Little guy was wildly talented.
RIP. Another irreplaceable, unique musician gone at such a young age. Or, are we just getting older as well. Kinda spooks me out. I know 2 guys who passed away suddenly at age 43, and 57 in the past 2 months.
No doubt about that. A prodigy. I'm mostly a fan of Prince circa 1979 - 1994. Lots of really good memories of some really cool people, places and events come to mind when I listen to just about anything he created during that period. Another one who's gone way too soon.
Controversy... Do Me Baby... Purple Rain... Computer Blue... Darling Nikki... I Would Die For You... Raspberry Beret... When Doves Cry... The Ballad of Dorothy Parker... Strange Relationship... Adore... Condition of the Heart... I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man... Paisley Park... Sign O' The Times... Strollin'... Money Don't Matter 2Nite...
Just some of my faves.
Hey Charlie Murphy, would you like some pancakes?
Agreed, loved those especially Adore, the Ballad of Dorothy Parker (thought I was the only one on that particular song), I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man.
and I would raise you with, Alphabet Street, Housequake, Do U Lie?, and Mountains!!!
This is strange/prophetic?
"full name Prince Rogers Nelson -- had a medical emergency on April 15th that forced his private jet to make an emergency landing in Illinois. But he appeared at a concert the next day to assure his fans he was okay. His people told TMZ he was battling the flu. At the show, Prince prophetically told the crowd, "Wait a few days before you waste any prayers."

It's getting older I think. A lot of my friends stop looking for new stuff until it hits them in the face. Being pretty close to the music scene, I see a lot of new stuff. As amazing as the stuff and people are who have come before, rest assured, there is just as amazing talent out there that will come to the forefront.

i disagree with this..name these artists who will be classic. Bottom line is the computer age killed the radio star and music biz. Internet and phones led us to a place where the true classic artists are not being cultivated. Sure there may be some quality bands out there you can find but classic, I dare you to name some
There are guaranteed to be "classic musicians" today..it's just a matter of what classic means to everyone.
Hall of Fame musicians to me, whether I personally liked them or not, are "classic". Until theres no more R and R HOF, there will always be classic musicians.
Just think as we age, our tastes become different.
again who are they...because where are the middle aged acts from the 90s who you would peg as being the hall of famers....I suppose you can say Beyonce and Jay Z will be in the hall of fame but they are no Madonna and Prince

Dorothy was a waitress... on the promenade.
She worked the night shift...
How 'bout Starfish and Coffee?
"...Me and Lucy both looked in when Cynthia wasn't around.
Lucy cried, almost died. You know what we found..."
Beyonce, Jay z. I'm sure Justin Timberlake will be.
Wouldnt be surprised if mumford and sons are, arcade fire, white stripes etc. are inducted. Adele? Lourdes? Taylor Swift? Can't predict the future, but all very, very successful in their own ways.
Again, doesn't mean I'm a fan.. (barely ever listen to the radio anymore .I like more classic rock). Just means music is evolving

Define Classic. Who you think is classic or who has reached as wide of an audience, as say Prince? You are starting to sound like an old guy.
Mumford and Sons? Lourde? 5 years of relevancy..you have a low bar
Again who are they
I agree with you that many people stop listening to new music, for the most part, when they get older. And I agree with you that there are tons of amazing and talented artists out there today. I don't agree that they will come to the forefront though.
As much as I'd like to believe I was wrong, times have clearly changed. People are largely left to "discover" bands on their own or via their friends. For some, it may seem like artists are very popular but these methods don't usually lead to national fame -- at least not in the rock and roll world.
We don't have MTV as the nation's radio station anymore. We hardly have unique radio stations anymore as a few corporations own 80% (or more) of the stations and keep a similar playlist for all to use. Even the individual local stations that are great are now up against satellite, streaming services, and youtube for attention.
Pop stars make break out. Rock stars are unlikely to do so imo.
Just think as we age, our tastes become different.
I've heard and generally agree with the fact that for most people, the music they truly love was what they were exposed to from the ages of 13-25. Each generation will naturally associate with different music.
I like a lot of music that is coming out now but does it elicit that same feeling as when I hear a song from HS or college. No way.

Mountains was a great underrated song from that awful movie
Prince had so many classics. I would say that When Doves Cry was his absolute masterpiece and that is not disrespecting Purple Rain, Little Red Corvette, 1999. I really think he blew Michael Jackson away in terms of talent and depth
my faves in no order...When Doves Cry, Take Me With U, Darling Nikki, I Wanna Be Your Lover (was this from this late 70s), Take Me With U, Mountains, Alphabet Street, Get Off, I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man, Raspberry Beret, Delirious, Pop Life, Lets Go Crazy, U Got the Look with Sheena Easton
RIP Purple Man

The 2010s is/are a pop decade, the pop artists have the exposure and the platform now. There is great new rock out there, but you really have to go looking for it, and the rock that shares that platform with pop today is the stuff we grew up with, crowding out the new rock. I find that Spotify playlists, YouTube, Amazon, Shazaming songs in TV and movie soundtracks and listening to internet radio stations exposes good stuff I would never hear otherwise. Makes me wonder how I found the music I found in the 80s and 90s.
Just a few days ago I ran across this video (watch from the 3:00 mark) and was once again amazed by his talent
It almost hurts to watch this video....seeing a boy who looks like George (his son)....and hearing Prince just tear the f'ing house down with his playing / heart.
Christ, he was talented!
RIP!
