OT (SIAP) - NJ Devils Name Change

April fools?
Yes. It's all over the news. Great job by their PR Department IMO. Guaran-damn-tee that they will sell the shirts. And I wouldn't be surprised if they register them as alternate unis and wear them occasionally.

I used to love April Fools but stuff like this is so easy to spot as fake. A good April Fools joke will catch everyone by surprise...this was not one of them. And I've been a NJ Devils fan from the very first day they left Colorado.

But that's the beauty of this one, it's not completely fake. They will sell the shirts, count on it.
It was completely fake. I'm not dumb enough to by a shirt to support an uncreative April Fools joke.
Quickly off the top of my head they could have worked with Toronto to announce that Lou Lamoriello was returning as an advisor. If both teams are in on it would have been believable. Especially after the reception he received during Marty's big day.
Than sell shirts that say Lou is Back. With a picture of Lou from behind.

Some "speculation" is the New Jersey Angels will be real...an expansion USWHL team next year...

Great job though by the team...lots of people are talking about it..

The mascot (N.J. Devil) is also involved, and has been tweeting some good stuff.

I actually heard the same thing about the minor league affiliate

I have to admit I was almost fell for that story but as you got into it you realized they were pulling your leg but was awesome because it was SI, the king of sports reporting in the day
I remember reading that story at the time and thinking, "This can't be true. But it's in Sports Illustrated so it must be true." As a Mets fan, I was heartbroken when my buddy pointed out the first letters of the subheading revealing the hoax.

To this day it is the greatest media April Fools Day hoax. The stuff today, yawn.

And the hoax was in the issue dated April 1, 1985, but it hit mailboxes and newsstands about a week earlier so folks weren't on guard for a prank when they read the article.

SI had weekly date of Thursday. It was supposed to be in your mailbox on that day and hit the new stands the same day. The local media would get their issue on Tuesday afternoon but all the NYC media was in on it. That was the genius of it.

They could have done that but "Lou is Back" is not really that funny.
The NJ Angels was funny, even if you were not fooled.

NWHL, not USWHL. I think it seems gimmicky that their teams all have the same color schemes or some sort of theme tie-in with the NHL franchise in those places.

The point of an April Fools joke is to actually fool everyone. It supposed to have that "gotcha!" The creativity of an April Fools joke should be more than just a tweet.
And do you really think NJ Angels is funny??

The NJ Angels was funny because it was absurd. I particularly liked the idea that the name change made the team more fan friendly - a bit of a poke at political correctness. Its a similar joke to the Rutgers Dining Service saying they are eliminating plates.

The "Lou is back" would probably be considered tampering so the Devils would never do it. Its the type of joke that would get the hard core fan all excited and then crushed when they realize they have been had. Appropriate for April Fool's day but not because its great humor.

It should have only fooled young kids or senile old folks.

But, their intention was to get people talking about the team so they succeeded.

As I said above that Toronto would have to be in on it so it wouldn't be tampering. And my point is doing something creative as opposed to a one liner on Twitter. People have a whole year to think of a great April's Fools prank they don't use that time well at all.

So WhiteBus, it sounds like you are saying that a good April Fools joke must meet two criteria - humor and credibility.

Humor is purely subjective. You and I can disagree on what is funny.

Credibility is more objective. I believe the NJ Angels worked not because it is absurd, but because it is at least somewhat believable! There is precedent for a major sports franchise to attempt to broaden its appeal by removing demonic references from its branding. See Devil Rays, Tampa Bay.

The NJ Angels joke is certainly more credible than the Mets finding a maharishi with a 150+ mph fastball.

I'd much rather play against Angels than Devils....foolish PR move IMO..
I wouldn't....
