OT: Super Bowl LIX - Game Thread

You didn’t watch the game and don’t go to stadiums.
Sweet Caroline at any RU venue filled to capacity would be more receptive.
I’m in no way advocating for Neil Diamond to perform so don’t go that route.
Was it an RU venue? Or a college football venue in general? Oh it wasn't?

Go back and watch the performance, get to the part where they phase out and the entire stadium is screaming at the top of their lungs "It's prolly A Minoooooooooooor"

It was the #1 song in the world last year man, performed by a 22 time grammy winner.

I say this tongue in cheek with all due respect, your OLD man! You don't grap what appeals to younger fans. Older fans are already going to watch the super bowl see my above response about how the NFL know this after the older generation were all threatening to abandon watching football after the whole flag kneeling thing and which lasted all of about ONE WEEK. They know they have you and your adience, so they are going out and finding new current artists who get an audience excited to tune in that otherwise could care less about football. Do you get it now? It's ALL ABOUT RATINGS for the 25-49 Demographic. Love in my heart, advertisers DON'T CARE about people over 60.

Thread took a weird turn. Someone should clean it up.

Speaking about .. what does Kendrick say? A MINOR!!

SMH🤦🏻‍♀️

Zap you have the boards respect for sure but the Super Bowl halftime show is not for those who already watch it’s a bridge to new audiences. Just look at this board how many said they watch the game but not pregame or halftime regardless of who is playing? The demographic of this board is already an NFL audience but you know who ain’t yet? My 10-14 year old girls who came for halftime and joined my 17 year old and all sang to the Lamar halftime show. The 10-14 year old girls then proceeded to hang around and watch some of the third quarter.
Agree with this. There are those that want to watch the game and hate the rest. There are some there for commercials and others who only care about a particular halftime performer. Pretty tried and true formula.

So,
Just curious what you think of your 10 and 14 year old daughters listening and I assume dancing to the un-cut lyrics of Kendrick?
Tell em' be Humble,
Sit down be Humble,
I'm so so sick and tired of the photoshop,
Show me something Natural like Afro on Richard Prior,
Show me something natural

It's a message I am all in favor of my children listening and dancing to and one of the songs performed by Kendrick Sunday night

The "Think of the children" Tipper Gore outrage is so 1995... Get with the times man

And we are all see the results, when family and education isn’t the most important message of all.
If you think it’s pretty God Bless You.

Can you show me which lyrics above you would have a problem with your 10 or 14 year old listening to?

Can you tell me what results from the Tipper Gore outrage you are referencing?

The fact that women and minorities have far more opportunities today then then? The fact that we as humans have advanced ourselves to capabilities in that time that people could only dream of? The fact that the life expectancy in the US has risen by 5 years in that time? The fact that not every movie and TV show is a bunch of white actors with no diversity?

What exactly was better in the 90’s from a societal standpoint that Rap Music destroyed more than groups like Limp Biscuit?

I’m all ears man, please use specifics

I lived through multitudes of black shows in 70s, 80’s and 90s both comedy and drama.
Yes, as i said, I grew up in the South End of Montclair with black owned liquor stores, black owned butcher shop, black owned hardware store, black owned shoe and sneaker store, black owned landscaping businesses, black owned moving and construction companies.
None of em are around anymore…what happened?
East Orange Main St was a thriving black town with thriving black owned businesses and stores?????

Hell, they even got a black actor into Hogan's Hero's in the 60s who wasn't a Tuskegee Airman. The original Mission Impossible in also in the 60's. "A bunch of white actors with no diversity" was on it's way out 60 years ago.

That's all wonderful, you didn't answer the question though.

What exactly was better in the 90's from a societal standpoint that Rap Music destroyed?

Please use specifics.

Could it maybe be that you've just reached the age that you no longer recognize what's "Cool and current"?

Insane in the Membrane.... come on man, that was a throwback song in 2003! Today kids would hear it and say "WTF is this?"

Like Jump around is trash also I’m sure…only it’s still an anthem at many major colleges.

On a personal level it pisses me off those black owned businesses are now in the hands of Indians and Middle Easterners.
That includes old family owned gas stations with mechanics and devoted customers.
Perhaps i shouldn’t be, but I miss the old neighborhood and going to public school with their sons and daughter's.

Yes, kids would hear ‘Jump around’ and think to themselves ‘WTF is this?’ You are officially “Out of touch” old man!😉. Both of those tracks are 30+ years old, kids DO NOT CARE anymore. They may get played at stadiums, never at parties. Bro we didn’t even listen to that 15 years ago when I was partying as a student at Rutgers, it was old news then.

