OT: Singapore

Nice people - lots of clean freaks.
If you skip a shower or haven't gargled don't tell anyone (and some might ask)

Singapore is a great city for walking. It's very safe with possibly the lowest crime rate of any country. As several comments above suggest, they enforce the laws rather vigorously.

The Botanical Gardens in the Domes are beautiful. The SuperTree Grove is magical for walking around at night. I highly recommend going up to the top of the Marina Bay Sands Hotel to see the skyline lit up at night (reservations recommended). The Museum of Asian Civilization is excellent. The temples in Little India are very colorful so if you've never been to South India, I recommend visiting at least one of those. Chinatown is also good for walking and both Chinatown and Little India have many reasonably priced places to eat.

The metro system in Singapore is very good with a high degree of interconnectivity so you find your way around easily. We always took the metro to whichever area we wanted to visit and then walked around.

Changi is the world's most beautiful airport and is an attraction in itself.

Be ready for sticker shock.

Here for the first time. Any suggestions for must things to do or see?
I’ll see you there in about 11 hours. On route now for work.

Definitely check out Marina Bay Sands, the Gardens, Sentosa, Buddha Tooth Relic Temple (which has some cool restaurants and stuff nearby), Clarke Quay area…get a Singapore Sling and also Peking Duck is incredible, noodles, etc. Have fun!

@colbert17

You have to try the pepper crabs. It became my new favorite dish. I’ve spent some time in Singapore and had a few employees on my team based there… they would take me on food tours (definitely a world class cuisine destination).

I recommend visiting local (not touristy) hawker markets and sample different dishes (small specialized food kiosks all under one roof). Locals eat most meals since their apartments don’t have much of a kitchen.

I regret never visiting during Formula 1 race week.

PS - don’t take durian fruit on public transportation (in fact avoid it completely 🤢), for a place that outlaws chewing gum there are plenty of gum stained sidewalks near where the local working class congregates, go to raffles hotel bar and have a Singapore sling…

PSS - several years ago you gave me some local tips when I visited Vietnam (Ho Chi Min City). That was after a Singapore trip. You gave good advice. Thanks again.

I was there is September. No other recommendations than already discussed. How is the weather in April? It was humid in September.

Rooftop bar at the Sands is cool. The zoo is great. Orchard Tower for hookers. Just don't go to the 4th floor.

Been there (Singapore, not Orchard Twrs.) a dozen times. Sentosa is cool too. Some good beach bars. I prefer chili crab to pepper crab. Best places are in Boat Quay. Clark Quay is also a good spot. Also, The Long Bar at Raffles is a touristy cool place for the famous Singapore Sling.

Went to Raffles yesterday and I'm staying in Clark Quay. Lot's of places to hang out.

Just went through 13 straight days of 100+ degrees in BKK. Last Thursday the heat index was 109. Sweat was just pouring off my face.

Just saw your message. I have an early flight to Ho Chi Minh in the morning. I’m at Clark's Quay at a place called Wings on the river near the Read Bridge.
I can stick around for another hour or so if want to stop by

Night safari at the zoo with a tiger beer is worthwhile. Most animals are nocturnal and active in the evening.

Very easy city for an American to navigate

following, going there later this year!

I heard the street food markets are amazing
They call them hawker markets and most locals use them more then they prepare meals at home. The variety of foods is crazy. Enjoy, Singapore (temp and humidity aside) is an underrated destination … plenty to do and see and is truly a world class destination for cuisine.

Getting ready to leave and heading to Ho Chi Minh for a few days to see some old friends.
I absolutely loved my stay in Singapore and would recommend it to anyone to visit.
Once again thanks to all of you for your recommendations . They were very helpful.

I thought at first this thread was gonna be about that great Tom Waits tune from the album Rain Dogs....Singapore.

So is the airline
I flew JFK to Singapore on SA business class (upstairs on an A380). The entire upper deck was only 74 pods (4 across … window, aisle, aisle, window). That space configured as economy would hold close to 300 seats. Largest airline bed I have ever slept in, concierge escort to boarding, etc. Singapore Air is at the top for service.

At the time that was the world’s longest scheduled commercial flight.

PS - the first class “apartments” under the cockpit were going for north of $20k for a ticket …oil money???) 😉

Was only there for a layover on way back from Viet Nam. Took a page from Anthony Bourdain, hopped in a cab and asked the driver to take us wherever he ate dinner that night. He took us to what was basically an outdoor food court. The variety of food was spectular: chilli crab, laksa, Char kuay teow and plenty of beer options to wash everything down. One of the best meals of my life. The other best meals were in Viet Nam. Wish I knew where it was, but they're everywhere just pick one.

Other than short flights many times my only long one in business was Singapore to Sydney. It was amazing. Even on a short flight in coach (1 hour) I recall everyone getting a hot meal (good) and drinks!

The best economy flying experience I have ever had. We flew out of Newark. On our flight the seats in economy were 2 x 2 x 2. So roomy! There was an area you could go grab snacks whenever you wanted (cup o'noodles, etc). 19 hours was grueling but that's the airline to do it on. Unfortunately, I don't think they have economy class anymore for us peasants.

My son is going to honeymoon in the Maldives this summer. I talked him into a layover in Singapore and to fly Singapore Air. They will thank me when they return.
