my dorm. Took me 5 minutes. Crashed in my dorm room and fell asleep with a smile in my face, knowing how fortunate I was to have had that incredible RU college experience. The first of many...

I was there. My freshman year.

Have gone on to see Bruce about 100 more times after that memorable concert.

Best of Luck,
Groz

lighty,

I was just old enough to have caught the tail end of the Steel Mill days. I grew up at the shore (still there), played in a bunch of garage bands, and we all thought Bruce was a great guitar player. You're right, he could really play. The stuff he and Steven did in Steel Mill was amazing. I took an RU classmate to see them, a guy who was a very good guitar player himself, and he was amazed. He told me they reminded him of early Allman Brothers. Lots of double lead stuff. Anyway, I was used to that style, songs like Ressurection and Jesse James (probably have the names wrong). When I saw him at the Ledge with short hair carrying an acoustic guitar I was stunned. Took me a while to get used to Greetings. Didn't like it at first.

I envy you the bootlegs. I don't have anything left from those days. Great music.