You gotta understand dude, kids think that PitBull is an old artist. You turn on House of Pain and they’re looking at each other like ‘why are we listening to ancient history?’

Why would it upset you that a minority owned business is still a minority owned business? I assure you we as black people don’t need your sympathy. Those Indian children deserve to go to school just like the black ones you grew up with

I protect my kids as best I can from what I can. To me it’s about overall life decision making and so far that has been pretty good. Hearing curse or slang while not ideal is lower in my impact list.

Because they aren’t part of the community, they don’t live there, they aren’t friends we invite to barbecues, their sons and daughters don’t go to the local high school and play on the football team or become cheerleaders.
They is no more Montclair South End, where we played football, stickball, basketball and baseball from morning till the street lights come on.
The black dads ran Nishuane Park in the summer, Althea Gibson, Larry Doby and my dad were like hero’s to us kids, all of them were a part of the community…David Tyree grew up there.
It’s gone bro, the dynamic is gone.

I agree I’m old, and you’ll never understand, you can’t miss what you never had

How do you know? I’m serious how do you know they don’t live there and aren’t a part of the community?

I work in real estate, specifically new home construction on the sales side primarily in the DMV. Lots of Indian and middle eastern families have moved here yes, they live and work locally, are involved in their communities, kids are friends with other kids in the neighborhoods. What does one being middle eastern or Indian as opposed to black have anything to do with one another?

I can PROMISE YOU, we as black people are in a far better place today than we were in the 70’s and 80’s as you reference.

I really don’t understand why one minority would upset you more than another, aside from it being something you aren’t used to… in that case, adapt

Respectfully, you are a FOOL when it comes to music. To suggest Rap isn’t deep or sophisticated is truly one of the most ignorant things you could possibly say. To suggest the audience isn’t sophisticated shows a level of stupidity that I truly did not know was possible on a board full of stupid takes. To suggest the style of music is "primative" has undertones that show exactly who you are as a person bud. We see you

The fact that you think Takeshi69 is reese's to Kendrick Hershey is remarkable. I couldn't have asked you to say a more ignorant thing to highlight just how stupid you are on the subject if I tried. You just made the equivalent of comparing Tom Waits to Freddy Mercury in terms of singing ability. WOW! Thank you for that. Truly I could not have replied in any way to make you look dumber than your own words right there. Truly incredible, THANK YOU for the GIFT!

You haven’t addressed the fact that of the top 10 grossing tours from last year are all acts that have been around for 20+ years (you wouldn’t mention 2023 of course as there were multiple rappers and hip hop artists tours in the top 10 that year). What modern music is appealing to the masses the way rap music does today?

The fact that while making your arguments for music you brought up anything to do with Robert Smith is comedy GOLD! You said the Cure! Holy Christ you uncultured Neanderthal of musical horseh*t!🤣

As I’ve said many times, you don’t have to like rap, but I don’t understand why you feel the need to disrespect it.

Do me a favor and look up the words to ‘Dear Mama’ by Tupac and ‘Lose Yourself’ by Eminem while telling me rap doesn't have depth. Then follow up by trying to tell me about Ed Sheeran, the 1975 and Robert Smith🤣🤣🤣

I don't like Tom Waits or Queen - but they have musical skills.
Keith Richard said rap is just a guy reciting Mary had a little lamb to a dull drum track.

I didn't say I liked 6ix9ine's music - just his interviews.
He used to be a depressed busboy until he wanted money and saw rap a way to do it.
He sort of parody's of rapper - rapping about guns, big butts and petting puppies.
He's clowning people in a way

Taylor Swift is 34-5 and not a Boomer.
The reason the money making gig are mostly older musicians is because they actually have skills, and the people behind them fell off the path with their "beats."
Knocking older bands with skills and staying power still playing around the world while pumping-up rap as something elite is pretty weak. Olivia Rodrigo has more musical skills than any rapper and she's half deaf.

I don't care about rap in itself but it actually gets people killed on one hand, and it makes them glorify crime and personal destruction on the other. Its like a magic potion to reverse evolution in people - its just tribal chanting to drums tbh.

Because I went to high school there, I live in the same neighborhood and my daughter is a senior at MHS now.
Why would one minority upset me more than another…because I grew up with the brothers, we formed a friggen football/sports dynasty and dynamic that couldn’t be matched… we all still hang out and everyone is in agreement.

You should go out and meet your neighbors, you’ll likely find many of them are Indian and wonderful people.

Neighborhoods and areas change man, but please, don’t feel bad for us as black people because another minority now owns a once black owned business. People are people and are just trying to make their way in this world. Part of what holds all of us back is when others cast judgement
