For those who occasionally take advantage of the Trenton post office on 130 staying open late on the tax filing deadline, I am hearing the last pickup is at 7 tonight. Another casualty of E-everything?

You did get 3 extra days.

This. The POs aren't open late tonight because April 15 was Friday. It's not even certain why they extended the deadline at all, since traditionally that's only done when the 15th falls on Saturday or Sunday.

Insane schedule last few months. I had them 99% done before a trip last week and just needed to double check a few numbers. Both printers were useless last night. I suspect its the same crowd who shops on Christmas Eve, not that there is anything wrong with that.

It's was Emancipation day:boom::americanflag::boom:, it usually falls on the 16th, but since it fell on a Sat it was celebrated on the 15th. Common, everyone knows this. What you didn't get off from work, like federal employees?[winking]

There was a great chart I saw over the weekend that showed that something like 60% of all returns are filed on April 15 (or whatever the due date is) and another 10-15% are filed on October 15.

Not that this has anything to do with this thread, but......

I saw a stat that 70%+ of people filing tax returns don't itemize. It's basically their W-2 and any other forms are also filed with the IRS and/or state automatically. Why do these people even need to file? It should all be automated by now and would cut a lot of fat out of the IRS. You could argue that everyone should be in control of their own personal finances and I wouldn't disagree with that, but I'd think there's a huge opportunity to automate this process more. Just one click to acknowledge your return and people would be done.

I haven't mailed in a return in years. Does your return require forms that need to be physically submitted?

I've seen proposals to address this. The idea would be that the IRS would put together W-2s, etc. and send people a draft tax return. In various iterations, the IRS would treat the return as final if you don't do anything or you could send it back or click a link (if you got it electronically) if you agreed with it, and otherwise would have to file your return if you didn't. There are data security issues in making it work and avoiding identity theft problems, but I think it's a great idea and would be more efficient all the way around.

That said, I'm not sure whether it would result in cutting down the size of the IRS (or that it should). The most likely scenario is that the IRS would refocus people on enforcement and audits, which is where the money is and where the IRS has been saying for years it needs more resources.

I think this was the first year in a while I could use the federal e-file. Previously a certain number of listings on my wife's w-2 forced paper filing. Other then that, I can e-file, but clicking a button to efile my state return does not bring me enough joy to pay an additional $20 plus convenience fees. A small forest could be spared if they accepted pdf output from the tax software of ones chosing.

We both FAIL. [banana]

But not this dancing banana!

We got screwed this year. Someone apparently stole my wife's social security number and filed a fake return. The result was the system didn't let us e-file. We were blocked.

Nice of them to force everyone to e-file and then force us to mail a return after paying to e-file. Even the state return got rejected because the federal was blocked. FML
