Hello,

My son is currently a sophomore at DIII Rhodes College and was on the football team for both his Freshman and Sophomore years. His Senior year in HS and again last season he tore the labrum in his shoulders, first the right, then the left. It was in his best interest to retire from playing if he wants to "throw the ball with his kids" and so he did.

Yesterday, his head coach hired him as "Assistant Director of Football Operations". His tasks are generally those a DIII coaches have to do in addition to coaching including but not limited to teaching others how to film practices and games, coordinating recruit activities, watching film and winnowing down the recruit pool, etc. Furthermore, as the coaches know he wants to be a college HC, he will be doing some coaching during practices, albeit mostly watching and learning, and charting plays during games.

Although the position is unpaid, it is to his benefit. It will be an internship which is required at Rhodes and in his Senior year, he will write a paper on his experiences.

His coaches did not have to do this for him, but he proved his knowledge and earned their trust over the last two years.

Oh, and this is in addition to being a Math and Computer Science major.

OK. Bragging over.

You DO have a lot to be proud of in your young man. Best wishes for hm and you. Brag away,Dad.

Lots to be proud of with your son. SImilar thing happened to my youngest daughter, who tore her ACL in the final preseason soccer scrimmage a while back--the day before her senior year started. She went to almost every practice and game, save for the day of her surgery and the first postop day, helping the coach out with the team and underclassmen. She wound up with an athletic department award, a booster club scholarship and now she's coaching the middle school soccer team where she teaches. It fill your heart with pride when our kids show that kind of work ethic and determination to overcome things such as these.

Congratulations!

That's an awesome story. Congrats on having a kid who is smart, athletic and a team player.

Way to use your college experience to your benefit, kid. Someone like that knows how to seize opportunity and should be successful.

Congratulations! I spent 2 years at Rhodes playing center, and deep snapper on punts. Great experiences and many life lessons.

Is Mike Clary the AD still at Rhodes?

No. AD has been a bit of a revolving door job of late. Matt Dean, who has been at Rhodes for years, is now the AD.

Congrats to the Assistant Director of Football Operations.
Might be unpaid, but a great experience for him and a good start on the road to being a HC.
